A flavor of salt for every hour of the day

artisanal salt sampler from Red EnvelopeI typically have at least four or five different types of salt in my kitchen. There's a container of kosher salt next to the stove as well as some big grained sea salt. I also have lavender salt, smoked salt and some pink Hawaiian salt. I seem to be something of a salt lightweight when you compare my collection to this Artisanal Salt Sampler. It come with 24 varieties of salt and can be ordered over at Red Envelope.

This would make a terrific gift for the salt-crazed foodie in your life. Although if they are someone who often cooks for you, be prepared for taste tests and side-by-side comparisons.

Wine Filled Truffles

If you attend enough holiday parties, you are eventually going to encounter those little chocolate bottles that are filled with a teaspoon or two of various liquors. The most popular bottles seem to be the ones filled with Grand Marnier, Kahlua, Southern Comfort or another fairly sweet spirit, but you'll find chocolates with everything from vodka to tequila, as well. Frankly, while they are fun and a little bit more "adult" than some of the usual holiday candies, they are not exactly the highest quality treats you'll eat this season. Perhaps a better alternative would be a box of wine filled truffles. They are more indulgent, richer and ultimately more satisfying than popping a quarter shot of tequila into your mouth. The truffles are enrobed in smooth dark chocolate and are filled with your choice of either cabernet, chardonnay, port or champagne. A dozen truffles come in each box and, at $25 per box, they would make a nice change of pace from the standard bottle of wine as a holiday hostess gift.

Flashlight grill tongs

As the season goes on, the days are getting longer and barbecues come out of storage in preparation for the grilling season. No matter how late it stays light, sometimes there just isn’t enough time to fix dinner before the sun goes down. This isn’t a problem when cooking indoors, but it can be a problem when you’re grilling. In the dark, it is hard to see what your meats and veggies look like. Timers and guess-work can help, but nothing is better than being able to take a good look at what you’re doing.

Enter the Flashlight Grill Tongs from Red Envelope. The tongs are stainless steel and have a battery powered LED flashlight built into them. With the press of a button, you can easily monitor your foods on the darkest night as they cook up on the grill.

Tip of the Day

Drying fruit is easy, mostly hands-off and yields a sweet and healthy snack.
