Dunkin' Donuts Pulls Dunkaccinos on Salmonella Scare

Time to stop making the Dunkaccinos. Dunkin' Donuts has temporarily stopped selling its popular coffee drinks and hot chocolate on worries equipment used to make instant nonfat dried milk may be contaminated with salmonella.

Dunkin' Donuts officials told Slashfood that none of its products were contaminated, and the temporary halt in sales is just a precautionary measure.

"We have confirmed that no Dunkin' Donuts products were contaminated," Michelle King, a spokeswoman for Dunkin' Donuts, says. "However, we have made the decision to temporarily withdraw the beverages from our stores to ensure the safety of our customers."

Exclusive - Dunkin' Donuts Brings Back Vanilla Bean Coolatta

coolattaLike every chain hailing from a specific region, Dunkin' Donuts is especially dear to many New Englanders. Once upon a time before the dawning of Starbucks, it was the only place to go for a Sunday morning coffee-and-donuts run -- usually with a groan of "time to get the donuts." In Boston, directions to Logan Airport are given via its locations: "Turn left at the first Dunkin', right at the second."

Although the chain has since gone national, it was no surprise to us that some folks -- probably New Englanders -- were furious when the Vanilla Bean Coolatta was discontinued over a year ago. It's a mysterious creation of ice and what DD's senior director of brand marketing, Scott Hudler, calls a "dairy-based cream" and the "taste of vanilla bean."

And although it's a "trade secret" as to whether there's actually vanilla bean in there, the thing has crazed fans. A quick Internet search reveals one enraged customer visited four separate shops the day the Coolattas were discontinued more than a year ago.

Happily enough, they're back, starting Wednesday.

Dunkin Donuts Waffle Sandwich

waffle breakfast sandwichThe breakfast sandwich market gets a little more crowded with Dunkin Donuts' newest creation: The Waffle Breakfast Sandwich. Yes. I know. Calm down. The sandwich consists of egg, cheese and bacon between two maple syrup-flavored waffles.

The composition evokes memories of Junior's Restaurant's brisket-on-latke sandwich, but the DD sandwich's taste overkill is more reminiscent of the famous Jimmy Dean sausage-in-a-pancake-on-a-stick. And, like the sausage-in-a-pancake-on-a-stick, the bacon-egg-cheese-maple-waffle sandwich possesses a dubious deliciousness.

The mix of artery-clogging morning cholesterol with the sweetness of maple syrup is almost too much to bear, yet somehow you cannot resist devouring the last sticky crumb. Devouring, wishing that the waffle was truly waffle-sized and not English muffin-sized. And hating yourself for wishing that. And swearing to go straight to the gym as soon as you are done. And craving another one.

Battle of the breakfast sandwich

One of the things I truly missed when I left New York City was the glory of the corner bodega breakfast sandwich. So, I'm always interested when one of the local West Coast, drive-thru, fast food franchise joints comes up with a new combo of bread, egg and cheese. The two most recent entries, Dunkin' Donuts' Egg White Turkey Sausage Flatbread Sandwich and Carl's Jr.'s Monster Breakfast Sandwich lie proudly at opposite ends of the spectrum. A clear-cut rivaly of health vs. indulgence, but what of taste?

Dunkin' Donuts gives away free donuts on Tax Day

Is tax day bringing you down? Dunkin' Donuts wants to help raise your spirits. All day today, if you buy a cup of coffee at DD, they'll throw in a free donut. Because while there's no such thing in life as a free lunch, on April 15th, at least you can get yourself a free donut. I recommend the chocolate glazed.

Starbucks is feeling the burn...and doesn't want you to smell it

The company that introduced (and hooked) us all on the $4 cup of coffee is starting to feel the burn -- of the economy turning south, and of competitor's cheaper cuppas.

In its annual meeting today, Starbucks' newly-returned founder and CEO Howard Schultz laid out plans for staunching the chains' loss of sales. Among other ideas, the ubiquitous coffee house might introduce loyalty cards...and do away with using flavor-locked bags of pre-ground coffee in its stores.

Seems nobody likes that burned-coffee smell anymore. Instead, stores will once again start using only freshly-ground coffee, and will more carefully tailor its hot food selections to those that don't get in the way of that all-important fresh coffee aroma.

In answer to growing competition from the likes of Dunkin' Donuts and McDonald's (both of which serve a fine cup of coffee, in my humble opinion), Starbucks began testing $1 cup of house coffee in its Seattle stores earlier this year.

Taste Test: Dunkin Donuts Coffee (brewed at home)

When it comes to coffee, while I can say that I have to drink a steaming hot cup of it at least once a day, I have to admit that I'm not very - how do you say? -- discriminating. Basically, I'm your street variety caffeine addict who only cares that it gives me a high, even if only for 15 minutes.

So is it fair for me to "review" the tiny sample of Dunkin Donuts coffee that the company sent me to try? Absolutely!

