Super Bowl Week: Sweet Potato Pecan Puffs

These are a deliciously light mix of savory and sweet, and they're healthy, so you'll still respect yourself the next morning, unlike the guy next to you who just downed a bag of Cheez Doodles and chased it with a pint of beer.

Sweet Potato Pecan Puffs

Serves 4-6
From: V Cuisine: The Art of New Vegan Cooking

You'll need:
2 medium sweet potatoes, finely chopped
6 cloves garlic, chopped
1 cup unsweetened soy milk (feel free to use regular milk instead)
1 Tbsp. olive oil
2 cups toasted and chopped pecans
2 scallions, finely chopped
1 cup parsley, finely chopped
A few sprigs of basil and sage, finely chopped
Salt and pepper
Pinch nutmeg (optional)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Bring the sweet potatoes and garlic in a pot and cover with water. Cook until the taters are fork-tender.
Mash the potatoes and add the rest of the ingredients, saving out about half the pecans. Put spoonfuls of the mixture onto a parchment-covered baking sheet, and press remaining pecans on top.

Bake for about 25 minutes.

Slashfood Bowl: Grill with the New England Patriots

new england patriots grilling tools
Grilling is going to be an option this weekend in a lot of households that are hosting Super Bowl parties. Sure you can do burgers in a frying pan and hot dogs (God forbid) boiled on the stove top, but why? Wouldn't you want to bundle up in four layers of wool and goose down, step out on the patio in sub-freezing weather, scrape the ice and snow from the windshield of your Weber, and grill your food? Especially with a shiny set of New England Patriots grilling tools!

The Siskiyou New England Patriots 8-piece Barbecue Tool Set comes with a spatula with knife edge, a grill fork, tongs, a basting brush and 4 skewers. The best part, of course, is the aluminum carrying case for your precious tools that's emblazoned with the Patriots logo.

Available from the CBS Sports store for $69.99.

Super Bowl Week: Bell Pepper and Goat Cheese Crostini

At a Super Bowl Party filled with Velveeta-laden spreads and greasy potato chips, crostini can be a welcome alternative. This recipe is one of my favorites: it pairs creamy goat cheese, tart red peppers and a toasty baguette for a refreshing break from the norm.

Slashfood Bowl: Domestic divas love the Patriots!

elizabeth scokin apron - new england patriotsGranted, you probably want to be completely done with all the food preparation just as your guests arrive to your house for your Hall of Fame-worthy Super Bowl party, but realistically, will you ever really step out of the kitchen, even if you've hired a caterer?

Whether you do or not, you might want to protect that team jersey you're wearing for the game day party with an apron, and luckily, Elizabeth Scokin Productions has created an apron specifically for the Super Bowl festivities. Now I know that this might be getting a little bit too Sandra Lee (who matches her barettes to her baby t-shirt to her apron to her stand mixer), but the New England Patriots apron is navy blue with matching sash and has red and white trim, just like the team's colors. Of course, at $100 a pop for these aprons, you may not want to actually wear it while you're cooking; throw it on as your "party outfit" just before your guests get there!

P.S. Let's not tell Marisa, who's supporting New York, that they also make a Giants apron!

Slashfood Bowl: Support your team with Giants or Patriots snack helmets

wincraft football team snack helmets
I have to admit that when I throw a Super Bowl party, I don't usually serve foods on Super Bowl or football-themed plates and platters. It's usually enough for me to have the game on in the background and let the food just speak for itself. However, because we happen to be hosting the Slashfood Bowl this week, I thought it would be nice to show off Wincraft's Snack Helmets that come in the opposing teams' helmets. Since I play fairly, I'm representing Marisa's New York Giants in addition to the Patriots. (I didn't really care either way for anyone who cares - my heart belongs to the Colts).

The helmets hold snacks on top and in a small section near the face mask. Both are available on Amazon.com for about $45 (depending on the seller).

Super Bowl Week: Peanut Chili Dip and Pita Crisps

If you're tired of the typical dips (and we don't mean that weirdo who chatted you up at the bar last night), check out a lighter, spicier alternative: peanut chili dip from The 15-Minute Gourmet: Vegetarian, by Paulette Mitchell.

Peanut Chili Dip
Makes: 2/3 cup

You will need: 1/3 cup organic or natural peanut butter, smooth or crunchy
3 Tbsp. water
2 Tbsp. soy sauce
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
2 tsp. honey
1 tsp. minced garlic
1 tsp. chili powder
Optional dash of cayenne

Combine pb and water in a bowl, stir to make a paste. Stir in remaining ingredients and serve. You can keep this baby in the fridge until you're ready to eat - it's great hot or cold.

And don't forget dippers - forgo boring tortilla chips for homemade pita crisps.

Slashfood Bowl: New York and New England face off

header from super bowl website
This Sunday, fans from across the country will be glued to their televisions as the New York Giants and the New England Patriots face off in the Super Bowl. Here at Slashfood, we are approaching the Super Bowl from the snack table, facing off the tastes and treats from New York and New England. I'll be representing New York (it's particularly appropriate, since I'm spending the latter half of the week in Brooklyn) and our own Sarah J. Gim (a two-time veteran of the Slashfood Bowl) will be writing and eating on behalf of New England.

Will New York, with its mile-high cheesecake, chewy bagels and black and white cookies reign supreme? Or will New England trounce the Big Apple with creamy clam chowder, Boston Brown Bread and dark, molasses cookies? In the spirit of the Iron Chef, let the Bowl begin!
