Staph Bacteria Found in Half of U.S. Meat (Slashfood)
Apr 17th 2011 3:01AM The only way a cutting board is going to cross contaminate a kitchen is if it isn't washed after each use and it used for more than just raw meat. Bleach isn't an antibiotic and still does a VERY good job of killing staph (and pretty much all other bacteria) use proper safety.
Most people aren't going to have a problem with staph plus it is most dangerous when it enters an open wound NOT when it is ingested which is why meat doesn't currently need to be tested for staph. -
Do Food Dyes Make Kids Hyperactive? FDA to Weigh In (Slashfood)
Mar 28th 2011 6:49PM The evidence is weak, only one small study showed a link to increased hyperactivity in kids who already had ADHD the rest is basically just anectdotal evidence and the plural of anecdote is anecdotes not data. I think that study MIGHT be enough for a parent to decide to avoid those dyes if their kid has ADHD (dyes have to be listed as ingredients). However since the dyes are not toxic (hyperactivity is an annoyance to parents and teacher not a life threatening condition) and only potentially affect a subset of children I see no good reason to ban them.

Magnolia Bakery Owners Sue Over Greek Cupcake Shop (Slashfood)
Mar 25th 2011 5:20PM No, but registering the domain seems like a pretty clear case of trademark infringement. As far as the cupcakes go, they might have a case for stealing trade secrets which is actionable if it was done through improper means (and buying them from a former owner would certainly qualify, she gave up the rights to those trade secrets when she left).

7 Supermarket Rip-Offs (Slashfood)
Mar 23rd 2011 1:43PM Okay, I'm totally against the whole gluten-free hype for people who have no medical reason to be on a gluten-free diet but I have to object to the caption. A group of people with celiac disease was followed for 2 years and most gained weight is EXACTLY what should be expected. One of the main results of eaten gluten for those with celiac disease is weight loss and nutrient deficiency, switching to a gluten-free diet for these people means their bodies can adequately absorb nutrients and calories. You cannot take the results of a group of people with a serious medical condition and apply it to healthy people.

One More State Joins the Drug-Test-for-Food-Stamps Debate (Slashfood)
Feb 23rd 2011 8:33PM So drug addicts deserve to starve and so do their children (most recipients of food stamps have children)?
These benefits are based on income and need, whether or not the person uses drugs doesn't change their need for food. Considering the fact that the same lawmakers proposing this law are also opposed to funding treatment programs for addicts it's clear the only purpose is to further marginalize and punish drug users and make it more difficult for them to stop using or to get/keep a job. There's also an assumption in this that food stamp recipient are all unemployed when the fact is many ARE employed, just in jobs that pay so little that they can't support their families. -
Environmentalist Banned From Restaurant (Slashfood)
Aug 27th 2010 1:34PM The restaurant is well within it's rights to ban him but it was an incredibly stupid move. The proper way to deal with it would have been to nod politely and say you would consider it (even if that's a complete lie). By kicking him out they've turned the situation from a problem with a single annoyed customer to a public relation problem that is going to hurt their business.

What, No Wings? A Blue Cheese Challenge on 'Iron Chef America' (Slashfood)
May 10th 2010 1:34PM Yeah, I've also heard they are told it's one of 3 ingredients. It's pretty clear they have some warning of what the ingredient is or may be. Now to be fair, considering how pungent bleu cheese if they didn't know what the ingredient was already they probably did as soon as they got near it.

The ActiFry: Does Less Oil Equal Less Fat? (Slashfood)
Apr 8th 2010 3:33PM Also looks ideal for a frying phobic person like me but only if it can also do fish and chicken. I'm not afraid of fried food but of open vats of hot oil.

Worshipping at the Altar of Food (Slashfood)
Mar 2nd 2010 5:26PM My problem with a lot of this "food activism" is that much of it is more about being self-righteous or food status than really truly enjoying food. I love food, I might even say I worship it, but it's in the enjoyment of what I eat. As long as I stick to the concept of all things in moderation I think I'll be fine.

Ignore "Use By" Dates? (Slashfood)
Feb 20th 2010 3:48AM Last I checked very few foods come with a "use by" date. they come with a "sell by" date (I have started seeing meat labeled with "use or freeze by" date but in one local store). The implication here is that they need to be sold a reasonable use time before going bad. I thought this was well known but apparently not.
