RIP, CompUSA: 1984 - 2008 (Engadget)

Dec 9th 2007 1:54AM I didn't know CompUSA had such bad service around the rest of the country but here in McAllen, TX (right across from Mexico, 50 miles from Brownsville) CompUSA is/was great. They came in to town a few years ago and were making a killing. Our staff was very knowledgeable and their selection was much better than Best Buy or Circuit City (our town has both). Since the nearest MicroCenter or Fry's is over 300 miles away, it became the best place for any tech person in the region to shop (including those from across the border).

How do I know our store was very successful? The turnover was low (I got to know some of the staff, they enjoyed their jobs) and over the years they have been here, the store always had a number of customers, and they expanded the store 3 times. What started as a single corner of a mini-mall expanded to the backside and eventually took over the entire side of the mini-mall. It's sad really since they just completed the latest expansion less than a month ago (again doubling their floor space and capacity).

I will miss them.
Food Porn: The Bulgogi Burger (Slashfood)

Jun 8th 2006 12:48PM If you're ever in Austin, TX try "Burger Tex" on Guadalupe Street just a block North of the University of Texas campus. They're famous for their bulgogi burger.

I'm no expert on Korean food but I do know it's pretty darn tasty.