I brewed the entire sample pack with the intention of giving it a full test run -- one cup fresh after brewing taken black, one cup maybe a few minutes later with my usual splash of soy milk. Was it acidic? Balanced? Deep? How the hell do I know? This is basically what I will say about Dunkin Donuts coffee.

It tastes nothing like doughnuts.

But I understand that the real appeal of Dunkin Donuts coffee comes from knowing that you are getting coffee that is the same coffee they serve in the pink and orange temple to fried dough. With that understanding, Dunkin Donuts coffee is pretty darn good.

Dunkin Donuts is going to China

Dunkin Donuts is opening its first store in Shanghai, China this Spring, with plans to open 100 stores over the next 10 years.

Yeah, so an American retail chain is expanding overseas. So, why would you need a passport?

Because the Dunkin Donuts in China, along with the regular menu items like, oh, coffee and doughnuts, will serve special fare that is tailored to the local Chinese tastes, which we won't get here. That means Chinese customers can get things like honeydew melon doughnuts and mochi rings.

And they probably won't have Rachael Ray as their spokesmodelperson.

Free iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts on March 21

Next Thursday, Starbucks is giving away free 12-ounce cups of coffee for a few hours in the morning. If you can wait a couple more days for your free drink, Dunkin' Donuts can do one better.

On March 21st, the first day of spring, Dunkin' will "put winter on ice" with their first ever Free Iced Coffee Day. All day long, Dunkin' Donuts locations all over the US will be giving away free 16-ounce iced coffees. Their iced coffees are "double brewed" for smoothness and come in nine different flavors, in addition to regular coffee.

The company reports that iced coffees are their second most popular menu item after hot coffees and that they sold over 150 million cups last year alone!

Dunkin' does breakfast sandwiches

Dunkin' Donuts has been trying to change its image all year. Some say "if it's not broke, don't fix it." Others, like the firms that now own the company, don't really subscribe to that theory and concentrate of fixing things anyway. In this case, they're planning to add non-breakfast items to their menus. But consumers first have to adjust to the idea of Dunkin' Donuts as more of a fast food restaurant, and less of a coffee shop. To that end, the company is rolling out some breakfast sandwiches that look much like the ones available at other quick service restaurants.

The Sausage Supreme Omelet Sandwich is made with eggs, sausage and American cheese on a bagel and the Supreme Omelet has bacon, cheeses and eggs on a croissant. At least they didn't try to come up with a Dunkin' Donuts version of the Luther burger, which might have been a tempting choice since they are known for their donuts.

Dunkin Donuts serves non-breakfast items

The driving force behind the changes that Dunkin Donuts has gone through in the past year seems to come from the three private firms that bought the company last year, steering it away from tradition and into new markets. Some changes, like adding smoothies and better coffees, are minor, but others are big. The chain does 70% of its business before 11am but several locations will now begin offering more savory lunch and dinner menu items in an attempt to attract customers throughout the day.

So far, at least three of these concept stores are planned, mostly to be in existing locations. They will offer foods such as hot dogs wrapped in pastry and flatbread sandwiches. The stores will also have a design makeover, with wooden chairs instead of plastic swivel ones, and with more liberal use of the chain's signature orange and maroon colors.

Since one previous attempt to sell sandwiches and soups was not a success, the Dunkin' executives have to hope that the new concept catches on with "the Dunkin' tribe," or they'll simply have to go back to the drawing board yet again.

The Uncooling of Iced Coffee

Now that McDonald's is displaying proud banners throughout NYC that they have "iced coffee!" you can be sure that the once unusual and eccentric beverage is a trend that's exceeded its critical mass. Isn't Mickey D's the barometer of when trends reach the point where they become totally and forever uncool? In the last few years-in New York City at least-iced coffee was the domain of Starbucks and the assorted bagel shops, bakeries and internet/bookstore boutiques. The perfect blend of thirst quench and caffeine jolt, the iced coffee gives you a lift, then makes your tongue shrink up from dehydration as it pulls all the available moisture out of your body to assist in its chemical conversions within your body, but it does NOT make you all gaseous like soda pop might, so you can walk down the street, jaw set in grim determination, and suck that thing down and never make one illusion-of-togetherness shattering "noise."

Dunkin' might drop the "Donuts"

The executives at Dunkin' Donuts are considering dropping the word "Donuts" from their sign, rechristening the popular chain "Dunkin'" to reflect their expanded offerings. They seem to feel that potential customers might be confused by the name, thinking that the shop offers only donuts.

Personally, I think that this would be a huge mistake on the part of the company. Over the years, they have built a successful brand that has a tremendous amount of name recognition. Not only does such a move reflect poorly on the perception of the intelligence of the customers, but it is just plain silly. Burger King has not dropped the "burger" from its name, despite the fact that it offers sandwiches and salads. And why not? Because they are most famous for their burgers, just like Dunkin' Donuts is most famous for their donuts.

Their new "America runs on Dunkin'" ad campaign might be a first attempt to see how people will respond to a shortened name.
