Sparkling Dessert Wine Notes: Marenco Pineto Brachetto D'Acqui 2005

Marenco Pineto Brachetto D'Acqui 2005, made in is low alcohol at 5.5% abv. and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantia Brachetto D'Acqui. This means it is of a certified origin and a mildly sparkling wine made from the light, red Brachetto grape. Brachetto D'Acqui is made primarily in the Asti, Roero, and especially Alessandria areas in the Piemonte region. It is the red version of the Moscato d'Asti sparkling dessert wine. In the past fifteen years there have also been a few dry sparkling Brachetto wines created, but so far they haven't been made widely, and are quite rare.

The color of this wine is a deep, deep garnet red. It is sweet and frizzante (mildly sparkling) with la hint of tartness. The wines red bold fruit explodes with flavor: raspberry, grapes, sweet and sour cherries, and a hint of strawberry which is a signature of Brachetto D'Acqui sparkling wines. It has a sweet heavy body for a sparkling wine, which combined with the tartness and mild sparkle, as well as very low alcohol, make it a great aperitif or dessert wine that won't leave you too buzzed to enjoy the evening.

I tried this wine as an aperitif on Christmas Eve with my parents and we enjoyed it tremendously, especially my mother who just loved it. She doesn't drink that much anymore but is known for the fine palate for wines she had when she was younger. I was briefly quizzed all about what it was and where to get it, I'll have to make sure I keep some on hand just for her. It runs about $18 in the NYC area.
