California May Ban Plastic Shopping Bags (Slashfood)
Jun 9th 2010 12:06PM I often re-use the thin plastic bags from shopping for various things such as scooping my cat's litter box. If stores are prevented from using these, then I will have to purchase and use much thicker commercial garbage bags. Which will result in more plastic in the land fills. When Whole Foods stopped offering plastic bags as an option, then I stopped shopping there.

A Riotous, Artery-Clogging, Bacon Explosion (Slashfood)
Jan 12th 2009 3:10AM Sounds good, but I think I will try it using meatloaf mix instead of sausage inside.

The 5 Weirdest Things in my Parents' Cupboards (Slashfood)
Nov 29th 2008 2:50AM Those things don't seem so odd to me. I found old "powdered Alum" in my mom's spice cabinet. 10 points to anyone who knows what she used to use that for.

How important is it to preheat your oven? (Slashfood)
Oct 22nd 2008 5:15AM I think the "preheated oven" is more about standardizing the cooking time, rather than changing the outcome of what you make. Some ovens take longer to get up to temperature than others. If your oven takes an extra long time to get up to temperature, then your baking time might need to increase if you put it in cold. Most people don't want to see a recipe that says "Remove from oven when done." :P

Searching for favorite fall soups (Slashfood)
Sep 30th 2008 3:46AM I often make Split-pea soup with Ham, Carrots, and Chorizo. Or a red curry chicken (very fast to make), just put curry paste, and chicken broth in a big soup pot, add cooked diced chicken, onions, and chickpeas. Bring to a boil, then add cooked (so it doesn't steal water from your soup) lentils or rice. Remove from heat, and stir in some coconut milk. Sometimes I'll throw in some chopped water chestnuts, or pineapple, or carrots.

Taste Test: Thomas Kemper's new cane sugar sodas (Slashfood)
May 25th 2008 5:17AM I used to love Vernors growing up and tried it again recently, only to be disappointed. It was sickeningly sweet and not like I remembered. Now that you say that they changed from sugar to HFCS it makes sense and saddens me.
I also want to second the nomination for Reed's for spicy ginger ale. -
Taste Test: Thomas Kemper's new cane sugar sodas (Slashfood)
May 23rd 2008 6:28AM If you want to trwat yourself, try Jones Soda Company. There is a reason why they are the only Soda company to break into the Coke/Pepsi mega markets in professional sports stadiums (No coke, no Pepsi at Seattle Seahawks games). Not only do they have the standard root beer, orange creme, vanilla creme, cherry, lemon-lime, and grape, but they also have odd flavors like FuFu berry, Blue Bubble gum, green apple and crushed melon.
Their site is: jonessoda.com

Miss Vickie's Chips: 1 country onion + 3 cheeses = wow! (Slashfood)
May 19th 2008 5:08AM I prefer Kettle chips. They come in a bunch of unusal flavors as well. My two favorites are cheddar beer and spicy thai.

Totino's, Jeno's frozen pizzas recalled (Slashfood)
Nov 2nd 2007 7:52AM Aren't those pizzas cooked in your oven at like 425 F? I would think that would kill the e-coli.

Recipe: Sarah's Simple Tzatziki (Slashfood)
Jul 25th 2007 2:54AM If you don't like the dill that is normally in it, then try a little fresh mint instead.
