Flashback to the Seventies: Pickled Beet Dip (Slashfood)
May 29th 2009 3:41PM Okay so this one grabbed me and I just made it with minor adjustments -- it's got that Peptobismol color for sure, but for a Beet Queen like me (there are 40+ beet recipes on my food blog A Veggie Venture), it's a winner. I'll be taking it to a swim and barbecue party on Sunday, we'll see how others react! Thanks for the quick inspiration!

8 steps to a more professional Blogspot blog (Download Squad)
Mar 26th 2008 11:07AM I have two sites still using Blogger as the publishing platform -- see http://kitchenparade.com and http://kitchen-parade-veggieventure.blogspot.com/ -- and neither of them "look" like Blogger sites but yet I still get all the many conveniences of Blogger. I use Wordpress for a client site and it's so obtuse -- not easy at all, especially on under the covers.
And -- Blogger requires the navigation bar on top for sites still using blogspot domains. Removing it violates the user agreement.
And -- Blogger also publishes sites to their own domains at no charge. It's relatively new (a year) and not many people seem to know about it, including sites like this that write with authority and yet appear to not know the full story. -

The best restaurant you ate at last year (Slashfood)
Jan 2nd 2007 9:37AM There's a great little place in Los Angeles called the Newsroom -- "very LA" is the way a new friend describes its food, including the grilled artichokes and smoked tofu in udon noodles I enjoyed recently. Just excellent!

How to make better brussel sprouts (Slashfood)
Dec 30th 2006 11:14AM For Christmas dinner, two BS newbies and three BS don't-like-em's went back for seconds! I quick-cooked small quartered fresh BS in butter til just starting to caramalize, then braised in cream for 30 minutes or so. Gorgeous.
And FWIW, I think that under-cooked BS are just as much to blame as over-cooked for people not liking them. I have great luck with cooking them well past al dente. -
Sticky silicone? (Slashfood)
Nov 5th 2006 2:50PM The silicone pans were short-lived at my house, the stickiness issue, plus they didn't come clean well in the dishwasher. I also found them hard to store. There do seem to be a lot of knock-offs in the silicone world, maybe it's that? My set came (er) from Wal*Mart.

New editor of the NYT dining section (Slashfood)
Sep 16th 2006 8:37AM So true! When I let my everyday subscription to the NYT lapse for Sunday-only, I'd still pick up a copy of the Wednesday edition. But I stopped a few months ago: there was just nothing that interested me. Go, Pete!

Food Porn: Gooseberry Tart (Slashfood)
Aug 9th 2006 12:49PM The first trick for anything gooseberry is pronunciation: as in goozberry, rhymes with ooze.
