If eggs Benedict is what you're after this Sunday morning, you may have to look no further than the nearest Ruby Tuesday.

Based in Maryville, Tenn., the restaurant chain is expanding testing of its brunch menu on Aug. 30 to hundreds of locations across the country in the wake of a successful run in some 50 Ruby Tuesday restaurants this summer, Nation's Restaurant News reports.

Locations offering brunch will open two hours early, at 9 a.m., and offer brunch until noon. The regular menu will be available starting at 11 a.m.

Craft beer for the big game at Ruby Tuesday

A glass of beer.Well, the bad news is that Ruby Tuesday is not a sports bar. You can't go there and expect to watch the big game. The good news is that they now carry a wide variety of craft beers.

Craft beers have risen in popularity exponentially over the last decade or so, and I don't think we're close to leveling off. Few, if any, national restaurant chains carry craft beers. Ruby Tuesday is among the first. The chain, which has over 900 locations, will now carry the likes of Sam Adams, Dogfish Head, Flying Dog, Abita, and Widmer Hefeweizen. They'll offer a draft of the day and draft flights, though that won't be available everywhere due to local liquor laws. Also, offerings will vary by location. Ruby Tuesday have even given the bartenders studying at their Center for Culinary Excellence a course with instructors from the Boston Beer Company on "how to store, pour, and otherwise care for these special beers".

So maybe you want to stay home to watch the super bowl. You can always go out after the game for a good burger and a great beer at Ruby Tuesday.

Do chain restaurants promote 'extreme eating'?

It has long been suggested that the oversized portions offered to diners at many restaurants are responsible for the expanding waistlines of Americans. Now, the health/lifestyle watchdog group Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is implying that "table-service chain restaurants," such as The Cheesecake Factory, T.G.I. Fridays and Ruby Tuesday, are cramming their dishes full of fattening, unhealthy ingredients on purpose, encouraging "extreme eating." Sometimes described as the "food police," CSPI cites the fact that these restaurants are not entirely forthcoming with the nutritional information on their foods, pointing out that Ruby Tuesday's Fresh Chicken & Broccoli Pasta entree has 2,060 calories and 128 grams of fat, while The Cheesecake Factory's Chris' Outrageous Chocolate Cake (layers of chocolate cake, brownies, coconut pecan filling and chocolate-chip coconut cheesecake) had 1,380 calories.

However misleading it may seem to call a dish "Fresh Chicken and Broccoli Pasta" and cram it with (mostly) cheese, it doesn't sound like there is any ill intent there, does it? The restaurants say that their menus change so frequently that it would be impractical to put together nutritional stats for individual dishes and change the menus all the time. They cite value-conscious consumers, who view large portion sizes as one of their highest priorities when eating out. Looking at both sides of this issue begs one question: which came first, huge portion sizes or the desire for them?

Saveur 100 released

saveur 100 logoSaveur magazine just released its "100 list" for 2006. 100 what? Since any explicit label would be too restricting, the annual list is simply described as Saveur's "favorite restaurants, food, drink, people, places and things", which certainly covers a lot of ground.

Making the eighth list this year are restaurants from India to Mexico City, as well as a variety of restaurants and chefs from Las Vegas, including Daniel Bouloud, Bouchon, Alex and Joel Robuchon. Favorite foods included Costco birthday cakes, Crispy Buffalo Wontons from Ruby Tuesdays (a US chain) and Rich Man's Purses at Gundel Restaurant, Budapest, in addition to duck eggs, spicy Thai kettle chips and Japanese freshwater crabs, while favorite drinks included California dessert wines, Hendrick's Gin from Scotland and cointreau.
