A Japanese elementary school kicked off a whale of a controversy during its observance of a national week to commemorate lunches in public schools.

For its special menu one day last week, Azabu Elementary School in central Tokyo's Minato ward served the students whale meat, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The School Affairs Section of the Secretariat of the Minato Board of Education said in a written statement that each school was free to plan its special menus that week, and the goal was to include "traditional, local, historical, and cultural dishes," a blogger for the paper wrote.
Continue reading Whale Meat: A School Lunch Treat?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Woman Claims McDonald's Employee Spit in Her Face

A Chicago woman is suing McDonald's after an employee allegedly spit in her face when she tried to order a late-night (or early morning, depending on how you see it) cheeseburger, the Chicago Tribune reported.

According to a suit filed in Cook County Circuit Court on Wednesday, Sarah Theines claims the incident occurred when she pulled up to the drive-thru of a McDonald's in Chicago's West Side to order a cheeseburger at 3:50 a.m. one morning last December.

The suit alleges an employee told her in "an aggressive and unfriendly tone" that she couldn't order the burger -- only the breakfast menu was available.
Continue reading Woman Claims McDonald's Employee Spit in Her Face

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Celebrity Cookbooks Go Digital

Cookbooks from high-profile cooks and celebrity chefs -- including Giada De Laurentiis, Bobby Flay, Mark Bittman, David Chang, Martha Stewart and Alice Waters -- have gone digital.

Popular cookbook publishers Clarkson Potter and Ten Speed Press released 88 cookbooks as full-color e-books, optimized for color e-readers like the iPad and Nookcolor.

The titles will also be digitally available in black-and-white for Amazon's Kindle and other non-color digital readers. More than 2,600 e-cookbooks are available in Amazon.com's Kindle store. Barnes & Noble's Nook bookstore has more than 1,700 digital titles available.

While some, like Flay's Throwdown!, are from the fall 2010 list, 81 of the titles (such as Waters's The Art of Simple Food) are from the backlist.
Continue reading Celebrity Cookbooks Go Digital

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Owner of Michael Jordan's The Steakhouse NYC Declares Bankruptcy

The owners of Michael Jordan's The Steakhouse NYC, which overlooks the famed lobby of Grand Central Terminal, are bankrupt. No, not His Airness; the restaurant group just licenses Jordan's name.

The Glazier Group, which owns the New York steakhouse and six Strip House restaurants, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Southern District Court on Monday, Crain's New York Business reported.

Owners Peter and Penny Glazier said the group's restaurants and catering venues, including Bridgewaters and the Twenty Four Fifth ballroom near Manhattan's Washington Square Park, will not be affected. (The Michael Jordan's Steakhouse at Mohegan Sun Casino, in Connecticut, is owned by the Cornerstone Restaurant Group, with no affiliation to the Glazier Group.)

"We are restructuring corporate debt," Peter Glazier told Crains. "We tried to make a deal with our lenders, and we could not." The restaurants, he added, are "doing very well."
Continue reading Owner of Michael Jordan's The Steakhouse NYC Declares Bankruptcy

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Toast National Sandwich Day with Sandwich Cocktails

A cheeseburger in a glass, a potent PB&J, a liquid BLT -- it's time to take the sandwich into cocktail hour. Literally.

In honor of National Sandwich Day on Nov. 3, Flor de Caña rum has teamed up with mixologists to turn sandwich classics into tasty libations.

The Sandwich Cocktail menu created by the Nicaraguan rum company features "crustless cocktails" -- the Peanut Butter & Jelly, the Cheeseburger and the BLT.
Continue reading Toast National Sandwich Day with Sandwich Cocktails

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tom Colicchio Says No More Crafts

Just when we were hoping Tom Colicchio could see his way to opening a Craft branch in Queens. But it's not to be. With the opening of his newest upscale eatery, Riverpark, in a Manhattan biotech complex overlooking the East River, the celebrity chef, who spent a decade building his Craft empire, says he's retiring the Craft brand to preserve its caché.

"I don't see opening more Crafts in New York City or anywhere else in the U.S.," Colicchio told Crain's for a piece on Riverpark. "The assumption is that it's a chain, and that dilutes the brand."

In addition to the original on East 19th Street in Manhattan, Colicchio has opened Crafts in Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta and also has 'wichcraft and Craftsteak restaurants, Eater NY reported.
Continue reading Tom Colicchio Says No More Crafts

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shoppers Less Likely to Buy Junk Food With Cash

If you're trying to eat healthy, put down that debit card.

New research shows that customers are less likely to buy unhealthy foods if they use cash than if they pay with credit or debit cards for groceries, according to a report from Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

Over the course of six months, researchers from Cornell University and the State University of New York in Binghamton and Buffalo followed 1,000 households, analyzing their shopping behavior. Their study found that when the shoppers paid with credit or debit cards instead of cash, they put more junk food in their shopping carts, the study showed.

