To Cake or Not to Cake - The Hungry Bride (Slashfood)
Apr 30th 2009 3:10PM We too had different cakes as centerpieces on the tables, which allowed us to have a cake to please everyone, they were beautiful and absolutely encouraged mingling. We did have a pretty small gathering, so the 6 8-inch cakes we ordered were more than enough.

One Delicious Vegan Caesar Dressing Recipe (Slashfood)
Jan 22nd 2009 3:16PM Its not vegan but when we make ceasar, instead of mayo we just mix in a spoon or two of plain yogurt. We use the plain yog instead of mayo in things like egg or tuna salad too.

Do you write notes in your cookbook margins? (Slashfood)
Oct 22nd 2008 5:18PM We do write notes in the cookbooks, put good recipes printed from the internet into the Joy of cooking (in the appropriate section) because the Joy is usually the first resource consulted if we say hmm...it would be cool to try X. We discuss keeping a kitchen log for those experimental nights or serendipitous discoveries, but haven't quite gotten around to it yet.
My dad wrote in his cookbooks too, helping us to bypass an yummy sounding something, a few years after he died. "Weird" was all it said, but that was enough. Thanks Dad -
Chipotle's calorie counts confuse consumers (Slashfood)
Apr 22nd 2008 3:20PM Bottom line: Chipotle's (McDonalds) is not interested in helping anyone lose weight. If calorie counting is the goal, don't eat there.

Soy Slim Jim, anyone? (Slashfood)
Apr 14th 2008 5:18PM A girlfriend gave me a couple, saying that she and her husband go through so many she has to buy a big box of them. They look juicy in the packaging which kinda grossed me out, but ultimately I could not get past the faux smoked flavor and gummy/chewiness. I took one bite, chewed for about 5 seconds and then spit it out. Tossed the rest. Hubs is vegetarian and im omniverous, but we dont do the fake meat thing. Bottom line? I thought they were disgusting.

Have a grilled cheese sandwich today (Slashfood)
Apr 12th 2008 6:10PM Had one today in fact! Ezekiel bread, real butter, sharp cheddar cheese, and bread and butter pickles heated in the cast iron skillet to perfection. Olives, Beaver mustard, and switching up the cheeses and breads are frequent substitutions.

A birthday cake recipe that's a keeper (Slashfood)
Feb 11th 2008 5:43PM Did you have any issues with it rising or being tough like some of the comments on the linked site? I am in love with my new Williams-Sonoma gold coat 8" pans, and will take any excuse to bake. Thanks for the link!

A world of sugar beyond white, brown and powdered (Slashfood)
Jan 23rd 2008 10:41PM We use succanat pretty frequently in baked goods, oatmeal etc. We use it in refrigerator pickles when we know its just going to be for common use, but if we are having company or something we switch back to white sugar as the succanat is darker and makes the brine dark. We even have a cat who's third name is succanat because when she wants to, she can be a real sweetiehead. (her full name is Zorra Butthead Succanat, so you can imagine the personality that told us this was her name!)
