High Fructose Corn Syrup Seeks a Makeover (Slashfood)
Sep 14th 2010 5:40PM The corn syrup commercials are misleading at best. They try to say they are natural, but hydrochloric acid is used to break down corn starch into corn syrup. They say hydrochloric acid is natural because our stomach naturally produces it. I wouldn't eat anything that has been broken down by the equivalent of my stomach acid just so that it mimics sugar.
As far as whether it contributes to obesity, according to a few medical journals, corn syrup inhibits the production of leptin in the body. Leptin is a key indicator in sending the stomachs message to the brain that it is full. Below is a link to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
