    Monday
    Amy's Organic Ravioli Bowl

Buy it again: Without a doubt
    Fills you up: Yes
    Texture: Perfectly cooked pasta
Taste: If we got it in a restaurant, we'd be happy. The sauce was gorgeously seasoned, the generously, fluffily filled ravioli neither limp nor leaden and heck -- it's even organic.

    Tuesday
    Banquet Selects Classic Fried Chicken

    Buy it again: No way
    Fills you up: No
    Texture: Like deep-fried particle board
Taste: The batter's seasoning wasn't so bad, but gnawing through it nearly undid years of orthodontia -- and for very little reward. The few shreds of meat within were stringy, gamey and overcooked, and the pool of grease in which the whole mess swam hardly added to the meal's appeal. The potatoes and corn are best left unmentioned -- and uneaten.

Lean Pocket Applewood Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Breakfast Pocket

    Buy it again: No
    Fills you up: Yes
    Texture: Gummy
Taste: We bit into what we thought was a potato cube, then checked the ingredient list. No potatoes. It would seem that the chewy, white blob was in fact the much-touted applewood bacon. It just got worse from there, with a creepy, over-processed filling.

    Thursday
    Southwest Style Grilled Chicken

Buy it again: Just the potatoes
    Fills you up: Yes
    Texture: Misleadingly good
Taste: If they'd just stuck with the taters, we'd be telling a different tale. Those spuds are fluffy, creamy and memorably savory. The chicken, however, was slathered in an inexplicably sweet and fruity goo that somehow lost direction on the way to the Southwest.

    Friday
Lean Pockets Whole Grain Turkey, Broccoli & Cheese Pocket

Buy it again: Only on sale
    Fills you up: Yes
    Texture: A bit doughy
Taste: It would hardly be our first choice, but in a serious pinch, we wouldn't turn up our noses at it. Let's get one thing clear, though -- while the whole-grain wrapper is a cute little stab at nutrition, you're still chomping down processed cheese and nuked broccoli. Health food, this is not.

    Monday
Claim Jumper Chicken & Penne a la Vodka

    Buy it again: Maybe
    Fills you up: Yes
    Texture: A bit soggy
Taste: We weren't immediately convinced and kept grabbing just one more forkful to figure out why. Wouldn't you know, we polished off the whole darned thing. It's not the most assertive sauce straight out of the box, but woke up with a dash of black pepper. Note -- while the prep notes call for a tablespoon of water on the broccoli, half that might have been a better idea to to avoid veggie sog.

    Tuesday
    Kashi Lemon Rosemary Chicken

    Buy it again: Happily
    Fills you up: Yes
    Texture: Fresh
Taste: If someone tried to pass this off as take-out from the health food place down the street, we'd take their word for it. Flavors popped, veggies crunched, chicken stayed moist, and our tastebuds rejoiced.

    Wednesday
    Stouffer's Pepperoni & Provolone Stromboli

    Buy it again: Sure
    Fills you up: Yes
    Texture: Better that we'd expected
Taste: Holy stromboli! This is slightly dumbed-down pizza shop fare, but it's still a really solid surprise. While we'll nitpick that the bread could be a little better, the fillings proved hearty, meaty and overall pleasing. Keep a couple of 'em stashed in the freezer for lazy weeknight meals.

    Thursday
Lean Cuisine Cheddar Potatoes with Broccoli

    Buy it again: No
Fills you up: We can't imagine trying to eat the whole thing
    Texture: Mushy
Taste: It doesn't bode well for a dish when the tasters are having a hard time distinguishing potatoes from broccoli florets. The whole bowl was gummed together by a soggy, flavor-free mess that was advertised as cheddar sauce, but could just as easily have been wheat paste. Sure, this cuisine is lean, but it's 'cause no one can bear to eat more than a few bites.

Like Kashi cereals? Try them in your next recipe

Kashi, a company once known for its hippy-dippy, fiber-rich cereals with cheesy names (Heart-to-Heart and Good Friends immediately come to mind), has ditched its nerdy image and now boasts everything from cookies to crackers to frozen pizza.

The company's website even highlights a few recipes that (obviously) prominently feature its products. And like the store bought stuff, the recipes are deceptively healthy. (They even offer full nutrition info, if you're into that sort of thing).

The recipes range from stuffing to smoothies, but one that caught my eye was the Blueberry Almond bars, the stars of the recipe being the Heart-to-Heart Wild Blueberry and Oat Flakes and the GOLEAN Crunch! Honey Almond Flax cereals. Simple recipe tweaks, like adding tofu and soy milk and replacing white flour with wheat, make it the perfect guilt-free breakfast, snack or dessert.

Are you pro probiotics?

A picture of probiotic bacteriaOver at Culinate, Catherine Bennett Dunster wrote an interesting article/explanation about probiotics -- live microorganisms found in foods which may have health benefits. Dunster writes that probiotics have been reported to improve intestinal health, boost immune systems and reduce lactose intolerance, but adds that there is currently minimal strong scientific evidence to support these claims.

