10 Greatest Cooking Shows of All Time (Slashfood)
Dec 30th 2009 5:50PM I agree that the original "Iron Chef" is the best cooking show ever, but what about the "Frugal Gourmet"?

Foods of Nochebuena (Slashfood)
Dec 24th 2009 10:16AM Thank you for all the comments.
One thing Boricuas excel at is keeping our traditions, however "diluted" in the diaspora. One aspect of our culture is always kept alive, be it our food, religion, language, or holidays. We are a proud people who have resisted much. I for one, refuse to allow my son ignorance of his heritage. My wife and I are teaching him Spanish alongside English and keeping holiday events like Nochebuena and Three Kings Day alive.

Foods of Las Posadas (Slashfood)
Dec 16th 2009 5:54PM That's fantastic, Tina. It's difficult to keep traditions alive from one generation to the next. My wife is Mexican American and most of her grandparents' customs have fallen by the wayside after three generations in this country. Even I as a native Puerto Rican find it hard to continue some customs here in the States. It takes work, but it's part of who we are, right? That's why my wife and I are making it a point to introduce our son to some of our traditions (namely, Day of the Dead and Nochebuena). Writing and reading about it sure has been a tremendous help.

Eat Local Week in Austin (Slashfood)
Dec 15th 2009 12:50PM One of my favorite newish Austin restaurants is Frank. Their Jackalope dog is fantastic: rabbit-antelope sausage with huckleberry compote, sriracha aoili and applewood smoked cheddar. While the Jackalope is made nearby in downtown, the other offerings are made in-house from local suppliers.

Chile Pork and Black Beans With Chorizo (Slashfood)
Dec 13th 2009 9:35PM I didn't specify because I've made it with both. Either can be used, as both aren't always available in all areas.

December Food Festivals (Slashfood)
Dec 8th 2009 10:27PM Thanks for the catch. You are correct. However, the Portland Ale festival Web site does state it as a "Belgian Ale."

Foods of the Day of the Dead (Slashfood)
Oct 30th 2009 12:21PM Doña Maria can also be found in bodegas. The one across the street from my old apartment in Sunset Park stocked it as well as imported mole paste. But, Doña Maria is a great stand-by.
If you have the time, try any of the simple mole recipes found online or in a cookbook. My mother-in-law makes a great mole from scratch. If you have a couple of days, try a difficult one. -
Fried Foods at State Fair of Texas (Slashfood)
Sep 29th 2009 11:56AM I have a confession to make. I had Deep Fried Butter a third time. All for research and blogging, of course. How many miles will I have to ride my bike to burn off the calories?
