Arkansas police continue to search for two suspects in the shooting death of a Salvation Army major on Christmas Eve.
Salvation Army Major Philip Wise was killed outside the organization’s community center in North Little Rock, Arkansas as his three young children looked on.
Wise had worked for the Salvation Army for 16 years and had been at the Little Rock location for 3 years.
"He was so important to that community," said North Little Rock Police Department spokesman Terry Kuykendahl told FoxNews.com.
"This has been a tremendous blow to (them)."
Thanks to private citizens' donations, police are offering a reward of up to $3,000 for any information leading to the suspects' arrests.
The suspects are described as two African-American males and are believed to be 'armed with handguns.' Police are following up on leads, but are asking the public to help them by contacting them with any bit of information they may have.
Police said the suspects were last seen running on foot towards a government-funding housing community in the area.
One co-worker described Wise as a "big, old teddy bear" who had a passion for music, Kuykendahl told FoxNews.com. Wise was well-known in the community for his work with disadvantaged children.
"Our entire community is saddened by this horrible crime," said North Little Rock Police Department Chief Danny Bradley, according to Todaysthv.com.
"Investigators will be working through the weekend on this case and we'll have a relentless effort to try and find the people who committed this horrible crime."
Arkansas police said two men accosted Philip Wise and his children — ages, 4, 6 and 8 — about 4 p.m. Thursday. He says one man pulled a gun, demanded money and then shot Wise.
Wise's wife, Cindy, also a major in the Salvation Army, was inside the center and called 911, but he died on the scene.

Police said they don't know what the motive was for the shooting.
A memorial fund will be set up for the Wise family on Monday. The Salvation Army told the Arkansas Democrat Gazette that any donations made in Wise’s name will go toward a music program at the organization’s summer camp.
Police are asking the public to contact them at (501) 758-1234 with any information that might help lead them to the suspects. -

Free housing deals for Salvation Army officers create image problem (WalletPop)
Jan 6th 2010 9:20AM Salvation Army officers live a very modest lifestyle. Real Estate prices vary with the areas they serve in. In many areas, $350,000 is not much to pay.
The average Salvation Army officer receives about $20,000 in cash compensation per year. Most cannot live on that especially if you have 3 or four children. Many officers serve in high crime areas so they live in the safety and security of the suburbs for their families sake.
I have been in many Salvation Army officers homes. None of them was anything other than modest at best.
Like most other churches, The Salvation Army provides them housing. They take what they get unless the house is in such disrepair and so old it requires the occasional purchase of a new one.
Compared to the 400,000 dollars a year the Director of the American Red Cross receives, $20,000 in compensation is minuscule for Salvation Army leaders.
The newspaper article was misleading at best if not intentionally meant to harm these great servants of the people.. -
Is Obama on the Right Track Going After Rush? (Politics Daily)
Jan 31st 2009 9:13PM Did you consider that the Repubs' are just simply against the stimulus and Rush had nothing to do with it?
While that is probably true, it is just like the media to bring Limbaugh into an issue he has little impact on. It makes the repubs' look like sheep. -

Who Did Barack Obama Feast With During Bush's Victory Lap? (Politics Daily)
Jan 16th 2009 11:20AM Obama has become a legend in his own mind. The only speeches he is interested in are his own. His pre inauguration behavior has been disrespectful of the sitting President.
However, all things come home to roost, unfortunately, at our expense. -
Who Did Barack Obama Feast With During Bush's Victory Lap? (Politics Daily)
Jan 16th 2009 11:18AM Obama has become a legend in his own mind. He is only interested in his own speeches. All these policy photo op's before he takes office are an indication of the giant ego. His behavior, in part, is an afront to the sitting President.
Obama has no grace or style. He is superficial at best.
Having said that, I do wish our new President well. The economy is in a mess, the war has only gone well recently and we need a real leader. Time will reveal the real man. -
The Vice President to Nowhere (Politics Daily)
Sep 2nd 2008 8:26PM We have no facts on troopergate yet. A pregnant daughter can happen to anyone. We have not yet heard much from the VP candidate yet. All of this and those against McCain are rushing to make outrageous judgements without any facts to back them up.
My fellow democrats are really giving me pause this election cycle.
Lets wait to get the facts and then proceed to make the appropriate judgements and win the White House with integrity. Those who rush to udgement gain no respect. Partisanship blinds them.
