First there was the meat dress, and now the eggshell version of the sedan chair. What is it about Lady Gaga surrounding herself with edibles, or at least the iconic symbols of the things we eat? Gaga's entrance to the Grammy Awards last night led the editors at TheStir to posit that the Lady has serious food fetishes (or at least a case of serious food-related drama) going on. Read all about it at TheStir.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver Accused of Fish Hypocrisy

Filed under: Food Politics, Celebrities, Chefs, Eco-Friendly

Chefs Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver talk the talk about sustainable fishing, and even appear on the BBC show "The Big Fish Fight," where they go to the source, and supposedly walk the walk. But, report the editors at TheStir, both chefs have been caught red-handed serving unstainable fish at their restaurants. What were the two star chefs putting on the plate that caused the ruckus? Find out at TheStir.
Love means never having to say you're sorry (thank you, Love Story), and it also means never giving your beloved a canned ham. Or a fruit basket filled not with exotic cherimoyas or passion fruit but a big pile of bananas and Red Delicious apples. OK, it is the thought that counts. But it shouldn't take a trip to The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus to come up with gift ideas that food lovers in your life can drool over. Of course, maybe a canned ham is just the ticket for that special frenemy. The editors over at TheStir give you the lowdown on gift-giving don'ts.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Restaurants + Babies = Rules

Filed under: On the Blogs, Restaurants

If dining out with your baby has left you wondering if the kids will be in high school before you can enjoy a peaceful restaurant meal, check out the advice from our friends at TheStir. They've laid down five rules that will help you decide where, when, and how to make an away-from-home meal with kids a lot less stressful. For one, don't decide to try the latest four-star chef's place with your pride and joy in tow. Of course you want to expose your children to great cooking at an early age, but maybe baby doesn't want to sit through a seven-course tasting menu. If he could actually do that it might be a matter for the Guinness Book of Records. Visit TheStir for more great tips.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Can Meat Save the Planet?

Filed under: On the Blogs, Food Politics

For those of you who love to rant against vegans, you're about to get fuel for your fire. The Stir just posted a story about how Simon Fairlie's new book, Meat, a Benign Extravagance, already has high-profile English vegan activist George Monbiot thinking differently about meat. Monbiot's vegan retraction "I was wrong about veganism" is a delicious read for carnivores.

That doesn't mean you can now scarf down a Big Mac guilt free (environmentally speaking) -- it's all about which meat you eat and how it's raised. Head over to The Stir to read about the 5 ways that meat can be earth friendly...

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chicken Nuggets: The Ugly Truth?

Filed under: Fast Food, Frozen Food

We all know that fast food never looks the same as it does in advertisements. But what do TV dinners look like compared to the photo on the box? Adriana Velez from The Stir took five popular brand-name frozen dinners and put them to the test. Do Smart Ones lasagna varieties really stack up to be three inches high? Is your frozen dinner as shiny as it looks in the photos?
Does it seem like fast-food mascots are getting creepier and creepier? Brittny Drye over at The Stir noticed this disturbing trend, and decided to round up the 10 Creepiest Fast Food Mascots, ranging from weird lips to rats (yes, you read that right...rats.) The thing with endorsements is that the featured celebrities are actually supposed to use the products -- that's what makes the public flock to buy it.

How can we be sure the street food trend is out of control? Let's put it this way: Taco Bell is capitalizing on it.

The fast food taco chain has introduced three new "Cantina Tacos" -- including fire-grilled chicken, beef carne asada, and pork carnitas -- each served on two corn tortillas with onion, cilantro, and a lime wedge.

Sounds good, right? But even better than the new taco line is the spin campaign the company is using to market it ...
According to a recent blog post on The Stir, many of the smoothies that fast-food chains are selling these days are anything but healthy.

"Even the new McDonald's Wild Berry Smoothie and comparable Jamba Juice Berry Yumberry Smoothie are just okay -- they are relatively low-cal (210 and 230 respectively) but still pack mega grams of sugar."
Technology already exists to create meat synthetically or in-vitro using cultured animal cells. Forget farm-to-table. Welcome to test tube-to-table.

Before you start wondering what the origins of the meat on your plate are, don't panic: Synthetic meat is still too costly to actually sell.

According to a post on the blog, The Stir, some environmentalists are pro synthetic meat because it creates less greenhouse gas, while critics bemoan the fact that man-made meat will take us further from farm.

If we told you it tasted just as good as conventional meat, would you want to try it?

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice is coming out with a cookbook called Skinny Italian on May 4 -- which just goes to show that all you need to be considered an authority on cooking these days is apparently to flip over tables when angry and talk about "bubbies."

But Giudice isn't the only celebrity who has authored a cookbook. Check out these odd celebrity cookbooks and cook from them -- if you dare!

1. Dolly Parton

Love, love Dolly. But would I ever buy Dolly's Dixie Fixin's: Love, Laughter and Lots of Good Food from My Tennesse Kitchen? Not a chance. Dolly should be singing country -- not telling us how to eat country.
