It's that time of year again, the 40-day Christian season of Lent, a time when fast food restaurants ramp up their seafood menu selections to capitalize on religious dogma -- hell, even KFC plays up their Fish Snacker. The rules of the season mandate that no meat is to be eaten on Fridays -- vegetarians need not change their eating habits -- but to the observant carnivorous fast foodie, this usually means replacing those burgers and fries with fish and chips. Wendy's heeds this call, and has jumped back on the bandwagon this year, offering a Premium Fish Fillet sandwich to fill this religious niche. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: Wendy's Premium Fish Fillet is 100% North Pacific cod breaded with panko crumbs, served in a bun with a leaf of lettuce and tartar sauce (500 calories). A slice of American cheese is optional (for an additional 40 calories).

The Price: $3.99 for the sandwich, plus an extra 30 cents if you want cheese. Add their natural-cut fries to make it a "fish 'n chips" combo with a drink for $5.99. (Prices may vary at participating locations.)
Continue reading Wendy's Menu: Premium Fish Fillet Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. Nathan's and Wienerschnitzel have dominated the fast food chain hot dog arena for years, but now Sonic, America's Drive-In, has stepped up their game with the introduction of four new premium hot dogs -- and you don't even have to leave your car for them. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: The frankfurters in Sonic's new lineup all start with a grilled, all-beef hot dog inside a "soft, warm bakery bun," and are each differentiated by their fixings: the All-American Dog has ketchup, mustard, relish, and chopped raw onions (386 calories); the Chili Cheese Coney is topped with chili and shredded cheddar cheese (420 calories); the New York Dog has spicy mustard, grilled onions, and sauerkraut (352 calories); and the Chicago Dog is topped with a pickle spear, relish, tomatoes, hot peppers, chopped raw onions, celery salt, and mustard, with poppy seeds on the bun (435 calories).

The Price: Each hot dog sells for the introductory price of $1.99, at participating locations.
Now that folks at Domino's Pizza are finished revamping their pizza recipe, they've turned their attention to their chicken offerings, introducing new Boneless Chicken (basically nuggets), and a reboot of their Chicken Wings. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: Domino's new Boneless Chicken is "lightly breaded with savory herbs, made with 100% white breast meat." The revamped wings are "now tastier than ever. Sauced with your choice of Hot, New Sweet Mango Habanero or BBQ Sauce." The Boneless Chicken can be "customized" with those same three sauces for dipping, in addition to the standards, Ranch or Blue Cheese dressing.

The Price: Boneless Chicken comes in 8-, 14-, or 40-piece combos, at $6.99 (410 calories), $10.99 (710 calories), or $29.99 (2030 calories), respectively. The new wings also come in eight, fourteen, or forty, for the same prices. (580-680 calories, 1010-1200 calories, 2890-3420 calories, respectively.)
Continue reading Domino's Pizza: New Chicken Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. Arby's is known for their roast beef sandwiches, and now, like other chains before them, they are jumping on the Angus beef bandwagon -- that breed of cattle whose name has become associated with leaner, tastier, and higher-quality meat. This is good news for the carnivores out there, especially since the Angus beef is sliced and piled into a sandwich with bacon and three types of cheese. Here's how Arby's new Angus Three Cheese & Bacon sandwich rates:

The Claims: The Angus Three Cheese & Bacon sandwich contains USDA Choice Black Angus beef, slow-roasted with a rub of garlic and onions, sliced fresh in the store, and piled onto an Italian roll. The roast beef is draped with slices of Swiss cheese, and topped with shredded cheddar, a Parmesan peppercorn ranch sauce, and thick-cut, pepper-spiced bacon. (660 calories sans condiments)

The Price: $4.99.
Continue reading Arby's Menu: Angus Three Cheese & Bacon Sandwich Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. In our search for the best of the best of fast-casual restaurant menus, we've sampled Applebee's Appetizers and Outback Steakhouse Favorites. We've given you our picks for TGI Friday's Sizzling Skillets, and Red Lobster Shrimp. Now we figured it was time to put some all-American burgers to the test, courtesy of Ruby Tuesday.

