Pie in the Sky - Feast Your Eyes

whoopie pie
Whoopie pies are one of those wonderful concoctions of debatable origin and undebatable deliciousness. A few months ago, a piece in the New York Times proclaimed it was having "its moment," though plenty of its champions knew full well that the perennial classic needed no such official declaration.

This photo of a mint whoopie pie from This Chick Bakes beautifully illustrates the treat's timeless appeal, and looks like it has all of the hallmarks of whoopie pie greatness, with cakey chocolate layers sandwiching just the right amount of creamy mint filling. The chocolate-mint combination points to the endless flavor possibilities that the treats present to the adventurous sweet tooth. Though originally simple snacks created by the Pennsylvania Amish, today's bakers take them in all sorts of inspired directions. And if this photo is any hint, this could taste like the best peppermint patty on the planet, unquestionably worthy of the shout of joy its name entails.

Sinfully delicious: Anna Olson's Chocolate Mint Truffle Cake

chocolate mint cake
I try to catch Sugar whenever I find myself in front of a television with cable, if only to drool at the insanely tasty looking concoctions that Anna Olson whips up. For some reason, however, I never tried one of her recipes until this weekend, and now I'm hooked.
cakes

The above picture is a slice of her Chocolate Mint Truffle Cake, which I made last week. This cake perfectly combines the rich and heavy flavor of chocolate with the sinfully delicious bite of mint. Wet, this the most divine batter that I've ever licked -- the sort that makes you want to slurp it with a spoon rather than sent it to the hot confines of a 300 degree oven. The same goes for the truffle glaze -- I dare you to not take at least one melted chocolate taste.

Tips after the jump.

Indiana Jones and the inexplicable M&M promotion

bag of Indiana Jones M&Ms
Let it be known that I am a die hard Limited Edition Foods fan. I lived and died by Pepsi Kona, and I essentially redefine myself with each new incarnation of Kit Kat. That said, imagine my excitement when a friend of mine presented me with New Indiana Jones Mint Crisp M&Ms. (While they do not specifically say "Limited Edition", they do imply as much with "Get 'M' Before They're Lost!") One look at these puppies and you know you're in for an epicurean adventure of chilled-monkey-brains-buffet proportions, 'cause these M&Ms are all kinds of divergent from the original.

To wit:
  • They are shades of green and white
  • In place of the simple "M", some of the candies have mystical graphics (including a skull, a compass, a temple, and Indy's hat)
  • They are chocolate-mint flavored
  • Their core is a rice crisp

Chocolatemint water from Metromint, coming soon

chocolatemint water from Metromint
I have always been a sucker for anything mint flavored. I go through phases where I drink mint tea by the gallon. I always have mint gum in my bag. And I am capable of eating mint chocolate chip ice cream by the carton (and on many occasions, I have). When I first came across a display of Metromint at my local gourmet grocery store, I immediately pick up a bottle to go with the panini I was buying for lunch. It was perfect with the sandwich, refreshing and cool, with a significant tingle of mint.

The good folks at Metromint have recently added Chocolatemint to the three flavors they already had available (Spearmint, Lemonmint and Orangemint). According to Josh Spear, this water is delicious and leaves you with the taste of chocolate long after the water is gone (and for far fewer calories). Chocolatemint should be in stores in time for Valentine's Day.