What's downing a million Big Macs when there's a pot o' gold at the end of the burger rainbow? How about 2.6 million?

That's how many you would need to eat-2,617,371 sandwiches-to win the $25,000 cash prize in McDonald's Monopoly promotion at odds of 1 in 150,622,625, according to a calculator made by the creators of Eat With a Spork, Consumerist reported.

That's a lot of Big Macs. Maybe even 999,900 more than you planned on eating in a lifetime.

It's official. As we reported here in September, one of New York's swank dining spots (which was known more for its prime location than for its food), Tavern on the Green is now home to four food trucks.

The shuttered restaurant's new residents opened for business in Central Park the New York Post reported. In a space that was once the tavern's "Crystal Room," you can now buy tacos, dumplings, soup, and ice cream.

"We did great today; it was the introduction," food truck owner Leslie Lampert told the Post. "There are a lot of curious parkgoers here. This is nostalgia for me in terms of having Tavern on the Green in my life, personally and culturally. This makes me so proud."

Lampert owns a soup and sandwich truck called Ladles of Love, after the shop she runs in Mt. Kisco, N.Y.

McDonald's is trying something old and something new this fall at its U.S. locations. But it has nothing to do with the McWeddings they're throwing in Hong Kong (see yesterday's post).

The fast-food chain is bringing back its much lauded (by some) McRib sandwich on November 2 for a six-week run at its stores across the U.S. -- the first time in 16 years the sandwich will be available nationwide, the Wall Street Journal reported. "It doesn't sell well all year long because people get tired of it," McDonald's USA President Jan Fields told the Journal. Weary customers, you've had your break, and now your ribs are back.

McDonald's franchises in Nebraska, Maryland and New Mexico will also be testing the company's new chicken flatbreads this fall, Nation's Restaurant News reported.
Continue reading McDonalds Brings Back McRib, Introducing Chicken Flatbreads

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Will "Veggie Bot" Fight Childhood Obesity?

Want your kids to crave vegetables? Maybe the veggies need to be shaped like robots or race cars.

Or so goes the thinking of Oklahoma man Lee Bayless. His latest invention, Veggie Bots, is a set of tools that turns vegetables like carrots, celery, cukes and radishes into building blocks, The Oklahoman reported.

If you can get a kid interested in vegetables and healthy eating, Bayless believes, maybe, just maybe, childhood-obesity rates will drop. "I think we have the right product at the right time," he told the paper.
Continue reading Will "Veggie Bot" Fight Childhood Obesity?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tyler Florence's Sandwich Showdown -- NYC Wine & Food Festival

"Did you know you could have this much fun between two slices of bread?" asked chef Tyler Florence during Sunday's New York City Wine & Food Festival's Ultimate Sandwich Showdown (sponsored by Breville USA and Hellmann's mayonnaise). Florence played host as New York chefs pulled out all the stops to make the dream sandwich, using everything from lobster to oxtail to Italian-style pork loin. To vote, attendees dropped tokens they were given into mayonnaise jars placed at the sandwich-maker of their choice.

In the end, it was Blue Ribbon's bone-marrow and oxtail marmalade sandwich with a side of cucumber salad that took the Showdown's best-in-show, and Florence presented the chefs and staff with a $2,500 prize.
Continue reading Tyler Florence's Sandwich Showdown -- NYC Wine & Food Festival

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Milk and Cookies with Martha Stewart -- NYC Wine & Food Festival

Americans eat about two billion cookies a year, said Martha Stewart, who has just the iPhone app for all those cookie lovers. But, she added, that's probably a little shy of the actual number. The domestic doyenne was speaking to guests at the milk-and-cookies event she hosted at the New York City Wine & Food Festival on Saturday morning at the New York Times building in Manhattan.

As part of the cookie fest, New York's finest pastry chefs showed off their creations -- from the local bakery to the high-end eatery. Red Hook's Baked bakery had their salt-and-pepper sandwich cookies; Babbo's pastry chef, Gina DePalma, had chocolate-pistachio biscotti on hand. A total of eighteen restaurants and bakeries had cookies for the crowd, and Manhattan Milk provided organic moo juice and yogurt for a healthy side. And there were four hands-on stations for kids, to mix it up and decorate the sweets.
Continue reading Milk and Cookies with Martha Stewart -- NYC Wine & Food Festival

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pantry Empty? Ever look inside your fridge, survey the random food items -- the single spud, the capers, the just-more-than-a-rind of Parmesan -- and think, Hmm. What am I going to do with that?

A new iPhone app from Limit Point Software wants to help you make a meal out of the motley crew of edibles. Foodmatic 1.0 helps users create recipes with what they've got on hand.

