Food Porn and Food Trucks Meet on Film

Here's a juicy item from the L.A. Weekly blog: L.A.'s well-known Flying Pig food truck, which roams the streets of Tinsel Town distributing tacos that are famous for being, well, moist and juicy, has been loaned out for a porn movie called The Flying Pink Pig. The film, out now and starring porn king Ron Jeremy as Sunny Lane, will be followed soon by a sequel, which also features Lane as the operator of a truck besieged by babes who want more than just a dollop of salsa on their hot tamales. We're no prudes, but we have to wonder where this X-rated trend will go. Are we ready for Daniel Does Dallas? How about The Domino Pizza Boy Really Delivers?The Chicks of Chipotle? or maybe Big Mac's Whopper?

In the end, we have to agree with Mimi Sheraton, former restaurant critic for The New York Times, who, although she was not commenting directly on the new food- porn phenomenon, did sum things up nicely when she told The Huffington Post: "I don't know where they eat it, that's what I can't figure out about a truck. Where the hell do you eat it?"

It's pretty obvious, ladies: The 30-second spot with Kim Kardashian lolling around in bed with a Carl's Jr. chicken salad isn't meant for us. And it's not really about that salad, either. This is full-on food porn, but let's be honest -- in fast-food ads these days, the porn is more like, well, porn. The Kardashian commercial has all the staples of the genre -- the smooth, sexy soundtrack, plenty of cleavage shots, and even an eye-opening close-up of glistening drops of dressing on her lips and falling down between her breasts. Hungry yet?

Another recent gem comes courtesy of Burger King, this time a print image that was released in Singapore of a woman seconds away from deep-throating a sandwich called the "seven-incher." (Burger King was also responsible for that bizarre spot advertising Sponge Bob Square Pants kids meals with scantily clad women dancing to "Baby Got Back.")

Not for women. Got it. But are men really buying what they're selling? Evidently, yes. The Kardashian ad comes courtesy of CKE Restaurants, the parent group of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's. The campaign actually started in 2005, with a spot featuring bathing-suit-clad Paris Hilton arching, crawling and posing her way around a wet Bentley to the tune of "I love Paris in the Summer." Oh yeah, and at some point therein, she eats a Carl's Jr. burger. (Seductively, of course.)

You feasted on turkey yesterday -- and might be doing so for the next week if your leftovers are particularly abundant. While the flavors of the Thanksgiving spread are delightful, after a few days you may find your taste buds tiring of turkey sandwiches and reheated leftovers of the same dishes. Why not reimagine your leftovers by adding different flavors altogether?

That's exactly what Elana's Pantry did. Her Turkey Chili recipe is a simple, fuss-free concoction, combining typical Thanksgiving leftovers (turkey, carrots, onion and broth) with roasted poblano peppers, cumin and oregano with some zingy fresh cilantro. An added bonus for post-Thanksgiving bloated bellies: the flavorful, brothy serving will satisfy without stuffing.

    Chichicastenango Market in Guatemala is one of the most vibrant markets in the country. Every Thursday and Sunday, vendors from around the region travel to Chici to set up varietal stands surrounding the Church of Santo Tomás. The assortment of food ranges from fresh produce to deep-fried chicken, and is available for only a few quetzales. ...

    A family of women make tortillas from blue- and white-corn masa, a dough paste composed of pestled corn. The women diligently pat out the thin, small dough discs throughout the day. Ten tortillas will cost you 2 Quetzales (50 cents).

    At the end of one of the main roads, a group of women sell clucking hens and other animals such as dogs and turkeys out of woven sacks.

    And eventually those clucking chickens end up deep-fried in the market's dining area, served with fresh beans and tortillas.

    Fresh watermelons are covered with a plastic tarp that attracts swarming flies, apparently attempting to camouflage themselves as vagrant seeds.

    Women sell freshly cut onions in the indoor produce market.

    The market is so vast that for every item of produce, there are dozens of vendors offering the same food. Onions, avocados, carrots and tomatoes are some of the most popular items sold throughout Chichi.

Sea Urchin Chic at Marea

Sea urchins, on the face of it, are not likely candidates for the title of Sexiest Seafood. Their spiny shells make them look like porcupines of the sea, and give little hint of the outrageously creamy, briny decadence that they contain. But this saffron-hued roe, whose complex, salty-sweet-sharp flavor profile is beloved by chefs, is now making diners swoon.

David Chang has been using sea urchin roe on his menu at Momofuku Ssam Bar and Ko for a long while, and now Michael White is making them the star of his menu at his new restaurant, Marea. A great article tomorrow in WSJ. magazine provides a peek at both White's droolingly anticipated new restaurant and at sea urchin, which is pictured in all of its spiny, golden glory.
