They've created this hilarious and slightly unsettling series of photos showing the iconic bears going under the knife for such, er, unorthodox procedures as a head transplant, limb transplant and split personality transplant (you'll just have to see that one for yourself). The photos of the procedures are accompanied by helpful hints: When preparing for surgery, remember that "dried Gummi gore can be wiped off with a paper towel or you can replace the whole blade."

If surgery whets your appetite for more Gummi fun, there's a related gallery on the site that teaches readers how to make a Gummi bear fruit smoothie. And the bears themselves might be relieved to see instructions for vodka-infused Gummis -- after all they've been through, they could probably use a drink.

[Via Instructables]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sweet! - Feast Your Eyes

Filed under: Candy, Feast Your Eyes

These fat, shiny, sugar-crusted gumdrops could make Willy Wonka weep for joy, and a dentist weep, period.

Given that the best candy can trigger nearly hallucinatory pleasures (chalk it up to the sugar high), it's somewhat fitting that this is not actually a photo of gumdrops. Technically, it is, but what you're really looking at is a photo of another photo of gumdrops. Taken by johnnypants over at Flickr, it's a shot of a promotional poster at Ikea. Sneaky, eh? Still, you've got to hand it to those Swedes: just as their furniture can fool anybody into thinking they know their way around an Allen wrench, these gumdrops are so vivid that you'd be forgiven for thinking they were gobbled up right after this photo was taken. And maybe they were ... somewhere in Sweden.

[Via Flickr]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

A Pig's Tale - Feast Your Eyes

Filed under: Snacks, Candy, North America, Meat, Feast Your Eyes

Pay no heed to those who thoughtlessly proclaim bacon-inflected desserts "so over," or "so December 2008."

Pictured is one of the reasons why. This delicacy, known as Pig Candy, is the genius of one Rhonda Kave of Roni-Sue's Chocolates. What Kave has done is create a union as holy as that of peanut butter and chocolate or vodka and tonic: fried bacon, dipped in chocolate. And that's it.

It's a marriage that is astoundingly pure yet diabolically addictive and, thanks to the beauty of online retail, has inspired slavish devotion far beyond the Roni-Sue headquarters on New York City's Lower East Side. This photo hints at the promise and madness contained in each salty-sweet nugget. While the shutterbug's ability to restrain herself long enough to take the pic is admirable, the subject likely met its demise shortly after being immortalized for the enjoyment of drooling procrastinators everywhere.

[Via Flickr]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Exclusive: Name That Sweetheart, Win 1.6M Sweethearts!

OK, let's be honest. If this slightly belated bit of promotional whimsy is any indication, plenty of you still want a piece of her.

To celebrate the doll's 50th, Dylan's Candy Bar created "Barbie Loves Dylan's," a line of chocolate and candy outfitted in colorful graphics befitting the belle's pop-art and pop-cultural legacy. We love the way these chocolates are packaged, with through-the-years pix inspiring affectionate memories of both "The Brady Bunch" and yearbook photos of days (and unfortunate hairstyles) gone by.

It's rare to come across chocolate whose packaging wouldn't look out of place next to a Warhol, and we applaud whatever graphic design genius was behind this. But if Barbie taught us anything, it's that beauty is skin deep, and that lesson unfortunately applies to the chocolate bearing her name. It tastes as plastic as Barbie herself or, in the words of one judge, "like drugstore Easter candy." Like Barbie herself, this chocolate could last 50 years ... in the back of a pantry.

For $14, a better move might be to pop the candies into a frame on the bedroom wall. 'Cause Barbie also taught us that when substance fails, style triumphs.
It's worth keeping in mind that these treats can be made any time of year. In fact, the darling flowers and bunnies from "The Ultimate Candy Book" shown above are actually found in the "Halloween Candy" section, but are the "Easter" variation. Confusing, we know ... but deliciously confusing. It strangely makes sense because the taste of these pretty blooms will remind you instantly of an autumnal treat -- candy corns.

