Super Bowl Snack Reviews
By Mike Pomranz
Since the mid-80s when Frito-Lay stopped selling original, plain Doritos in most local stores, commercial snacks seem to have gone all flavored and fancy. Whatever happened to good old chips and dip, and can any of these newfangled treats compete? Read on as we give you a run down to see if these post-modern munchies can hold up against an old standard -- a bag of Ruffles potato chips and jar of Lay's French Onion dip. Time for a snack attack!

    Tostitos Multigrain
One of the few "plain" products I got to sample, Tostitos Multigrain were quite enjoyable. Multigrain is typically intended to read as "healthy" more so than "tasty," but these chips had a lot of corn chip flavor with a touch of sweetness. And healthiness aside, I'm always happy when I recognize every item in the ingredients list -- especially in a mass-market product). Tostitos Multigrain chips are a solid contender to the Ruffles throne.

    Doritos Spicy Sweet Chili
What was Doritos thinking? Not that this latest incarnation is terrible, just bizarre, with an Asian food flavored, almost teriyaki edge. When it comes to Doritos, I tend to be a purist; Nacho Cheese is pretty much where I draw the line -- sorry Cooler Ranch. While this Spicy Sweet style might satiate some buds looking for a unique taste, I'd probably spend more time at the French Onion dip bowl.

Rold Gold Pretzel Waves Parmesan Garlic
Speaking of far-out tastes, Rold Gold swings and misses with their Parmesan Garlic Pretzel Waves. Even forgoing determining what a "pretzel wave" is exactly, I can tell you precisely what taste these Frankenstein snacks leave in your mouth: Clam sauce! I'm all for dipping bread in my leftover mussel juice, but this snack just doesn't capture the essence. If I want waves, I'll stick with the Ruffles.

    Rachel Been

    Sun Chips Peppercorn Ranch
As far as wavy snack chips go, Sun Chips are definitely a step up from the aforementioned "pretzel waves." I'm a big fan of Sun Chips in general. They're light and reasonably healthy aso far as chips go. Still, this Peppercorn Ranch variety leaves something to be desired. The ranch flavor is pretty prominent, weighing down the Sun Chip's natural levity. Personally, I'd prefer plunking some plain Sun Chips in my ol' fashioned French Onion dip jar.

Cracker Crisps Zesty Herb & Parmesan
Another product to file in the "I'm-not-sure-what-this-is" department, I was skeptical of so-called "cracker crisps." But these part potato, part wheat, bite-size hybrids won me over with their superior light crunch and their simple subtle herb flavor. Dipping chips requires expending energy and snacking is a lazy man's game. Cracker Crisps are pure toss-'em-in-your-mouth simplicity. Go ahead and plop this bag next to me on the couch.

Stacey's Parmesan Garlic & Herb Pita Chips
Good things come in small packages, which might explain why pita chips, with their propensity towards smaller bag sizes, rule! Parmesan, garlic and herb are all regularly revisited flavors on this list, but Stacey's is one of the few to truly get it right. They're straightforward and simple, letting the chip do most of the talking. You might feel a little non-macho chowing down on pita chips during the big game, but with their killer crunch and perfectly tasty baked flavor, Parmesan Garlic & Herb Pita Chips are a worthy change of pace from those pedestrian potato chips.

Archer Farms Sea Salt Baked Pita Chips
Stacey's set the bar pretty high, but I'm also a sucker for traditional tastes, so could the standard Sea Salt Pita Chips top their flavored cousins? Oddly enough, where Stacey's showed some restraint, Archer Farms really rocked out with the sea salt making their chips taste a bit like you're slurping up brine. The chips themselves were worthy competitors, but let's go lighter on the sodium next time. Maybe try dipping these guys in your French Onion to help take the edge off.

Goldfish Flavor Blasted Monstrous Mozzarella Stick Baked Snack Crackers
Goldfish Crackers have been a favorite of mine since childhood, but this Monstrous Mozzarella Stick incarnation is more like a monstrosity. Two possibilities exist here: Either Pepperidge Farm thinks mozzarella sticks taste like stale Cheese Goldfish or my test bag was compromised. I'd like to give the guys down at PF the benefit of the doubt on this one, but the "sell by" date says otherwise. Buyer beware: Once again, stick with the old school styles!

Market Pantry Bite-Size Rice Snacks Ranch
After spending my day sampling snack foods, rice crackers are actually a wonderful respite. Ranch isn't my favorite fake flavor and shoving my nose in the bag made me nauseous. Luckily, your average snack eater won't be eating these face-first, so I can give these mini Market Pantry rice cakes a big thumbs up as a healthy, crunchy alternative snack.

Super Bowl Snacks: Spinach Dip

Still don't know what to take to that Super Bowl potluck party? You don't need to impress anyone with your mad culinary skillz at a football party, so save the foie gras terrine recipe for another day, and just bring spinach dip.