As an immune-suppressed, lactose-intolerant person with an auto-immune intestinal disease, I've tried my fair share of probiotics. Though I used to take a powdered, lemonade-flavored probiotic, VSL3, which I dissolved in water, I've switched to just trying to eat probiotic-friendly foods. My experiences are pretty much in line with Dunster's report, in that I don't notice a big difference in how I feel based on how much of these foods I consume (my doctors warned of this). Mostly, I just eat them because they taste good and I figure they can't hurt.

My favorite probiotic-containing food is Kashi Vive, a cereal for digestive health that I eat -- again -- because it tastes delicious. I have to be careful not to consume too much, though, because it's also high in fiber (which isn't great for my intestines). Many yogurts are also well-known for containing them, and some companies have even launched lines of yogurts aimed at promoting digestive health (though there has been backlash). Check out a longer list of brand-name foods containing probiotics here at The Nibble, and definitely let us know if you've had success with any of them!

Food & Wines's favorite whole grains

We already got some advice on which white breads were the best tasting (although you can always opt for homemade if you want to avoid store-bought entirely) but what about whole grain breads? There are so many different varieties to choose from, it's actually quite a feat to narrow down your criteria to the point where you can compare similar breads. One glance at the shelf in the grocery store shows whole wheat, honey wheat, oat bran, oat nut, multi-grain, 8-grain and dozens of other "whole grain" breads. Rather than trying to work out which might be the best, Food & Wine magazine picked out a few of their favorite whole grain products as a jumping off point, a benchmark that you can work from to find your own favorites. They selected De Cecco Whole wheat pasta, Pepperidge Farm Natural Pepperidge Farm whole wheat bread and Keebler Wheatables.

It's worth noting that the Pepperidge Farm bread did well in the white bread tasting, too, but I would choose Kashi's Tasty Little Crackers over F&W's choice of Wheatables for a whole-grain snack any day.

Get a free granola bar from Kashi

Even with a huge number of diet-friendly products appearing on grocery store shelves and constant reminders from the media about how bad junk foods and fast food are for us, some people still feel that "health food" will taste like cardboard and continue to chow down on fatty, salty and/or sugary foods that are not exactly waistline-friendly. And that's fine, in moderation, but it's important to note that healthier foods don't always taste bad.

Kashi wanted to really drive this point home, so to prove that their new Chewy Trail Mix granola bars don't taste like cardboard, they are sending out free granola bars for people to taste. Their nutritionist & brand manager, Jeff Grogg, will eat a cardboard box if people don't like them. Just sign up at their website, wait for your granola bar to arrive, then log back in and tell them what you thought. The bars have roasted almonds, cranberries and honey and are made with all natural ingredients, so it sounds like they have a head start on the cardboard, but you'll have to wait for your own bar before making up your mind.

Kashi launches frozen dinners

All you Kashi fans will be glad to know that Kashi is planning to launch a line of frozen entrees soon. According to a recent press release, the meals will be mostly chicken-based, with a few shrimp- and bean-based entrees as well. As you might expect, there'll be plenty of grains, and multi-grain pastas. The frozen dinners are supposed to hit shelves sometime next month. Now, now, contain your enthusiasm. You can wait a few weeks. There's still no word on whether the new entrees will have the same mug-shot covered boxes and colon-scrubbing properties as the other Kashi products.

Cereal Review: Kashi GOLEAN Crunch!

These "cruncy clusters...toasted to perfection" hurt my jaw. That's not to say they weren't tasty, though. Truth be told, I have another bowl of the stuff sitting on the counter right now. I've always been a fan of the Kashi Honey Puffs, so when I saw this stuff on sale two-for-one, I figured I'd give it a try. That sort of sale probably should have told me something, but last week it was two-for-one Honey Bunches of Oats (can't go wrong there).%uFFFD I like that it stands up to milk and doesn't get soggy. In fact, it didn't really even seem to notice the milk at all. Maybe this Kashi just needs time. It's a cereal that can't be rushed.

Also, it sort of reminds me of Quarry, in that it sounds like pebbles when it hits the bowl.

Snack bars are the new granola bars

Snack bars are the new granola bars. This isn’t really a news flash, but I certainly never thought of them this way. They were, by and large, previously marketed as energy bars, designed to deliver an extra dose of calories to hard-working athletes or as meal replacements for busy people. Many people don’t use these as meal replacements, though, and eat two or three a day as snacks, hence the new "snack bar" designation. Though most of the bars have 200-250 calories and less than 6 grams of fat, some can have more than 10 grams of fat and over 300 calories. Eating two or three of these adds up – and quickly.

This month, EatingWell magazine rounded up some of the best snack bar options, based on the following criteria: 225 calories or less and less than 3 grams of saturated fat, as well as at least 5 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber. The goal was to find something worth eating nutritionally as a snack and was filling enough to hold you over until your next meal.
