How to Make a Meat Head for Halloween (or Any Occasion)

Is there any gathering that would not be made exponentially more festive by the addition of an edible meat head? We thought not. Here's how to craft one of your very own, inspired by a decade-old MIT student Web posting.

First, select and wash a plastic skull. If it seems especially non-food-safe, mummify it in plastic wrap. Set it aside and prepare a batch of red-colored Jell-O, using half the amount of water required by the recipe. Pour this into a shallow pan to a depth of 1/4 inch, chill and let it congeal to a rubbery state.

Black Jack Tacos Free at Taco Bell

Taco Bell is giving away free Black Jack tacos to celebrate the World Series and Halloween.

Taco Bell will give each customer a free Black Jack taco between 6 p.m. and midnight on Oct. 31 to celebrate game three of the World Series and Halloween.

The Black Jack taco is a black-shelled taco with Pepper Jack sauce.


Pumpkin Five-Spice Sweet Rolls - Feast Your Eyes

Although Halloween treats are typically served as desserts, we love the excuse to start the day off sweet provided by these delectable Pumpkin Five-Spice Sweet Rolls.

As if the sweet roll weren't intrinsically indulgent enough, blogger Rachel of Coconut & Lime updated the treat for fall, using pureed pumpkin as a base and Chinese five-spice as an unexpected yet pleasantly subtle filling. Pictured here, the seasonal bonne bouche is positively delectable, with a hint of orange revealing its autumnal base, a generous helping of gooey cream-cheese frosting, and -- one can only imagine -- a springy, moist texture that will melt in your mouth.

If you can afford yourself some autumnal decadence, go ahead and bake up a batch.

What Can I Get Your Folks? - Servers in Costume

I have nothing but speculation and conjecture to back me up, but I suspect the heyday of the uniform is over. Because really, when's the last time you saw a cleaning woman in a too-short black dress and frilly white pinafore? It's nearly impossible to find a trash collector in a bow tie or a nurse with a starched cap these days.

But while official dress codes may have relaxed nearly everywhere, most restaurant servers are still expected to wear a uniform. Even workers allowed some sartorial leeway -- many employee manuals call for any jeans, any black pants or any red bandanna – are typically issued a standard apron. Uniforms connote professionalism, cleanliness and discipline; all fine server attributes, and all apparently forgotten come holiday time.

Whether it's a show of spirit or a cynical ploy to remind customers there's somewhere else they'd rather be, servers can be counted upon to modify their uniforms in keeping with the season. I'm guilty of wearing knee socks with jingling bells in December and heart-shaped jewelry on Valentine's Day. Still, I'm stunned by what some of my colleagues wear on Halloween night. Are customers really pleased when their servers have fake blood dripping down their faces or elk-sized antlers on their heads?

Ghosts of Cupcakes Past - Feast Your Eyes

These adorable spooky cupcakes not only look the ghoulish part, but there's more to them than meets the eye -- beneath the eerie, glowing gummy-candy eyes lies a cookie dough surprise secretly nestled inside the cakes. We're positively enchanted with these cupcakes not only for their appearance but for their complex flavor layers.

Borrowing from "The Cake Mix Doctor Returns," the folks at A Baked Creation whipped up these beastly beauties using a combination of vanilla cake and instant pudding mixes, with a package of frozen cookie dough for the center. And though many cooks scoff at the use of premixed baking bases, with creatively tweaked creations like these we can't resist the extra ease. Plus, we were sold at the mere sight of the fondant ghosts floating atop the fluffy chocolate frosting.

Beyond Trick-or-Treating - Halloween Food History

While cold-hearted Halloween detractors might blame candy corn and bite-size chocolate bars for bulging kids' waistlines and tooth decay, holiday celebrants once held Halloween foods responsible for determining whom they'd marry and whether their spouses would be true.

The notion of eating Halloween foods apparently never occurred to many 19-century Americans, who instead used nuts and apples to engage the occult. The nation's first Halloweeners burnt walnuts, scattered apple peels and chomped on apples hung from strings, all in hopes of figuring out what their future held.

Halloween got its start as Samhain, a pagan autumn holiday in the British Isles marked by "mumming," or the practice of wandering from house to house and trading performances for food. Feasting -- especially on freshly harvested apples and nuts -- remained a central activity as the festival evolved into Halloween: Apple potato cake, perhaps reflecting back to the day's near-coincidence with a Roman celebration honoring the orchard goddess Pomona, was among the most popular foods. Celebrants also carved turnips and tromped into cabbage fields, believing the shape of a root plucked on Halloween would presage the shape of one's spouse.

Spider Bento - Feast Your Eyes

Although we've been especially weary of spiders ever since a Toronto man brought a black widow home with him from Whole Foods, the creativity of this festive meal charmed us. Combining potato croquettes, fish salad and salmon rice, this Halloween bento box masterfully created a spooky -- and very leggy -- spider made out of seaweed perched atop rice.

For more visually satisfying edible feasts, check out Reiko's Bento Lab on Flickr, for everything from a depiction of mustachioed Dali on rice to a bento box artfully sculpted into a face. If the food components weren't equally ingenious as their appearances, the meals would be too good to eat. Either way, one thing is certain: Never has playing with your food looked so good.

I love to host a party around Halloween time -- dressing up is optional, eating is a must! Every year I'm reminded of a story my Granny tells at Halloween. She is the queen of holiday celebrations and always had plenty of food, decorations and guests.

One Halloween, as she was giving away the best treats in the neighborhood, my family cat, Ariadne -- black as night -- decided to show off by stretching and cleaning her paws in the window. Just then, a little boy from across the street rang the doorbell. "Hey lady, did you rent that cat?" he asked my Granny, who responded quickly, "Yes, we just got her yesterday but she expires tomorrow!"

Halloween Treats - Malted Milk Eyeballs

With sweet ghost blondies and brownie bats out of the way, it's time to focus on more ghoulish fare that's not usually found on the Halloween table: Malted Milk Eyeballs.

Unfortunately, these aren't 100-percent true malted milk balls with that Whoppers-like crunch -- rumor has it those are made in a vacuum to achieve the right texture. We don't have a vacuum, nor are we interested in mass experimentation with sponge toffee to concoct something similar, so we're relying on taste. And that classic flavor is easy to recreate at home. You can buy malted milk powder in most supermarkets.

Just a bit of that powder and some chocolate (white chocolate in this case, to get the eyeball color), and soon you'll be surrounded by eerie rolling eyeballs just waiting to be devoured.
