Irish Whiskey isn't just for St. Paddys Day

Irish Whiskey sales in the US are a drop in the glass compared to American whiskey and bourbon, but that's changing fast. Sales in the past year have increased 20% and has been one of the fastest growing spirits categories the past five years.

Part of this is that more and more is being sent to the US, with new premium bottling's joining the fray. Besides the whiskey blends, you have Single Malts, Single Grains, and the unique Pure Pot Still whiskeys. Jameson has started shipping some of these and sales are through the roof. You may see Jameson "Gold Reserve go for $60 and the top-end Rarest Vintage Reserve at $250 and up" Every now and then I get offered a taste of these treats and Faith and Begorra, it makes me glad to be an honorary Irishman for the day today, just so I can toss one back. Of course most of the Irish whiskey isn't drunk on St. Paddys Day, but year round, as one of the premium whiskey styles in the world. So have a taste of the Irish, Sláinte!

Forbes lists ten best Irish Whiskeys

Whether you consider yourself a beverage connoisseur or just want some help getting your Irish on this St. Patrick's Day, Forbes has compiled a list of their top ten must-drink Irish Whiskeys. Ranging in price from $17 - $1000 per bottle, you can certainly find something on this list that will fit any budget, and perhaps discover something new for your palate as well. Without further ado, Forbes.com's selections:
  • Bushmills 21 year old (single malt), $115, Bushmills Distillery, County Antrim
  • Midleton Very Rare (blend), $150, Midleton Distillery, County Cork
  • Redbreast 12-year-old (pure pot still), $50, Midleton Distillery, County Cork

If you'd like more information on the selections, you can view a full description of each Irish Whiskey via the link below.

New Zealand Poitin

New Zealand PoitinPoitin (pronounced posheen) is the naughty stuff the Irish distilled illegally. Rough ain't the word.

Now in time for St.Patrick's Day a New Zealand distiller has created their own version which, as is sometimes quoted as an Irish tradition, will be sweetened with a little treacle. The Southern Distilling Company is also releasing a whiskey liqueur sweetened with manuka honey. They currently produced the internationally recognised Coaster Malt.

Computer in a Whiskey Bottle

Oh those wacky Fins! Grab a bottle of hugely expensive imported Irish Whiskey and throw a PC in to it.

I should point out that they drank the whisky first. The bottle is a 1.5 litre sized Ballantine's. And full details of how they built it - from the Intel P3 733EB processor the 256MB notebook RAM through to a 40GB notebook HDD and 60W mini-ITX PSU are all detailed. Just in case you too have to endure a dull Finnish winter and have nothing better to do.
