Las Vegas has oversaturated its high-end restaurant scene, according to a prominent restaurateur.

Drew Nieporent, president of the Myriad Restaurant Group which owns Nobu, believes Las Vegas' new City Center development and its top restaurants may kill other eateries in this gaming town.

"Las Vegas is a fantastic place now for restaurants except it seems to me they've oversaturated," Nieporent tells Bloomberg. "This new City Center has approximately, I think it's close to two dozen new establishments, all pretty high end, and what that's going to is it's going to -- I think they'll do well because it's new -- but a lot of the other places in Las Vegas are going to feel the impact because they don't have the mass audience like we do in New York."

Nieporent says the current economic crisis hasn't affected New York's high-end dining scene too badly because "New York is 365 days of business."
Continue reading Drew Nieporent on Las Vegas Dining

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Good Eats: The Early Years' - Cookbook Spotlight

Filed under: Books, Chefs, Reviews, Cookbook Spotlight

'Good Eats: The Early Years'
By Alton Brown
Stewart, Tabori & Chang -- 2009
Buy it on Amazon

Fans of Alton Brown are sure to like "Good Eats: The Early Years," an episode-by-episode companion guide to his popular Food Network show. Of course, Brown has gone on to host "Iron Chef America" and become a spokesman for Welch's and Diamond Crystal Salt, but it is "Good Eats" that garners him perhaps the greatest culinary respect.

The book follows "Good Eats" through six seasons, episode by episode. There are diagrams, screengrabs from the show, tips from each episode, and recipes, which Brown calls "applications." Think Mr. Wizard meets Julia Child on Monty Python -- that's actually what this host is going for.

"Good Eats: The Early Years" is not the TV show. "It's more like 400 pages of liner notes," Brown writes. "But really good liner notes."
Have you heard the story of the Christmas pickle?

According to Bronner's, the world's largest Christmas store in Frankenmuth, Mich., it's an old German tradition to hide a glass pickle ornament on the tree after the children go to bed on Dec. 24.

The first one to spy the ornament on Christmas morning gets an extra gift from St. Nick -- or so the legend goes.
We've heard of the bacon explosion and meat cocktails, but have you dared to try the McNuggetini?

Alie Ward and Georgia Hardstark created the drink this fall and are riding a wave of fame -- meeting with casting agents, drinking McNuggetinis with Hoda Kotb of "The Today Show" and readying themselves for a Playboy magazine article, the New York Times reports.

In their McNuggetini video, the gals create a sweet and savory cocktail out of a McDonald's chocolate shake, vanilla vodka, chicken McNuggets and barbecue sauce. The meat is used as a garnish.

"Together we've invented a drink that combines dinner, dessert and booze in one chalice of multitasking," the women say.
Continue reading McNuggetini Brings Fame to Its Creators

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Crack Pie Addictive as Well ...

Slashfood has long been a fan of Momofuku Milk Bar's Crack Pie, and it seems we're in good company.

Anderson Cooper confessed Tuesday during a guest host spot on "Live with Regis and Kelly" that he and his famous mom, Gloria Vanderbilt, can't get enough of Christina Tosi's Crack Pie.

"They have a pie that's called crack pie that is literally crack," Cooper said. "There is crack in that pie because once you have that pie, you can think of nothing else but having more of that crack pie."

Well there's not exactly crack in there. Tosi's recipe calls for butter, heavy cream and sugar. Lots of it.

"I sent it to my mom," Cooper said. "My mom's now addicted to crack -- pie. And uh, yeah, seriously, my teeth are going to fall out. It's like doing crack. After a while of doing it your teeth will fall out."

To which, Kelly Ripa quipped, "crack pie is whack."

To drive home just how much he loves the pie, he brought the studio audience samples on Wednesday's show.

Cooper's also a fan of Milk Bar's Compost cookie. "It's the best cookie I've ever had."

UPDATE: Now you can order Crack Pie and Compost Cookies from Momofuku Milk Bar online.
'The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl'
by Ree Drummond
William Morrow -- 2009
Buy It on Amazon

Ree Drummond started her popular blog, The Pioneer Woman, in 2006 to chronicle her life on an Oklahoma cattle ranch with her husband, whom she dubbed "Marlboro Man" and her four children. Her blog has garnered a cult following -- in part because of the lush, step by step photos she takes for her cooking section.

"The recipes I share on this site are tried and true -- I've made them over and over," she writes on the blog. "And I use only the simplest of ingredients, considering the country market near our home has never even thought about carrying yellowfin tuna, star anise or wasabi paste."

That philosophy of hearty, simple meals carries through in this, her first cookbook.
Coca-Cola will return to Costco shelves next week, the Associated Press reports.

The wholesaler dropped the popular soft drink last month due to a pricing dispute, but that's been settled, Costco says.

Costco CFO Richard Galanti told investors Thursday that Coca-Cola would be back "around Monday," the AP said.

