"Dave Thomas" news and stories

Wendy's New D.T. Double

First there were the sea-salt fries, then Dave's Hot 'n' Juicy Cheeseburger. Now, there's the D.T. Double. Wendy's is on an end-of-year roll. Another homage to founder Dave Thomas, the D.T. Double, reports Nation's Restaurant News, has pretty much all the components of a Big Mac: two burgers, two slices of cheese, tomatoes, onion, lettuce, and a "signature sauce." Launching in Rhode Island and Texas, it will go nationwide if customers cotton to another Dave burger.

But we're wondering: Isn't "D.T." (also the abbreviation for delirium tremens) a little depressing? Wendy's, may we make a suggestion? Stick with just plain "Dave's" for your Double.

Arby's to own Wendy's

Wendy's logoWhen I was young and my family lived in Los Angeles, we had a tradition that we'd go to Wendy's for dinner any time the power went out. In our little Eagle Rock bungalow, the power went out nearly every time it rained, which meant we got over to Wendy's at least once every couple of months. My parents liked Wendy's because they had baked potatoes and a salad bar, and as far as fast food went, it seemed better than many of the other alternatives.

However, it looks like Wendy's, soon won't be Wendy's, at least not as we currently know it. Arby's, the chain known for big (and in my opinion, mediocre) roast beef sandwiches, is gobbling up Wendy's for a cool $2.34 billion dollars. I am sure that Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's, is rolling over in his grave. According to this AP article, the rest of his family certainly isn't happy about it.

Design a burger, win $25,000

Wendy's foodHave you ever eaten in a restaurant or bought a food product at the store and said to yourself, "heck, I can make something better than this!"? Well, then this contest is for you.

Wendy's is looking for someone to design a new burger for them. You get to choose from a variety of various toppings, cheeses, and sauces. I have to admit that pepperoni on a burger sounds quite good, though I don't know if I'd go with sauerkraut. The winner gets $25,000 and they might add your creation to the regular menu in 2008. Runners up get free burgers for a year! (Wendy's are my favorite fast food burger, I should enter.)

The site says "may we suggest you start your burger the way we start all Wendy's burgers - with a fresh, never frozen, beef patty." What, did we have another option? Heh.
