Is it time for Paula Deen to lay off the fried butter? The Daily Mail has picked up on a National Enquirer report that Paula Deen was diagnosed with diabetes several years ago, yet still "continues to tout exactly the type of butter or sugar rich high-fat recipes that bring on diabetes."

A friend of Deen's told the Enquirer, "Ironically, the very thing that made her rich and famous turned her into a poster child for what could happen if you follow in her footsteps." But source says that Deen has modified her diet and eating habits, which has supposedly resulted in weight loss as well.

Interestingly enough, on PaulaDeen.com, there is a discussion board thread relating to diabetic-friendly Paula Deen recipes. Our guess? They're giving Deen's Donut Bread Pudding a wide berth. (The recipe calls for two cans of sugary fruit cocktail, a can of sweetened condensed milk, an entire stick of butter, a whole pound of powdered sugar and -- ready? -- 24 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Guy Fieri Joins Lawmakers to Promote Family Dinners

Yes, his overbearing manner and spiked blond hair can rub people the wrong way, but at his core, Guy Fieri seems like a pretty decent guy. Recently, the host of Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" used his clout to try to convince the California legislature to adopt a resolution urging the families to meet and cook weekly meals together every Sunday, reports the Associated Press.

Fieri, who helped pass a 2008 initiative to make the second Saturday in May "Cook With Your Kids Day" says he thinks cooking at home builds healthy habits.

"Let them stand there and work the saute pan, let them do the plate up, let them deliver it to the family," Fieri told the lawmakers. "Start them off slow. Educate them as you go."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The 7 Biggest Celebrity Fad Diets

Filed under: On the Blogs, Celebrities

We all know the "secret" to losing weight: Eat less and exercise more. But where's the fun in that? Celebs have been trying out zany alternatives to the sensible path to fitness for years, and The Daily Meal has a list of seven of the weirdest ways high-profile stars have tried to drop pounds. The Babyfood Diet is just sort of silly (though eating green-hued unseasoned purées would make anyone lose their appetite) but it was good enough for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Brooke Shields preferred the Cabbage Soup Diet, while Kim Kardashian opted for the sounds-better-than-it-tastes Cookie Diet.

Want to see if you've tried the same fad diet as a celeb? Check out the full list at The Daily Meal.
If you've ever listened to the lyrics of Bon Jovi's 1986 signature anthem, "Livin' on a Prayer," you know Jon Bon Jovi sympathizes with those down on their luck. (Remember? Poor Tommy used to work on the docks, but union's been on strike...).

Now the singer, already well-known for his philanthropic works through his non-profit Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, plans to open a community restaurant in Red Bank, New Jersey. Soul Kitchen, which is slated to open this spring, isn't just any restaurant, though. The eatery will serve low-cost or no-cost meals to diners and ask they they volunteer at the restaurant in return. (If this model sounds familiar, it's because a similar restaurant exists in Denver.)

It's a feel-good model that works for everyone. And if the food's good, it might just start a trend.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Flavor Flav Ditches His Fried Chicken Restaurant

Just in case you've been dreaming about eating in a restaurant that was launched by the likes of reality star Heidi Montag, former prostitute Ashley Dupre and Real Housewife of New Jersey Danielle Staub, this is your lucky day. VH1 is launching a new 10-episode reality show this fall, aptly named Famous Food. The show's title is also the name of the to-be-launched Los Angeles restaurant in which the television stars will work with Mike Malin and Lonnie Moore of the Dolce Group (Ketchup, Angels & Kings, Geisha House and Dolce) to open the joint and undergo challenges "related to renovation, concept, marketing, menu, staffing and opening."

TV Squad explains: "At the end of the eight-week process, the celeb who Malin and Moore think worked the hardest will win a partnership stake in the restaurant, while the rest will go on to ... other things. (Probably more reality shows.)"

