Marcel's Quantum Kitchen -- Enter to Win an Apple iPad 2 (Slashfood)
Mar 15th 2011 2:08PM I can't wait for a cooking show that actually reaches out there, beyond "here's how to make a bechamel."

What's Up with the High Price of Bacon? (Slashfood)
Aug 4th 2010 10:25AM Wait a sec. There's apparently a natural increase in bacon demand over the summer (as you covered here), but have you not stopped to realize that /food, among many many many other food sites, has been flogging bacon ice cream, candy, cookies, entrees, wraps, toppings, and snacks in every form, in addition to pork belly in every imaginable configuration and flavoring ... for nigh-on three to five years? So that every upscale, non-vegetarian resto in the world has to have a pork belly dish somewhere on the menu. And you don't see a connection between demand for bacon, the price of bacon, and these facts? That's not freaky at all. Sounds perfectly predictable and normal to me. And "climate change" doesn't even enter into that discusson.

Jeremy Piven, Actor and Sushi-Addict (Slashfood)
Dec 23rd 2008 10:01AM Color me extremely skeptical. The guy is exhausted, and rightfully so, given his Broadway run. The mercury MAY be elevated ... "more than the doc has ever seen" ... but when was the last time YOU had a mercury level drawn? Ever? This doctor is more into alternative fringe medicine, herbal potions, and bodybuilding than actual epidemiological practice. And I have a hard time believing that simply consuming sushi can cause a level of poisoning to take you out of your normal activities. Sorry. That's just not that much fish! It just isn't! And why aren't all the Japanese actors falling prey to mercury poisoning? I bet they eat more fish than Piven.
Everyone thinks of the horrible neurotoxicity of the mercury in Minimoto, Japan, years ago. But that was a situation of in-utero exposure combined with severe and overwhelming contamination that was grossly observable.
I wish Mr. Piven the best as he recovers from what is surely incredible exhaustion. I once performed in a very small run of a very small play in a very small town (over several weeks). It laid me low and affected my balance, sense of smell, and well-being: Effects that have lasted 'til today. I don't think I had one bite of sushi during that whole time. But I was EXHAUSTED. Now, multiply that by 100 and I get an idea of what a Broadway run of a successful production must be like. -
Is a spill catcher necessary? (Slashfood)
Jul 9th 2008 9:36AM I think it's a great idea, but not sure I'd buy one. I use a cookie sheet sometimes, but usually one of my old pizza pans to catch spills. Oh, and I also have a fabulous self-clean oven. It's just that all that burned pie juice ends up smoking and smelling up the joint even the first day it happens, and sometimes you just can't clean the oven that night. So I like being able to remove the spilly mess right after I take my pie out.

Don't let the dishwasher ruin your marriage (Slashfood)
Mar 29th 2008 3:17PM I wouldn't know what to do without my dishwasher. It is usually loaded to the gills, and I still have pots and pans to handwash, so I know I'm saving time and effort. And mine works just fine. No, my husband does not know how to load it. I reload it when I can (I'm not always around when he starts it). What drives me nutty is putting the clean dishes away (no matter how they were washed). He more often than not fails to return items to their normal resting places, leading me to hunt for them for 10 minutes the next time I need them. AAARRGGHHH!!

Do chain restaurants promote 'extreme eating'? (Slashfood)
Feb 27th 2007 7:32PM I am afraid this will be like every other "well intentioned" effort to educate. If you're already nutrition-conscious, you already understand that cheese and cream have calories in them. If you are, however, nutritionally challenged (shall we say), I just doubt strongly that adding calorie counts to a menu will make much difference to you, and to your choices. That's not why you're eating at Applebee's, ya know?