Spinach Dip

1 cup of mayonnaise
1 package Knorr Vegetable Soup Mix (a.k.a. "Recipe Mix")
1 pkg. frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
2 green onions (scallions), thinly sliced
1 pint of sour cream

Combine all ingredients. Cover and chill two hours or over night. Serve with crudités or bread chunks.

Super Bowl snacks for fancy foodies: Anchoiade Chez Gilbert

Anchovies: you love 'em or you hate 'em, right? I love them, especially when they are the fat, olive oil-packed ones from Italy or Spain. If you love anchovies and want a deliciously different appetizer to serve at your Super Bowl party this weekend, try this twist on the "crostini/brushchetta" theme. It's easy, too:

Anchoiade Chez Gilbert

  • 2 cans (each 2 ounces; 57 grams) flat anchovy fillets in oil, drained, oil reserved
  • 16 thin slices from a long, narrow sweet) French baguette
  • 2½ tsps. red wine vinegar
  • 4 garlic cloves, coursely chopped
  • 3 tbsps chopped parsley

Super Bowl Snacks: Guacamole rules

Avocados are da bomb. I love them. I grew up in Hawaii where they were abundant. I have childhood memories of halving them and eating them sprinkled with sugar (don't knock it till you try it), drizzled with balsamic vinegar, or mashed onto buttered toast.

When I was pregnant, I ate an avocado almost every day during my second trimester when the cravings hit hard. But the way I like avocado the best, is in guacamole. It is my favorite party "dip" by far.  My guacamole is more like a chunky, chopped salad, and is delicious served with warm tortilla chips or atop chili.

Super Bowl Snacks: "Walking Taco"

No Super Bowl party is complete without the requisite 7-layer Mexican dip. My recipe was handed down to me by an older family friend with the notes "Men love this!" scrawled across it...so hands off, ladies! It serves a large group so you can divide this between two plates. And, please, serve only with Fritos Scoops.  Remember, I take my football food seriously, and just like how you can only serve clam dip with Ruffles, there is just no substitute for Fritos in this recipe.

Walking Taco

Note: There is some debate over the origin of the name (thanks, commenters!). Walking Taco is the name of the recipe given to me.

2 cans of refried beans combined with 1 packet of taco seasoning mix
1 tub of guacamole (e.g. the kind where you mix the salsa in, or make your own)
1 pint of sour cream
2 4 oz. cans diced green chiles (or use one can of jalapeños and one can of green chiles if you want it spicy)
2 4 oz. can of sliced black olives (or a combination of green and black olives)
4 green onions thinly sliced
2 tomatoes, seeded and chopped
2/3 pounds of sharp cheddar grated

Divide bean mixture between two plates. Spread guacamole over both plates of beans. Layer remaining ingredients between the two plates. Top both with cheese. Serve cold or at room temp with Fritos Scoops.

Super Bowl Snacks: watch out for fart-inducers

pimiento cheese toastsWhat's the most important thing to remember about Super Bowl snacks? (And I know you just didn't answer "health," because no self-respecting football snacker counts calories during the Super Bowl!) Well, reducing the number of farts induced by your food, of course.

OK, maybe that's not on your mind, but Bill Downs (creator of the "world's first fart blog") says it should be. His advice is to avoid refined foods ("if it's white, it ain't right") and broccoli, eggs and beer (uh-oh). He advises that you start your day with an apple, some oatmeal, or whole grain bread. And drink water.

So what does make a good, low-fart, Super Bowl snack? He doesn't really say, so I'll take a couple of stabs. Maybe a nice layered dip with salsa fresca, avocadoes, and plain yogurt, served with flax-seed tortilla chips? Savory biscotti served with tapenade? Pimiento cheese toasts made with homemade mayo, green olives, and wholegrain country sourdough? Now I'm getting hungry...

Super Bowl Snacks: Easy Artichoke Dip

My beloved San Francisco Forty-Niners aren't playing in upcoming the Super Bowl (and they've sucked since the 90's) so really, I have no interest in it. But, boy do I love football food. In my opinion the snacks should be easy and adundant. Here's a  delicious dip that you can whack together in minutes. Make sure you get out and throw around the pigskin after eating this—it's rich.

Easy Artichoke Dip

You can make it fancier, but why?

1 12 oz. can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped (not the marinated kind)
1 cup mayonnaise
4-6 ounces of parmesan cheese (or a mixture of parmesan and romano)

Mix ingredients together. Bake a 350º for 35 minutes. Serve hot with crackers or toasted baguette slices.

Keep an eye out over the next two weeks for more party food ideas from me. I take my football munchies very seriously.

Tip of the Day

Drying fruit is easy, mostly hands-off and yields a sweet and healthy snack.