Other contestants include The Bachelor's Jake Pavelka, Three 6 Mafia members DJ Paul and Juicy J, and former Sopranos star Vincent Pastore.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Curtis Stone Addresses His Haters, Plans to Open LA Restaurant

Filed under: On the Blogs, Celebrities

YumSugar interviews omnipresent celebrity chef, "Top Chef Masters" host and "America's Next Best Restaurant" judge Curtis Stone and finds him "surprisingly grounded and impressively well-spoken." Stone has recently caught some flack for being more of a pretty face (those eyes!) than, well, a chef. Eater recently asked the question on everyone's mind, "Who the Hell is Curtis Stone Anyway?").

In the YumSugar interview, Stone admits that his detractors almost have a point. "If you're going to say you're a chef, you need to cook somewhere, which is why I'm opening a restaurant. I miss cooking in a restaurant, and that camaraderie, and that art of perfection that I was talking about."

Stone hopes his Los Angeles restaurant will be "a nice little place, where you can still cook for people the way you want to...I want it to be relaxed and special; I think 40 or 50 seats would see me out." Don't worry ladies, the man still has a few tricks up his sleeve (note: he is involved with the actress Lindsay Price). When asked what he wants to be remembered for, the cheeky Stone answered, "A few things spring to mind that I shouldn't say out loud."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Royal Wedding Menu Heavy on the Appetizers, Light on Everything Else

With 650 guests invited to celebrate Kate and Wills' big day, and the Buckingham Palace kitchens only equipped for formal dinner service for around 150, the menu for the Royal Wedding will not exactly be a five-course affair. In fact, it will consist of nothing more than a "modest spread of Champagne, wedding cake and two-bite appetizers, or canapes," reports the New York Times.

The 21-chef kitchen plans to make 10,000 appetizers, which comes to about 15 canapes per guest. Among them, mini Yorkshire puddings with roast beef and horseradish cream (above left, being prepared by sous chef Mark Stewart), and bubble-and-squeak confit with lamb shoulder (above right, being arranged by Royal Chef Mark Flanagan, Head of Kitchens at Buckingham Palace). Other house specialties include smoked salmon, herbed crèpes and Cornish pasties. The two-bite factor is aimed at convenience, "should a guest need to put one away in order to greet a passing dignitary."

In the evening after the wedding, Prince Charles is hosting a three-course dinner for 300 guests in Buckingham Palace catered by London restaurateur Anton Mosimann.

The rough ride continues in Food Revolution episode two: Jamie Oliver has opened one of his cooking centers in town (free for the locals) and humbly invites members of the Los Angeles United School District (LAUSD) -- which still won't let him into a single school -- to stop by. Blank stares say that's not happening. "I haven't even got a glimmer of hope," he says. "Which means, it's war."

In this war, Jamie's army might be confused with the Fruit-of-the-Loom brigade. Donning a tomato costume, Jamie enlists parent volunteers -- outfitted in banana, strawberry and carrot -- and roams the school-bound streets with free food, t-shirts (that read "Feed Me Better" and "Let Jamie In") and flyers to get parents to contact the LAUSD themselves. Then, natch, the community firestorm begins: "We're teaching our kids to be diabetic, when we train them to eat pizza," one mother in her strawberry war garb tells Jamie. And more than 745 parents send emails to the board, including a particularly powerful one: "I urge you to search your conscious. If you have nothing to hide, then let him in."

Suddenly, Jamie gets an email from a school that offers him a giant loophole. The West Adams Preparatory High School, under a special MLA partnership with LAUSD, has some freedom to build its own curriculum and function atypically -- but to a limit, Jamie finds. The school admits its staff is risking their jobs by letting Jamie in, and are aren't allowed to give him access to the cafeteria, but he is given a room to hold cooking classes. "We need him here," says Chief Executive Officer Mike McGalliod, who was impressed with the Revolution's first season.
Continue reading Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Recap: "I Found a Loophole!"