Regardless, the treats are delish, and this recipe makes a firm sugary mixture that can be molded into nearly any pastel configuration for the Easter basket or springtime candy bowl. Press it into molds for an assortment of cute bunnies and chicks for a perfect family afternoon project. The candies come together much like fondant truffles, but this recipe doesn't take a lot of fuss, just a little help. Four or six hands are better than two, so get some kids, get cookin' and have fun!
Continue reading "Easter" Candy - 5 Easter Candies in 5 Days

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Peanut Butter Chocolate Eggs - 5 Easter Candies in 5 Days

Filed under: Nuts/seeds, Chocolate, Recipes, Candy, How To, Easter
It's easy to be mesmerized by decadent, complex flavors. Sometimes, though, the sweetest surprise is one that basks in simple, nostalgia-inducing basics.

Peanut butter Chocolate Eggs are a staple of the classic Easter basket. Nestled amongst the malted milk balls, cream eggs and bunnies, they are also a mystery: Seemingly innocuous chocolate conceals a treasure of nutty, buttery flavor. Some might take these treats for granted -- especially in their store-bought incarnation -- but we reckon once candy-lovers taste this incredible homemade variety they may not be able to go back to the bag.
Continue reading Peanut Butter Chocolate Eggs - 5 Easter Candies in 5 Days

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lemon Truffles - 5 Easter Candies in 5 Days

Filed under: Chocolate, Recipes, Candy, How To, Easter

From chocolate bunnies to bright, chipper Peeps, certain candies stick with us from childhood. That doesn't mean an Easter basket has to be free of adult-friendly, finger-licking flavor though. Why not parry the chocolate onslaught with bright and delicious citrus?

En route to a sugar coma this holiday, consider lemon: These white-chocolate lemon truffles are light, bright and fit well within the holiday color scheme. Though a tad time-consuming, they're well worth the effort. Just imagine biting through a bright, thin layer of silky white chocolate to get a tart burst of lemon -- it's our sprightly homage to the decadent Lindor truffle.

Easter never tasted so good!
Continue reading Lemon Truffles - 5 Easter Candies in 5 Days

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Homemade Peeps! - 5 Easter Candies in 5 Days

Filed under: Recipes, Candy, How To, Easter

Not all candy-making is a science involving a delicate dance of temperature and time. One Easter candy, in fact, can be quite fun -- fun to make, fun to eat, and fun to play with. You know what I'm talking about -- the cute, adorable, and delicious Peeps.

While many candies have devoted fans, nothing seems to inspire the fun and frivolity of the Peep. These little marshmallow suckers inspire an insane following. The blog Unlikely Words found just about every Peeps-themed site of note on the Internet -- pickled Peeps, Presidential Peeps and even anti-Peeps. Even better is the annual contest held by The Washington Post in which people diorama the heck out of their Peeps.
Candies can seem like a foreign substance to home cooks -- delicious, sugary concoctions that might have been whipped up by a magician. Hard, soft, chewy, tart, sweet, opaque or translucent, the incredible variety of shapes, sizes, flavors and textures can seem both unreal and a little intimidating, especially with Easter candy. Chocolate eggs that mimic real ones? That's gotta be magic.

The thing is -- while it seems other-worldly, candy making is perfectly within anyone's grasp. You can make almost any candy you conceive of with just a little time, patience, perseverance and creativity -- and Easter is the perfect time to start! That being said, a lot of candy recipes make it all seem deceptively easy, as if candy making is as simple as making a sandwich or whipping up a pie. Some really are that easy, but some are more on the scale of delicate art.

To start you on the path towards becoming a candy-making dynamo, I'm going to spend the week sharing Easter recipes with you. All have been filtered through me -- a woman who hasn't made candy since childhood.

After an uphill battle, I've filtered out the hassles and now have five candies that can make Easter all the sweeter. First up: Molding chocolate into tasty little candies.

Continue reading Tempering & Molding Chocolate - 5 Easter Candies in 5 Days

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Change Things Up With Key Lime Fudge

Filed under: Dessert, Recipes, Fruit, Candy

Most desserts seem to fall into one of three realms -- something frozen, something rich with chocolate or some sort of fruit pastry. But when these barriers start to dissolve, that's when the real magic happens -- like key lime fudge.

