Earlier this week, Advertising Age ran a story entitled "What Your Taste in Beer Says About You."

Citing researched compiled by Mindset Media -- a "market researcher specializing in psychographics" -- the article discusses how the beer a person drinks can be a strong indicator of his or her personality. For instance, Bud drinkers are "sensible, grounded and practical," Bud Light drinkers can have "frat boy-like personalities," and Michelob Ultra drinkers "think highly of themselves and can be a little bit conceited."

The concept is interesting, but why spend all that money on "research"? Most people could come up with those same assumptions on their own. In fact, the list can be extrapolated even further... massive research grant hopefully forthcoming.

• Pabst Blue Ribbon drinkers consider playing bass in a punk band "gainful employment" and have handlebar mustaches.
• Miller Lite drinkers consider the consumption of 20 beers "moderate drinking" and include beer bongs on their list of "proper glassware."
• Sam Adams drinkers love wearing the same Red Sox hat for their entire adult life and believe there's nothing wrong with hitting on someone else's girlfriend.
• Guinness drinkers think the best football team is Manchester United and consider a fist fight a "night out on the town."
• Busch drinkers think the best bar in America is their porch and consider a proper food and beer pairing to be "a pounder and a bag of Hardee's."

And snobby craft beers drinkers tend to be people like beer writers who think they have a right to make fun of others!

For my entire life, when it came to American breweries, three names came to mind: Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors. Well, in 2002, Miller was purchased by South African Breweries to form SABMiller. In 2005, Coors merged with Canada's Molson to form Molson Coors. And now, the multi-continent conglomerate InBev is buying Anheuser-Busch. It's enough to make your head-spin: You shouldn't need an M.B.A. to get tipsy.

The question becomes, with all of these international buyouts, what true blue American breweries are left?

A lot of companies have been quick to fly the American flag, but fittingly, the new #1 American owned brewery takes their brand name from an American patriot. Boston Beer Company, makers of Sam Adams, is now not only America's largest "craft brewer", it's also the country's largest domestically owned brewery. If that doesn't further blur the line between the modern craft brewery and their macro counterparts, I don't know what does.

So who are in line to be the new "Big 3"? Breaking it down strictly by 2007's beer sales volume here you go: 1) Boston Beer (makers of Sam Adams), 2) Yuengling, and 3) Sierra Nevada.

Now the recall mania has hit beer lovers.

Today we told you about Malt-o-Meal cereal being recalled, and now comes word that Sam Adams is recalling beer because some bottles might have glass fragments in them. Only 12 oz bottles of Sam Adams beer in brown bottles are being recalled. The bottles are from a third party that supplies bottles to Sam Adams, and the glass was discovered during routine inspection at its Cincinnati plant. The bad bottles have an "N35" and then an "OI" stamped near the bottom (see pic).

This is one of my nightmares about drinks and food that come in glass bottles, whether it's beer or pasta sauce or mustard or whatever. I'm really surprised that something like this doesn't happen more often.

I used to be one of those guys that didn't drink domestic beers. Well, in my teen years I drank pretty much whatever they were serving at the party (disclaimer: don't drink - and stay in school!), but in my 20s I tried to drink nothing but Red Stripe, Corona, maybe a Heineken here and there. But then something happened and I started drinking American beers more and more. Maybe it was because I tried a few beyond Bud and liked them or maybe they actually got better in the 90s, but now I drink Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada a lot, and some blonde ales. When I drink beer, that is, which isn't often (I'm more of a wine and cocktail guy now).

Today is American Beer Day, and how convenient that it falls on a Saturday! Raise a glass of domestic tonight, and make sure you don't drink and drive.