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dukan Diet Book, A Celeb Smash, Hits U.S. Stores Today

Filed under: Health & Medical, Celebrities

The Dukan Diet reportedly has Kate Middleton and J. Lo slenderizing. But is this high-protein, low-carb, four-phase diet really anything new? Calling Atkins and South Beach!

Now you can find out what all the hype is about. The English version of the decade-old French weight-loss bible The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever, by French physician Pierre Dukan, MD, hits stores today, April 19.

Our friends over at Everyday Health asked nutritionist Kelly MacDonald, RD, to review the Dukan Diet, and lay out the pros and cons. Among them: "Though you may see rapid initial weight loss, it will mostly be from water and, later, from muscle mass. You'll also likely experience fatigue, moodiness, and other symptoms because the diet is so severely lacking in carbohydrates."
Ever wondered what chefs and food critics eat when they're behind closed doors? Guess what? It ain't foie gras. Our friends over at The Daily Meal asked a slew of tastemakers -- such as Alton Brown and Ruth Reichl, April Bloomfield and Mario Batali -- about their secret food indulgences, and got some surprising answers. GQ's food guru Alan Richman has a soft spot for garlicky sausage, and gets his fix with Katz's Deli's knoblewurst. We won't ask which party he's going to after he loads up on garlic.

And what does the doyenne of Italian food, Lidia Bastianich, snack on when she has a sweet tooth? Nope, not a tiramisù. Lidia joneses for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Frankly, so do we.

Who's the chef who loves to nosh on Popeye's fried chicken?
You can almost hear the "Hootie Hoo!" call-and-response now. Former "Top Chef All-Stars" cheftestant Carla Hall is going to be a host on ABC's new food show, "The Chew," debuting in September 2011. Hall will be among a rotating team of hosts such as Mario Batali, Michael Symon ("Iron Chef"), and nutrition expert Daphne Oz (The Dorm Room Diet) to create a show that covers "food from EVERY angle -- as a source of joy, health, family ritual, friendship, breaking news, dating, fitness, weight loss, travel adventures and life's moments," notes an ABC press release. In other words, "The View" comes to the kitchen.

Also on deck at ABC, "The Revolution," premiering in January 2012, a lifestyle show focusing on taking the weight off and changing your life. Hosted by fashion guru Tim Gunn ("Project Runway"), and produced by "Biggest Loser" alum J.D. Roth, "The Revolution," says ABC, features "a unique concept: each week one woman's five-month weight-loss journey will unfold in just five days, with daily results and a final transformational reveal on Friday."

President Obama is hosting his third annual White House Seder on the first night of Passover, April 18, 2011, complete with a full Seder menu including brisket, noodle kugel and macaroons.

The tradition started in a windowless basement of the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Sheraton , during the April 2008 campaign, when Eric Lesser, then Ground Logistic Coordinator (he's now the Director of Strategic Planning for Austan Goolsbee, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers), got his hands on an "emergency Seder kit" from the University of Pennsylvania's Hillel Center. As Lesser and his fellow campaign staffers Arun Chaudhary and Herbie Ziskend were about to begin the Seder, Obama asked if he could join.

Instead of ending the meal with the customary "Next year in Jerusalem," Obama said "Next year in the White House." True to his word, the Seder continues at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Continue reading President Obama's Passover Seder

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kate Middleton Jelly Bean To Be Auctioned on eBay

Seems Kate Middleton is having a Willy Wonka moment. Her image has turned into a Golden Ticket for a Somerset, England, man who claims he's not only spotted the soon-to-be Princess of Wales on a jelly bean, but he's selling the Kate-like Kandy on eBay!

When Wesley Hosie opened his jar of Jelly Bean Factory sweets, one mango-flavored bean stood out, he told The Telegraph. The speckles on the candy's surface had formed a pattern that created an image of Kate Middleton, flowing hair, Mona Lisa smile, and all. "She was literally lying there staring back at me," he told the paper. (Question: Wesley, what were you drinking with those jelly beans?)