As one of those strange people who has always preferred fruity desserts to chocolate ones, I couldn't help but pick up key lime fudge on my recent trip to Key West. Unlike many chocolate-free fudges, this wasn't merely a thick, confectioner's sugar-filled treat, but something that balanced the creaminess of fudge with the tart key lime without relying on that all-too-familiar frosting flavor.

Experimenting at home, I've come up with the perfect recipe to replicate that fresh citrus flavor. It relies on white chocolate, which frees us from the throes of frosting flavor that the confectioner's sugar inevitably leaves, and it's quite easy to make.

Continue reading Change Things Up With Key Lime Fudge

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Papabubble's Custom Candies

Filed under: Candy, On the Blogs, Stores & Shopping, Artisan Foods

On a walk through New York last week, I stumbled upon Papabubble, an intriguing candy shop based in Barcelona with an outpost in Manhattan.

The shop is truly a candy paradise. Not only do you get to watch candy in-the-making, but you can also sample several different flavors, such as caramel filled apple, soda, fruit mix, and their current Easter mix. They even have candy molded into enormous lollipop rings.

Here, all the candy is made in the store before your eyes. Papabubble handcrafts their unique candy from sugar and natural essential oils, such as oil of clove.

Papabubble makes custom-made candies molded into specific shapes and with written statements or designs. While I was there, they were making "It's a Boy!" candy for a woman who had just given birth. Their turnaround for bespoke candy is about two weeks.

It's no wonder why Gadling got excited about the opening of Papabubble's New York store. It's located in between the Lower East Side, Little Italy, and SoHo on Broome Street between Mott and Mulberry.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bacon, Bacon Everywhere...And, Oh My Pants Did Shrink!

Filed under: Candy, Pork, America, Comfort Food, Meat, Ingredient Spotlight, Guilty Pleasures
What is the deal with bacon lately?

Admittedly, it's not as if the delicious fruit of a smoked pig's belly was ever all that obscure; stlll, over the past few weeks, it has been gaining a fresh, and sometimes repulsive cultural relevance. A little over a month ago, Marisa McClellan covered The Bacon Explosion, a spicy, smoked, barbecue-basted brick of pure pork. Truth be told, the explosion is kind of like a bug zapper: terrifying and vaguely dangerous, yet attractive and deeply compelling. Worse yet, for those of us who don't have a meat smoker, the explosion's creators have put together an oven recipe.

As if this wasn't enough, over on RiffTrax Blog, Michael Nelson has announced his intention to eat nothing but bacon for an entire month. As he has struggled through February, a reader has produced a bacon effigy, dubbed FrankenBacon, to demonstrate the aftereffects of too much pork. For those of us who are sometimes haunted by the ghosts of our meat, FrankenBacon is actually a little scary.

Meanwhile, in my constant quest for the best boutique bonbons in New York City, I recently came across an article about Roni-Sue's Chocolates, a company in New York's Essex Street Market. Although Roni-Sue's carries a wide array of truffles and candies, I was immediately drawn to their pig candy. Basically crispy-fried bacon dipped in chocolate, this hearkens back to the sugar-crusted pig candy that my wife and I used to make.

Meanwhile, I'm getting that old carnival feeling--the same one I have when the halcyon call of the deep fryer draws me in with its promise of batter-fried Oreos and funnel cakes. Must...resist...the call...

Who am I kidding? I'll probably hit Roni-Sue's this weekend. On the bright side, maybe it will make it easier for me to resist the siren song of the Bacon Explosion!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Human Vending Machines - A Little Orwell With Your Candy?

Filed under: British Isles, Business, Candy, Food Oddities, Stores & Shopping, Food Gadgets, New Products, Europe, Comfort Food

My daughter is addicted to Dirty Jobs, a Discovery Channel show in which the host tries out the filthiest, nastiest jobs in the country. Watching him work his way through a septic system or clean gum off a sidewalk, it's hard to imagine worse tasks than the ones that he regularly undertakes. However, in a recent move, Japan and Kit Kat seem to have figured out an innovative new way to lower the bar on horrifyingly bad employment.