Menu Overview
We dug into all six of Ruby Tuesday's handcrafted premium beef burgers (we're saving the Veggie, Turkey, and Crab premium burgers for another taste test). Triple Prime burgers are a blend of ground tenderloin, sirloin, and ribeye, and are offered plain, with Cheddar cheese, and with Cheddar and applewood-smoked bacon. We also test-drove the Boston Blue (with blue cheese, onion rings, and barbecue sauce), the Smokehouse Burger (Cheddar, bacon, onion rings, and barbecue sauce), and the Alpine Swiss (with Swiss cheese and baby portabello mushrooms). All burgers come with lettuce, tomato, and garlic-mayo toppings, are served on a potato bun, and with a side of pleasantly crisp and well-salted "endless fries." Yes, spud lovers, it's fries till you pull the trigger. (We ordered all burgers cooked to medium doneness.)

See our winner, runner-up, and loser after the jump.
Continue reading Ruby Tuesday Menu: Best Premium Burgers

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ben & Jerry's 'Late Night Snack' Ice Cream Reviewed

Filed under: Taste Test, New Products, Chain Stores / Restaurants

The battle for late-night supremacy now moves to the ice-cream aisle. On the heels of Stephen Colbert's "AmeriCone Dream" comes a new late-night funnyman-inspired ice cream flavor from Ben & Jerry's. That's right; in conjunction with the two-year anniversary of SNL alum Jimmy Fallon taking over Conan O'Brien's NBC post at Late Night, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield have created "Late Night Snack," a premium ice cream complete with Fallon's mug on the lid. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: Ben & Jerry's Late Night Snack is vanilla bean ice cream with a salty caramel swirl and fudge-covered potato chip clusters.
Continue reading Ben & Jerry's 'Late Night Snack' Ice Cream Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. Our fast-casual, best of the menu culinary trek continues: First it was Applebee's for appetizers, then Outback Steakhouse for Outback Favorites, then TGI Friday's for Sizzling Skillets. Our most recent adventure was at Red Lobster, to find out which was their best shrimp dish.

Menu Overview: There are 5 main courses in the "Shrimp" section, including Walt's Favorite Shrimp (breaded butterflied shrimp), Crunchy Popcorn Shrimp (fried breaded bite-size shrimp), Shrimp Linguine Alfredo (shrimp in garlic-parmesan cream sauce served over linguine), Parrot Isle Jumbo Coconut Shrimp (fried coconut-breaded butterflied shrimp with a "piña colada" sauce) and Shrimp Your Way (you choose a 2- or 3-item combination plate -- shrimp scampi available in this dish).
We've been taste-testing chocolates for quite some time (a tough job, but someone has to do it), and several years ago, we put Valentine's Day boxed chocolates to a test for the best. But since then, so much has changed -- there are new chocolatiers, and recent chocolate trends have led to new chocolate combinations. We knew it was time to update our gallery.

After tasting more than 45 different boxes, we've created six categories: Best box for kids, best drug-store box, best box for men, best box for caramel lovers, most beautiful creations and overall best box.

After the jump, click through our gallery of best boxed chocolates and see which chocolates won our hearts (and will win yours).
Continue reading Best Valentine's Day Chocolates

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wendy's Asiago Ranch Chicken Club Reviewed

Filed under: Taste Test, Fast Food

Wendy's has quite a reputation to maintain when it announces a new menu item. They have to not only live up to their current marketing slogan, "You know when it's real," by using the freshest ingredients that a national mega-chain can be supplied, but they must also strive to sustain their "recipe of quality" -- a formula which has earned them top honors in Zagat's Fast Food Survey for the past two years. Enter the new Asiago Ranch Chicken Club, the self-proclaimed "bold new take on chicken that's anything but boring." Here's how it rates:

The Claims: The Asiago Ranch Chicken Club sandwich comes in three variations of chicken -- Grilled, Homestyle, or Spicy - each topped with strips of applewood-smoked bacon, a slice of Asiago cheese, ranch dressing, lettuce, and sliced tomatoes. (470-660 calories, depending on the style of chicken)

The Price: $5.19 each. (Manhattan, NY; prices may vary depending on location.)
Continue reading Wendy's Asiago Ranch Chicken Club Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. Friday's Sizzling Dishes.

