What's the Best Pizza Value: Frozen, Homemade or Pizzeria? (Slashfood)
Feb 9th 2011 4:40PM There should be a law prohibiting chains like Papa Johns and Domino's and any frozen product at all, from calling their product "pizza." They are to pizza what "cheese food" is to cheese. It is a distortion of the truth to call what these chains sell "pizza." My opinion and my opinion only, but I'd sure as hell like to see it become law, in order to protect the consumer.

Vermont vs New Log Cabin "Syrup" (Slashfood)
Sep 11th 2010 4:19PM KT is right on. Its a huge undertaking to make maple syrup and hard work to boot. Good maple syrup is worth every penny and if finances suggest that I cant afford it this time around, I don't settle for crap products like Log Cabin or Aunt Jemima. One other point for those who don't know....there is more than one classification of maple syrup. Advertising traps us into believing t "grade A" is the best and "grade B" an inferior product. Nuh-uh. I love Grade B. Its flavor is far more pronounced and maple tasting. Oh...grade A is more delicate and lighter tasting, but when I want to that exquisite combination of bacon and maple syrup, its only Grade B for me. Give me that POW you get with Grade B and leave the Grade A for the dilettantes who don't know any better and wouldn't appreciate being schooled anyway. Its hard to find the Grade B in stores outside Vermont and New Hampshire, though. I think they like to keep all the good stuff for themselves. Forget finding it in the mountains here in Western North Carolina.

For Jamie Oliver, the Revolution Continues (Slashfood)
Sep 5th 2010 7:30PM And Mr Oliver is clearly getting under Ramsey's skin. Not long ago, I saw Chef Ramsey being asked when was the last time he had been served a truly bad meal meal in a restaurant. "The last time I dined at Jamie Oliver's restaurant" he answered. Ah, had he only been with me the last time I dined at one of Gordon's places...he would have had the ignominy of being served a meal which should not have been paid for. Nor even served on an airline. Not even a domestic, short haul, regional carrier. Not even in the terminal. Hell, not even in Jamie Oliver's place, Gordon.

Washing Raw Chicken Increases Food Poisoning Risk (Slashfood)
Jul 26th 2010 4:57PM All those writing here who insist that they have never, in forty years or whatever, made anyone ill, need to add one thing to that statement..."that I know of." Cause you have. It just wasn't a severe case or associated with what you tell everyone, is a spotless, faultless kitchen. Believing it can't happen in your kitchen, is a recipe for disaster.

Major-League Parks Offer Major-League Eats (Slashfood)
Jul 22nd 2010 11:28AM Sounds to me like a lot of you are getting awfully neurotic, worrying that somebody might tell you what to eat or what not to eat. As important as nutritionists are and as successful as they have been in getting out their message, I'd wager not one of you has been denied a calorie of fast food, sugar, cream or fat. But there are those who have learned to eat more healthfully, and are living healthier, happier and lives, because somebody used their head and listened to a valuable message. Y'all may live nice long healthy lives continuing to eat whatever you want, whenever you want, but there are tens of thousands alive today who would not be, were it not for this message. Why does this scare you so much? Y'all soooo afraid of a smart person, with a degree saying "ya know, you might not want to go back for thirds on that fried Twinkie."

Starbucks Hits 10 Million Fans on Facebook (Slashfood)
Jul 18th 2010 8:28AM There is a reason Starbucks is roasted so dark. By doing so, you flatten out the flavor characteristics and mask the coffee"s deficiencies. This is one way they have been able to sell unlimited amounts of "limited availability" varietals. And it is also the reason those in the industry refer to Starbucks as Charbucks. Frankly, I owe them a debt of gratitude as I had a very successful specialty store before they had ever left the Norhwest. When they opened up 2 blocks from me, they brought huge numbers of people to the area, most of whom had never tried us, or even heard of us. My business dropped off initially, as I expected and then rose 15% over prior year levels. And then Peetes opened up between us both. Pretty funny, but everyone did well and I sold for far more than I could have before either one of them showed up, so thanks Starbucks! Char away!!

The Silly Secret about Chicken McNuggets (Slashfood)
Jun 30th 2010 1:19PM Jennifer, you do those of us who might agree with you a great disservice by the tone of your post. Frankly, from the looks of it, all Jules was doing was clarifying facts, not defending the use of these substances. Your post comes across as yelling, and when people are yelling, it is impossible for them to hear anything at all, even the truth. Apart from considering us fat, Europeans also think we are loud, shrill, undereducated louts. They say too many of us cannot debate even reasonably well because we think if we just talk louder than the other person, we're right.. You seem to give their opinion of us a lot of credit, and your bombastic post might go a long way towards making their point. about us as unthinking "might makes right" type people.

Subway Sandwich: Lettuce, Tomato, High-Fructose Corn Syrup? (Slashfood)
Jun 22nd 2010 7:08PM No, it won't kill you, but no one is claiming it will and clearly you are not able to dispute the facts. The point is, Subway, (you, in some measure, I presume), touts itself as a healthful alternative, without acknowledging the less than healthful aspects of its highly processed food. But seriously, people are going to eat what they're going to eat. Why not admit, yeah, we put some crap that's bad for you in it, too? If people want to waste money on a sandwich they can make for themselves at home, with much better ingredients and for a lot less money, telling them about the poisons in your food won't stop them.

Food Network Sets Sail (Slashfood)
Jun 13th 2010 11:09AM Love to cook, trained to cook, read and learn all i can about it. The thought of being trapped on a boat with all these people who need to be onstage and with those who worship them, is a pretty scary thought. Not for me, at any price.