Kit Kat's new Human Vending Machines combine the best elements of convenience foods, automatic vending, and slavery in one brutally delicious, schadenfreude-laden package. Basically a snack machine with a human being trapped inside, the machines put a personal face on candy vending transactions. Users put in their money, make their choice, and ask the man inside to send out the chocolate. The vendor, in turn, smiles at the customer, grabs the candy, and drops it into a slot.

There is no word yet on whether, underneath their smiles, the anonymous vendors are dying inside, asking themselves what series of bad choices led them to become nameless cogs in a snack-distribution empire. Similarly, one has to wonder if any of the vendors has found himself on a weekend-long alcoholic bender after selling a candy bar to his former prom date, a slickly-attired professional who pretended that she didn't recognize him.

Perhaps I'm projecting.
Continue reading Human Vending Machines - A Little Orwell With Your Candy?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

French Push Pop Ad Pushes Propreity Levels

Filed under: Candy, On the Blogs, France

We all know that French ads are a bit more saucy and racy, but does this hilariously absurd one push the limit? Fellow blog Urlesque cries out, "Someone should probably be arrested for making this commercial featuring French kids and push pops." I'm wondering whether or not this push pop candy still exists. While I remember it from my childhood, I cannot recall any of its ads, certainly nothing like this.

Apart from the perhaps unintentional suggestions of the kids' gestures, the ad seems to promote the candy as a way to break up fights. We introduced you to chocolate from Askinosie, Dagoba and Green & Blacks. Hopefully you're not too chocolated-out after the weekend for just one more bite. Because if the chocolate is Escazu, you will want to make room.

Escazu is a town in Costa Rica and a chocolatier in Raleigh, North Carolina. According to the Escazu website, chocolatier Hallot Parson formed Escazu Artisan Chocolates after travels through Venezuela and Costa Rica, including visits to the cocoa farms. Thus was born -- perhaps more accurately bloomed -- the vision of artisinal chocolate executed with respect to chocolate's Latin American heritage.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Conversation Hearts, Human Version

We wrote earlier about Necco's new Conversation Hearts with foodie sayings. Well Conversation Hearts have popped up again on our interwebs today, this time in the form of artist Nathan Sawaya's Necco Human Heart. Oh yes, this is indeed an anatomically correct heart made up of hundreds of pink, yellow and purple Conversation Hearts. Sawaya writes: "I'm not a fan of Valentine's Day. It is a made up holiday and makes more people feel sad than happy. It can make your heart feel vulnerable. Almost edible." Amen.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Conversation Hearts For Foodies

This year's batch of Sweethearts Conversation Hearts have a foodie theme, inscribed with sayings like "Recipe 4 Love," "Top Chef," "Sugar Pie," "Table 4 Two," and "Yum Yum." Beats the "B My Sweetie" hearts of my childhood, which were always embarassing to eat in public when you were 12.

A brief walk down Conversation Heart memory lane: I used to live in Cambridge, Massachusetts and would sometimes walk past the old New England Confectionery Company factory, where they made Conversation Hearts and Necco wafers (New England Confectionery Company, get it). The factory was a brick fortress, with ancient studded steel doors and high rusted fences. On the very top was a water tower painted rainbow colors to look like a roll of Necco wafers. When the candy machines were rollin,' you could smell that musty, spicy-sweet scent for a mile and see pastel-colored steam billowing out the smoke stack. A real Yankee version of Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chocolates for Valentine's Day - Slashfood Ate (8)

Filed under: Chocolate, Candy, Stores & Shopping, Lists, How To, Slashfood Ate, Valentine's Day
Studies reveal that certain sweets, like chocolate activate the libido. Just last week, The Times of India had an article reporting on the aphrodisiac effects of chocolate particularly on men. Food scientists tracked down a specific ingredient responsible for these effects - Eurycoma Longifolia Jack.

Chocolates have long been associated with romance. As far back as the eighteenth century, food enthusiasts, like Brillat Savarin, raved about chocolate's corporal effects. So, when thinking about sweets for Valentine's Day, I often think of various chocolate confections and cakes.

Below are 8 chocolates I highly recommend this Valentine's Day:
