Dairy Queen Midnight Truffle Blizzard
Hooray for the Dairy Queen Blizzard, the dessert that combines ice cream, candy and sometimes even cookies all in one (swiftly melting) creation.The sweet treat is given even greater pride of place on the DQ menu thanks to its "Blizzard of the Month" feature. Former BoMs have included caramel cheesecake and turtle Oreo (pictured), but it's the divine midnight truffle -- a blend of vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup and truffle bits -- that's enjoying an April shout-out.
If contrasting crunchiness is preferable in the creamy Blizzard, then the softness of the truffle chunks are a bit of a letdown. But if maximum richness is the goal, then their melt-in-your-mouth texture works quite nicely with the smooth chocolatiness of the ice cream. Fight the current heat wave to slurp this sucker down before it turns from a Blizzard into slush.
Does Dairy Queen Think You Can't Add?
File this under "durrrr:" Some items on Dairy Queen's new "Sweet Deals" menu will actually cost 8 percent more than buying individual items off the regular menu, reports Consumerist. For example, a grilled chicken wrap which costs $1.39 on the regular menu costs $3 for two on the "Sweet Deals" menu, which was presumably created in response to the recession. That's $0.11 more for each chicken wrap. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it does make you wonder whether this was a deliberate on the part of Dairy Queen to squeeze a few extra cents out of customers who aren't exactly thinking about multiplying chicken wrap prices in the drive-through lane. $0.11 times several thousand per day does add up quickly. I'm going to preface this by admitting a few painful truths. First of all, I have to admit that I have been known to occasionally become completely addicted to various fast food treats. For example, in the 1990's, I had an almost rabid attraction to Wendy's' Big Dave's Deluxe burger. Basically a sloppy agglomeration of everything that is good to eat and bad for you, the Big Dave's Deluxe occupied an outsize portion of my free mental space for a fairly long period of time. In fact, even now, I occasionally find myself ruminating about its fried onions and crispy bacon...My second difficult admission has to do with my age. I have to admit that I am, indeed, old enough to remember when McDonald's McNuggets first hit the market. As a young fast-food junkie, I was immediately enamored of the crunchy little slabs of pre-formed chicken gristle, and loved experimenting with the various sauces. In fact, for a couple of years they were my go-to food whenever I found myself at the golden arches (aka "Kiddie Nirvana").

Kids, don't try this at home
It's an old story in marketing. Play to the children, in order to get their parents to spend money on their product. It's why Saturday morning cartoons were once so popular and why lots of the most kid-appealing stuff is placed on the grocery store shelves at their eye-level. Mostly though, this advertising tries to be somewhat discreet.
Not satisfied with the soft sell, one Dairy Queen went for a less subtle approach, entreated kids to "scream until Daddy stops the car." Sadly, this method would have backfired with my parents and would have resulted in us never seeing the inside of a Dairy Queen until we were old enough to get there on our own steam.

Of course, a lot of people would say "just avoid fast food altogether!" But sometimes you just need a Wendy's double cheeseburger and fries.
The folks over at A Calorie Counter have looked at the nutritional info for all of the fast food outlets (McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, A&W, Arby's, Hardee's, In-N-Out Burger, Jack in the Box, Little Caesars, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Sonic, Subway, Taco Bell, Wendy's, White Castle, Popeyes, Del Taco, Carl's Jr., and Dairy Queen) and have compiled a list of the 88 worst foods you can buy, in terms of the amount of trans fats. Don't drink these beverages this summer
Well, maybe once in a great while, but don't make it a daily thing, OK?
HungryGirl.com has the list of the five summer drinks that will destroy your diet. Sometimes we don't think of the massive amount of calories and/or sugar and/or fat that are in those seductive cold drinks. For example, Krispy Kreme's Mocha Dream Chiller has 670 calories, 28 grams of fat, and 58 grams of sugar (that's for the 12 oz). Dunkin Donuts' Vanilla Bean Coolatta has 440 calories, 17 grams of fat, and 69 grams of sugar.
The other drinks on the list are from Starbucks, Fatburger, and Dairy Queen.
Frank Bruni does fast food
I mentioned this story briefly in the roundup of this week's NY Times dining section, but didn't elaborate there because it really deserves its own post. Frank Bruni, the food critic known for his love of the finer foods in life, hit the road in a rented Ford Taurus and ate his way through 42 fast food restaurants, mostly in the southern half of the country. His goal was to find out the best fast food chains in the country, "from familiar national chains, relatively unfamiliar regional chains and tiny local chains [he] had never encountered." He stopped in at places like McDonald's, Dairy Queen, Chick-fil-a and Whataburger, eating burgers, fries andother fried foods in pursuit of his goal.