"Our signs basically said it all -- until we can provide our members with these products at competitive prices and provide our members with value, we are not prepared to sell it and we are now going to sell it," Galanti told the AP.

Coca-Cola didn't want to make the price cuts Costco wanted in order to keep profits high for the soft drink maker, the AP said.
Julie Powell, the writer who blogged her way through Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking Vol. 1," is back with her second book, a sequel memoir about the world of butchery.

"Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession" follows Powell as she has an affair, tries to rebuild her marriage and learns about butchery. As Slashfood alum Rebecca Marx puts it in the Village Voice, "the act of trying to choose between one's bottomlessly loving husband and one's snakey-sounding lover, all while having the financial freedom to hang out with butchers just for the hell of it, is accompanied by the sound of the world's most minuscule violin."

Powell admitted this week that fans of "Julie & Julia" might find it a bit much: "People coming from the movie 'Julie & Julia' and picking up 'Cleaving' are going to be in for some emotional whiplash," she tells the Associated Press. "I don't believe it's going to be a Nora Ephron movie."
Thanksgiving may be all about tradition, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for a bit of experimentation.

In Diane Morgan's follow-up to "The Thanksgiving Table," she looks to new culinary traditions on the American Thanksgiving table. While there are old favorites like deviled eggs and giblet gravy, they share the spotlight with linguiça sausage stuffing and hazelnut popovers. This is not a T-day cookbook for your stodgy grandmother.
Paula Deen may love ham, but not this much.

She was helping unload hams for Hosea Feed the Hungry in Atlanta on Monday, when she was hit in the face with a flying pork product.

"Oh, I didn't know it was being thrown," she says in the video.

Deen is no stranger to public humiliation. Earlier this year, her pants fell down during a demonstration at the Food Network South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

But like Miami mooning incident, Deen has quickly moved beyond Monday's pork fracas.

"Yes it's true, I should have ducked, but it's worth a ham in the face to feed so many," she says on Twitter of her "ham-tastrophy."
OMG!!! The latest installment of the "Twilight" saga, "New Moon," is nigh upon us! Will you be celebrating with fast food?

The folks at Burger King think so. They're marketing a special BK Burger Shots six-pack for all you werewolves and, ahem, blood-sucking vampires out there. The mini burgers come with a special "Gift of Holiday Value" -- coupons for "Twilight" merch masquerading as collector's cards. Think of them as a vampire Valpak of savings.

Is any of this worth it? Find out after the jump.
Continue reading 'Twilight' Fans May Be Disappointed in Burger King 'New Moon' Promotion

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Editor's Picks - Best of the Rest

Filed under: Food News, Tinfoil Swan

On a quick trip to Mexico City last weekend, we got adventurous and tried escamole -- ant eggs harvested from agave plants.

A friend had informed us prior to sampling what exactly these buttery white grains were. Had we not known, we would have just found them to be pleasant, nutty things similar to cooked, toasted risotto. We ate them at the San Angel Inn, which serves up escamole with fresh guacamole and corn tortillas.
Miracle Whip is going after Stephen Colbert, after the Comedy Central star made fun of its "Don't Be So Mayo" ad campaign.

The condiment company has purportedly purchased every commercial during Thursday's "Colbert Report" and taken out an open-letter newspaper ad to Colbert saying "we will dominate the airspace on your show ... we will own you."

This comes after Colbert "pop[ped] open a jar of mayo whup-ass" during his Oct. 15 show.
Continue reading Miracle Whip Gunning for Stephen Colbert

Permalink | Email this | Comments

20 Questions with a Slashfoodie - Sara Bonisteel

Filed under: On the Blogs, Chefs, Interviews, News

Antojitos, as Barbara Sibley and Margaritte Malfy explain in their book of the same name, are small bites sometimes eaten as appetizers in Mexican cuisine and sometime just downed as a street snack to satisfy between-meals hunger pangs.

The owners of New York City's La Palapa have written a book that covers all manner of these spicy snacks -- from empanadas and tacos to ceviches and mole. Along the way, they give brief stories about the dishes as well as menus perfect for any fiesta, and colorful pages filled with images of Loteria cards and stock Mexican art that add a whimsical touch to the cookbook.
Julia Child certainly could make a mean boeuf bourguignon, but did you know she could also whip up the building blocks of life?

It's kind of scary watching her describe scientific diagrams using her chef's knife as a pointer. But it's helpful for all us home cooks that she converts grams into teaspoons. Bon appetit!

Even if you haven't eaten at one of the Momofuku restaurants in New York City, chances are you've heard about David Chang -- the James Beard award-winning chef painted at times as a "neurotic" "culinary rebel" who just happens to be "a pork-loving, pickle-happy individualist."

Well, now it's his turn to tell his story. The world is finally getting a cookbook from the man who built his food empire on a simple bowl of ramen.

"Living up to high expectations sucks," he writes in "Momofuku." "But for all that, I know this: I am one very lucky bastard."

Lucky, yes, but it helps that his creations are filled with unlikely but delicious flavor pairings.