Another man would have just popped the Kate-like candy in his mouth and gone back to watching the cricket match. But not Mr. Hosie, who has decided to take the jelly bean to the world, through eBay, where the starting bid will be 500 pounds sterling (about $800 and change). Next up, a Prince William chocolate bar?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Recap

Aw shucks. Jamie Oliver's much awaited Food Revolution LA-style sure got off to a rough start. Especially for a guy armed with a simple question: Why can't we do better when it comes to school lunches for our kids?

Before the show even gets underway, Jamie lets us in on a big problem -- the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has refused to give him access to schools. He's been denied.

"They will not let me into any school," says Oliver. "That means war."

So starts the famous chef's familiar drumbeat. He takes to the airways on co-producer Ryan Seacrest's radio program and eventually welcomes a crowd of parents and kids to Jamie's LA Kitchen where they unload gobs of unappetizing, highly processed, plastic wrapped meals culled from their own schools.
Stephen Colbert remains dedicated to exposing the absurdity of the food world in his "Thought for Food" segments on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report." This week he's taking on bacon: namely, the new bacon cologne we told you about last week, and Denny's infamous maple bacon sundae (our lukewarm review is here). Colbert's assessment of the sundae is typically wry: "Finally, an answer to the question 'What if we scraped the breakfast dishes into the freezer instead of the garbage?'"

He also says he's now one step closer to the American dream: Being bacon.
Season 2 of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution premieres Tuesday night at 8pm on ABC and from the looks of it, Oliver hasn't had an easy time convincing the 11 million residents of Los Angeles to improve their eating habits. In addition to being barred from entering L.A. public schools, Oliver has to deal with issues unique to such a large urban area -- such as the fact that it's easier to obtain "a gun, crack, or a prostitute" than a tomato in certain L.A. neighborhoods. Based on the preview clip below, the crusade in Los Angeles might make Oliver's struggles in Huntington, West Virginia (the location of season 1) look like child's play.
Three very different celebs have released cookbooks in recent weeks, each one with a unique spin. Rocker Sheryl Crow's If It Makes You Healthy: More than 100 Recipes Inspired by the Seasons has a personal narrative and get-fit message, while Eva Longoria's Eva's Kitchen: Cooking with Love for Family and Friends is built around homey recipes the actress has collected over the years. And although Gwyneth Paltrow has taken a bit of teasing for the highbrow tone of her book, My Father's Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family and Togetherness, it's clear she loves food and wants to pass on her enthusiasm. Which book suits your style?

If you ever get the chance to cook with Eva Longoria, you should probably bring a lemon.

The television actress recently released a cookbook, titled Eva's Kitchen: Cooking with Love for Family and Friends, and, as she told the AP, "I put lemon in everything, on everything." And she means everything: "It's really great for sauces, for dressings, for fish, for meat. I love lemon."

The cookbook is a homey collection of family recipes and dishes she's made over the years. The 36-year-old actress plays a former model on the ABC series "Desperate Housewives," but says her home life is a far cry from the stylized life of her character. Longoria says she cooks daily, although she tends to play fast and loose with ingredients. She told the AP that it was tough to translate her "a little of this and that" dishes into hard-and-fast recipes.

"I'm a natural cooker, and I cook by instinct, so if I want salt I'll put salt and if I don't I don't, so I felt really bad telling people to put, you know, a quarter-cup of cheese if they didn't want it," she told the AP. "You know, I'm like, `Or not! You don't have to!'"

Oh, Ina, we knew you'd do the right thing. After a week of getting hammered online for her apparent refusal to meet with a six-year-old leukemia patient, Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten has agreed to grant the boy's Make-A-Wish request.

Last week, TMZ reported that Garten denied Enzo Pereda's requests due to scheduling conflicts, but Garten said she only learned of his requests this past weeekend. (Her spokesman says she gets "100 requests a month to support charitable causes" and can't answer them all.)

If she really wants Enzo to forgive her, she should pull out all the stops and bake up her gooey brownie pudding cake.
