The 6 Most Outrageous Beverage Lawsuits

We told you about the stomach-turning lawsuit filed by a man who claims he found a mouse in his can of Monster Energy Drink. The company says the can was left unattended, which is how the mouse got there. (Our money's actually on this version -- wouldn't a mouse have deteriorated in all that acidic soda?) Either way, the "Case of the Mouse in a Can" is just one of many wacky lawsuits filed against beverage companies. The Daily Meal has a list of the top six -- anyone remember the guy who tried to sue Bud Light because his beer didn't produce hot babes like the commercials promised?

This (Free) Bud's for You

In my early 20s I was an indiscriminate drinker, with my taste buds and intoxication level governed by my wallet. I filled my stomach with lowest-common-denominator liquor and beer -- preferably free. An open bar could make me try any reprehensible beverage, which explained why, at 24, I often turned my tongue orange on Sparks.

But instead of a gimmicky malt beverage, an unlikely beverage is inviting twentysomethings to take a free test drive: Budweiser. In a new ad campaign called "Grab Some Buds," Anheuser-Busch is hoping to introduce young drinkers to the pleasures of its innocuous lager. The campaign culminates with Budweiser National Happy Hour on September 29th, when bargoers can suck down six to 12 ounces of free Bud.

Is this a kind gesture on A-B's part? Hardly. Last year, Bud sales nose-dived 9 percent, and the numbers are looking equally grim in 2010. Craft beer, light beer and even crappier sub-premium beer (mmm...Keystone Light) have sapped the Clydesdale brand's strength.

Budweiser Launches 55 Calorie Beer

Anheuser-Busch

by Joshua M. Bernstein

With mountains of deep-fried chicken wings and enough guacamole to turn you green, the Super Bowl is the day when diets die a cholesterol-choked death.

But while your waist may balloon, who says you need to sport a matching beer belly too? This week marks the release of Anheuser-Busch's Select 55, a light beer that's barely more caloric -- and flavorful -- than water.

Clocking in at a slender 55 calories and 1.9 grams of carbs per 12-ounce bottle, Select is the self-professed "world's lightest beer," a statement that's as enticing as "the world's tastiest rice cake."

Truth is, no craft-beer convert would dare be caught within 100 yards of this fizzy diet beverage. To this jaded drinker, Select 55 seems like another blind grasp at rapidly disappearing market share -- beer sales sunk another 2.2 percent in 2009.

Here's a tip, Anheuser-Busch: If you want to regain your money-earning mojo, focus less on hail-mary gimmicks and start brewing beer that, you know, actually tastes good. A touchdown for our taste buds is a win-win for everyone.

What Was Your First Beer of 2009?

The Budweiser logo looms
The first Monday of 2009 is upon us: The first day reality sets in.

Was it just me or did the holidays fall in a very precarious position this year? Both Christmas and New Year's landed on Thursdays, leaving their respective Eves to precede on Wednesdays, resulting in anemic two-day work weeks barely worth thinking about, causing almost an entire 16 day period to be a wash, thus making getting back to any sort of actual life that much more difficult.

But here I am. My point: None.

However, I am building to a larger sentiment that New Year's Eve 2009 has come and passed without but a squeak from me on the beer blog -- begging the question: "How did Slashfood's resident beer snob kick off 2009 (beer-wise of course)?" Well, I'm not so proud to admit that after the requisite champagne toast, my first beer of 2009 was... drum roll please... a Budweiser!

Yikes! Equally requisite explanation: NYE09 was spent at a house party with but one keg to satisfy all beer drinkers' tastes, so I swallowed my snobbery and kicked off the new year with a Bud draft out of the barrel.

My beer expertise did come in handy though when someone was needed to tap said keg. So there: my knowledge did pay off after all.

We're now five days and one full weekend into 2009. What was your first beer of the year? Or fill me in on any interesting NYE beer drinking tales. Otherwise it's going to be a long, boring year, people!
