If You Like Them Maybe You Should Put a Ring on Them - The Measuring Spoon Quandary

measuring spoons
These measuring spoons from Beehive Kitchenware are undeniably lovely: their silvery sheen and restrained floral imprint make them the kind of kitchen utensil that belongs on a wall, not in a crowded drawer. And because they're pewter, they've got real heft: these are spoons whose style matches their substance.

But. There are those who would argue that the winsome charms of these spoons are rendered all but irrelevant by the thin copper ring that holds them all together. It's a small detail, yes, but to many measuring spoon users, a polarizing one.

Plenty would argue that the ring is an unnecessary annoyance that makes it all but impossible to keep all of the spoons clean, even when you're only using one. Other, pro-ring users would counter that a couple extra dirty spoons is a small price to pay for the convenience of knowing where all of your spoons are, all the time -- whether they're jammed in that overcrowded drawer or displayed on the wall as proudly as a Picasso. So vote, and hit the comments to defend your pick:

Measuring spoons that level themselves

self-leveling measuring spoonsWe all know that when it comes to baking, it's important to be exact in your measurements. There's a world of difference between a heaping teaspoon and a perfectly leveled one. Too much baking powder in your cookie batter will potentially result in bitter cookies and odd leavening. And while the old system of using a butter knife to level your measuring spoons does work, the lazy among us often skip this step, haphazardly leveling their spoons with a finger or a few well-placed taps.

However, salvation has arrived, in the form of Self-Leveling Measuring Spoons. These measures have a sliding lever that scrapes off the excess and ensures that you always have the exact amount of baking powder, soda or cinnamon. I have about ten sets of measuring spoons, so I'll probably skip this set for now. However, for the people who do a whole lot of precision baking, I can see how these would make a great addition to their array of tools.

What do you guys think? Ingenious or ridiculous?

Cool measuring spoons

measuring spoons

Might I have an obsession with measuring spoons? I have a very cute set of heart-shaped spoons that measure things out like "a spoonful of laughter." Now I think I might actually start collecting measuring spoons, the way some people collects balloon whisks or other kitchen utensils.

I love these measuring spoons made by Decor Craft Inc out of Providence, Rhode Island. At first glance, they look just like regular round measuring spoons, but if you look closely, the fractional measurements are actually cut out of the spoons.

I {Heart} heart-shaped measuring spoons

heart-shaped measuring spoonsI am not a girlie-girl in most respects, but for some reason I have always loved the color pink and anything that is shaped like a heart. Though I find Valetine's Day, the holiday, slightly annoying (for many reasons not associated with food, of course), I love that everything around me is suddenly heart-shaped.

I love my heart-shaped measuring spoons. On the front of them, instead of standard tablespoon and teaspoon measurements, they have things like "a pinch of patience" and "a spoonful of laughter." They're real measuring spoons, though, so the actual measurements on the back.

I have yet to use them, but might never because I want to keep them perfect. Or maybe I'm just waiting for my recipe in shining armor.