Menu Overview: All of these "sizzling" dishes come on blazing hot cast-iron skillets. (And yes, they sizzle.) Three of them have melted cheese at the base of the dish, topped with chicken or a combo of chicken and shrimp and then there are two fajitas dishes. The Sizzling Chicken and Cheese plate was "not nearly gooey enough for someone looking for something really cheesy." While the chicken was cooked well, the "peppers and onions that came with the dish were too salty." The Steak Fajitas were bland and under-seasoned -- where's the heat? Plus, the steak was too tough.
A few weeks ago, the nation found out about a California class-action lawsuit against Taco Bell, in which it was alleged that the Mexican-inspired fast food empire was serving a "meat mixture" containing less than 35 percent meat. In response, Taco Bell fought back with a very public statement (and full-page ads). Additionally, they rolled out the Quad Steak Burrito (and Quad Steak Quesadilla) to showcase the fact that they do, in fact, serve real USDA Select beef. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: The Quad Steak Burrito is a burrito with four times the amount of steak pieces than the Steak Burrito Supreme, all wrapped in a flour tortilla filled with seasoned rice, "fire-roasted" salsa, reduced-fat sour cream and cheddar cheese. Its quesadilla counterpart has the same ingredients -- with four times the amount of beef than a Steak Quesadilla -- although it's flatter and not as filling as the burrito. (Both contain 610-660 calories, according to a menu poster.)
Continue reading Taco Bell's Quad Steak Burrito and Quesadilla Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. Years ago, the McDonald's Corporation was a financial backer for the fast-food chain Chipotle, but the two parted ways in part because the Mexican grill's founder, Steve Ells, decided to pursue a philosophy of "Food with Integrity." Nowadays, the Golden Arches has a new association with the word "chipotle," this time as an ingredient in the barbecue sauce for the latest versions of their Angus Third Pounders and Snack Wraps. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: The Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon & Cheese Third Pounder is a 1/3 pound Angus beef patty, topped with American cheese, bacon, pickles, red onions and chipotle BBQ sauce, all served on sesame-seed bun. The Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon & Cheese Snack Wrap is half of an Angus patty (a Sixth Pounder), with all the same toppings, wrapped in a tortilla. (800 and 400 calories, respectively).

The Price: $4.09 for the burger, $1.99 for the wrap (Manhattan, NY; prices may vary depending on location).
Continue reading McDonald's Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon & Cheese Burger and Snack Wrap Review

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R.
In one of Slashfood's biggest taste tests to date, we dive into the world of supermarket pretzels -- over 110 bags in all. You didn't realize there were that many varieties of pretzels? Neither did we. So to keep things simple, we decided to break up the taste test into 12 categories: sticks, extra-dark, honey wheat, multigrain, flavored, crisps, old fashioned, gluten-free, unsalted, rods, sourdough and traditional.

It didn't take long to conclude that pretzels are a very personal thing. Everyone has a favorite variety, shape and flavor -- and people like wildly different amounts of salt. So to level out the playing field, we invited employees from all over AOL to join in and vote for their favorites.

After the jump, find out how we voted and flip through our gallery to find out our favorites, as well as the brands we'd skip.
Continue reading Best Pretzels: Over 100 Bags Tested

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Schwan's Introduces New Scotto Frozen Meals

With the Manhattan gripped by frigid temps, it seemed like an appropriate day to sample Fresco by Scotto's new frozen dishes for Midwest delivery giant Schwan's.