Give Foodmatic an ingredient or a set of ingredients, and its database can tell you how to use them. The app suggests other ingredients that would go well with that particular food, and lets you tap the suggestion to add it to the recipe-in-the-works. It even gives your ensemble a flavor score, the higher the more delicious. Sounds like having one of those impossibly quick improvisational cooks (the human kind) who always seem to be able to throw together an omelet, even when there isn't a single egg in the house.
Continue reading Pantry Empty? We can only speculate what Willy Wonka would do in an economic downturn, but the company that Milton Hershey built is downsizing. Almost a century after it opened on the corners of Chocolate and Cocoa Streets in the eponymously named company town among company towns, confection giant Hershey's Chocolate is closing the factory that started it all.

Chocolate production is moving to a brand new location, just outside the town of Hershey, but 500 Hershey workers are not going along for the grand opening. The company is instituting lay-offs in an effort to remain competitive in the global marketplace, NPR reported.

Milton Hershey broke ground for the plant in 1903, and the town -- with its theme park and Hershey's Kiss-shaped street lamps -- grew along with the chocolate company. "They went hand in hand," Pam Whitenack, head of archives at the Hershey museum, told NPR.
One of our staffers went wild with fear about what this news meant for the future of what she deemed "the happiest place on earth": Don't worry, Hershey's Chocolate World, with its Great American Chocolate Tour and the Create-Your-Own-Candybar attraction, is still open for sweet-tooths across America.
Continue reading Hershey Giving the Kiss-off to Original Chocolate Factory

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tom Colicchio's Riverpark Hosts Starbucks Unveiling of New VIA Coffees

Filed under: New Products, Tastings, Chain Stores / Restaurants

A cup of instant coffee served with a high-end lunch and a spritz of perfume on the side? How many ways can we say this combination-event seemed off-the-beam? But this, in fact, was on the menu for the debut of the new Starbucks line of flavored VIA coffees.

The ubiquitous coffee company invited Slashfood to sample a tasting menu created by chef Sisha Ortúzar at Tom Colicchio's new Riverpark restaurant, in Manhattan, to highlight its four new flavors of Starbucks VIA instant coffees: Mocha, Caramel, Cinnamon and Vanilla.

The event was hosted by Starbucks and by New York Times Scent Critic Chandler Burr, who paired each coffee with a perfume that highlighted its flavor.
Continue reading Tom Colicchio's Riverpark Hosts Starbucks Unveiling of New VIA Coffees

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Happy Meal Toy Ban Ok'd in San Francisco

If you want to buy your kid a Happy Meal with Chicken McNuggets and fries in San Francisco, don't expect to find a toy inside.

A committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously voted, 3 - 0, to pass a proposed new rule banning toys from kids' meals unless they meet nutritional standards set by the board, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

In order to include toys, restaurants like McDonald's must limit the meals' sugar, sodium and fat content and include a half-cup of fruit and vegetables.

The legislation was put forth by board Supervisor Eric Mar as a "modest effort" to help curb childhood obesity, the Chronicle reported.
Continue reading Happy Meal Toy Ban Ok'd in San Francisco

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ellen Degeneres Wants You to Adopt a Turkey

Every Thanksgiving millions of turkeys find their way to Americans' dinner tables.

But animal protection organization Farm Sanctuary -- and spokesperson Ellen Degeneres -- is urging Americans to reconsider their Thanksgiving menus and adopt, rather than eat, Thanksgiving turkeys.

Degeneres has signed on as the spokesperson for Farm Sanctuary's 2010 "Adopt-a-Turkey Project," an annual program the sanctuary runs to raise awareness about the conditions of and mistreatment in factory turkey farms.

"Save a life this Thanksgiving, and join me in starting a new tradition by adopting a turkey instead of eating one through Farm Sanctuary's Adopt-A-Turkey Project," Degeneres said in a statement.

Last year Farm Sanctuary petitioned President Obama to send the White House's annual pair of "pardoned" turkeys to its shelter rather than to Disneyland, where turkeys pardoned by President Bush were sent, Slashfood reported.
Continue reading Ellen Degeneres Wants You to Adopt a Turkey

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Foods Get 'Birth Certificates' in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources is taking "buy local" to the next level with a new program that will help consumers identify locally grown food.

Beginning in January, the program lets qualified Massachusetts produce, lobster and dairy, aquaculture and forestry products sport a "Seal of Commonwealth Quality" label, the Boston Herald reported.

"It's a branding program," department Commissioner Scott Soares told the paper. "A big part of this is promoting the continuance of buying local and supporting local agriculture."
Continue reading Local Foods Get 'Birth Certificates' in Massachusetts

Permalink | Email this | Comments