Back in 2009, Schwan's approached the telegenic cooking family about replicating dishes from their Midtown eatery for its customers. "So the conversation starts, 'We could really use a Fresco in Minnesota.' And we're like, no way, too cold for us," Elaina Scotto explained, perhaps eating her words a bit today. "So they said, 'What about doing your great dishes, in a frozen food format, and we can ship it anywhere in the United States?'"

Doughnut lovers, rejoice: Dunkin' Donuts is ringing in the month of love with three new chocolate doughnuts. Yes, you're thinking, "I've had chocolate doughnuts at Dunkin' before, what's the big deal?" Here's the twist -- these are chocolate yeast donuts. And that's a big deal in the doughnut world -- the chain is the first in the country to offer them.

Meet your new doughnuts, released today as part of the chain's "Chocolate Lovers Month":

Cocoa Confetti: a chocolate yeast ring, topped with chocolate icing and rainbow sprinkles.

Reverse Boston Kreme: a chocolate yeast shell filled with chocolate Bavarian Kreme and topped with vanilla icing.

Cocoa Kreme Puff: a sugared chocolate yeast shell filled with vanilla butter cream.

We were lucky enough to get ahold of the new treats. Forget brownie sundaes, molten chocolate cakes and designer cupcakes. The dessert world has a new trend: sweets that resemble appetizers. T.G.I. Friday's new dessert nachos are a prime example -- with a treat like this, no one needs to worry about dry cakes and deflating souffles. Here, the sweet ingredients are all piled together, and voilà. If nothing else, it's an easy way to get the entire table to join in on the fun (this dessert is definitely meant to be shared).
The Claim: The "sizzling" ice cream nachos consist of wonton crisps piled high with pineapple, mango and strawberries, then topped with two generous scoops of vanilla ice cream and a heavy drizzle of caramel sauce.
Continue reading T.G.I. First it was the best Applebee's appetizers, now we head Down Under to the popular steak chain, Outback Steakhouse. With so many entrees on offer, we decided to start with the restaurant's tried-and-true classics: Outback Favorites.

Menu Overview: There are seven main courses in the "Favorites" section, including Baby Back Ribs, which had a great crust, but the meat was a little fatty. "Would have loved them with more sauce," one taster said. Next, we sampled the Grilled Chicken on the Barbie (the chicken was dry and lacked seasoning), the pleasantly spicy No Rules Parmesan Pasta (but where was the Parmesan?) and the Sweet Glazed Pork Tenderloin, a dish that prompted one taster to suggest it "could have been cardboard" underneath the heaping pile of overly-sweet sauce.
Super Bowl Sunday marks one of the greasiest days of the year -- between pigs-in-a-blanket, buffalo wings and chili-cheese nachos -- everyone indulges in party food. Whether you're hosting a party yourself or you've offered to bring snacks along, you want to make sure you're serving the best. Over the past couple of years, we've given you the Best Frozen Buffalo Wings, the Best Chips and Salsa and, more recently, we've taste-tested the Best Potato Chips.

After the jump, we've simplified your search. In one gallery, we showcase the best chips, salsa, tortilla chips, margarita mix, boxed wine and buffalo wings to help you score a touchdown during the big game.
Continue reading Best Super Bowl Snacks & Drinks

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pizza Hut's Big Dipper Reviewed

You might have noticed that most "new" items at fast-food chains are just rearrangements of the ingredients found in their usual fare, and Pizza Hut is no stranger to this concept. Their latest offering is the Big Dipper -- made from their staple ingredients of crust, tomato sauce, cheese, and toppings. It's the presentation that's new: This pie is sliced to share three or four ways on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Claim: The Big Dipper is a rectangular pizza (about 24"x9"), served with one or more toppings. It is cut into 24 pieces, each about 2" x 4.5", and served with four 3-oz cups of marinara sauce, presumably so that four individuals can have his/her own.
