Arby's used to pride itself solely on its signature item -- the roast beef sandwich, and all its variations thereof -- but let's not forget that they also serve chicken, as well as salads and deli-style sandwiches. These days, their menu is quite diverse for a fast food chain -- much like their sibling restaurant chain Wendy's -- which they celebrate in song with their kitschy new jingle "Good Mood Food." However, there should be a disclaimer at the bottom of their ads which reads, "*Does not necessarily put you in a good mood," because sometimes their food just gets you full without really doing anything to your emotional state. Such is the case with the new Jr. Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: Arby's Jr. Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, a new addition to their Value Menu, is "value sized crispy tender all white-meat chicken," topped with shredded lettuce and Buffalo sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun. (Approx. 340 calories.)

The Price:$1.29. (Prices may vary at participating locations.)

The Wendy's vs. McDonald's french fry war is heating up. You've probably read the latest pronouncement: "In a national taste test, consumers said Wendy's fries taste better than McDonald's. When asked which they thought taste better after sampling both, 56% of participants chose Wendy's Natural-Cut Fries with Sea Salt. Only 39% preferred the taste of McDonald's."

Go ahead; be skeptical. That info comes straight from Wendy's website -- it's a part of their new ad campaign to topple McDonald's long-running reign as "America's Favorite Fries (McDonald's trademark phrase, by the way). And although that claim is on the pompous side, it's not without clout -- enough people have raved about them over the decades that McDonald's very identity is synonymous with those fried spuds. While some may disagree with their claims, there's no denying that McDonald's fries have set the standard that others in the fast-food industry aim for. Burger King has been trying to dethrone the Golden Arches for years, once even claiming victory after their own taste-test survey.

Wendy's claims their nationwide French fry survey was conducted by an independent research firm in eight American cities. However, there's some question about whether their resulting data is skewed -- it's their marketing campaign, after all.

We figured it was time for an unbiased review:

The Claims (From Their Websites): Wendy's latest fries are "made from 100% Russet potatoes and sliced 'natural-style' with the skin on for additional texture and taste, then cooked in proprietary oil that has 0 grams trans fat per serving. They are finished with a dusting of natural sea salt to further enhance the flavor." (Medium size: 420 calories.)

McDonald's "World Famous Fries" are "golden on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. Made with quality potatoes and cooked in our canola oil blend for zero grams of trans fat per serving." (Medium size: 380 calories.)
Continue reading Wendy's Fries vs. McDonald's Fries: Taste Test

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R.
When you hear about Pizza Hut's "new Ultimate Stuffed Crust Pizza," you might think it's déjà vu -- haven't stuffed crusts been around for years? True, basic idea of stuffed crust pizza is nothing new, however their new "Ultimate" Stuffed Crust Pizza takes the slice's edge to a new level, adding not only cheese, but also meat inside. The result is an interesting new rearrangement of their staple ingredients that should satisfy anyone's curiosity about just what Pizza Hut could do to make their fare even more gluttonous. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: Pizza Hut's new Ultimate Stuffed Crusts come in two varieties: Pepperoni (with cheese), or the superlative "Meaty," stuffed with pepperoni, Italian sausage, bacon, and cheese. Both pizza pies come with up to three toppings of your choice. We found no calorie count information for this specific product at the restaurant, nor at PizzaHut.com, although a non-ultimate Stuffed Crust Pizza with pepperoni toppings weighs in at 380 calories per slice (1/8 of a pie). With "Meat Lover's" toppings it's 480 calories per slice, so the Ultimate's calorie count is probably going to be a lot more than that, depending on what toppings you choose.

The Price:$12.99 for a large pie with up to three toppings. (Prices may vary at participating locations.)
Continue reading Pizza Hut Ultimate Stuffed Crust Pizza Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R.
America is obsessed with bacon. No longer is it just a side with eggs or the 'B' in a BLT; bacon and bacon flavoring have managed to find their way into chocolate, into mayonnaise, and even into vodka. As the slogan of America's Pork Checkoff Program says, "Bacon makes it better."

Denny's is no stranger to bacon, having served it up at breakfast for decades with their Grand Slams. However "America's diner," along with support from America's Pork Checkoff Program, has stepped up its bacon offerings with the new, limited-time menu called "Baconalia!: A Celebration of Bacon." The crispy and salted pork product invades Denny's like never before, with items like Bacon Flapjacks, Bacon Meatloaf, and the BBBLT. But the most peculiar and talked about new offering is the new Maple Bacon Sundae. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: Denny's Maple Bacon Sundae starts with a layer of maple-flavored syrup, topped with a layer of vanilla ice cream, topped with a layer of diced hickory-smoked bacon. All of this is topped by an additional set of the same layers.

The Price: $2.99.
Burger King has a history of being inspired by the menu items of their long-time adversary McDonald's. In the '90s, BK revamped their old soggy French fries with a crispier recipe that suspiciously resembled the ones at the Golden Arches. It was also during that decade that BK blatantly ripped off McDonald's Big Mac with the introduction of the short-lived Big King -- a hamburger that also contained two all-beef patties, a special sauce-like Thousand Island dressing, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed bun. Now, with the introduction of their new Chicken Tenders, it seems that BK is at it again -- this time looking to the McNugget for inspiration, and attempting to do more than just drop the "Mc." Here's how they rate:

The Claims: BK's new Chicken Tenders are "tender," "crispy," and contain "white meat." They come in servings of four (190 calories), eight (380 calories), or twenty (950 calories). If you do the math, you'll find that each piece is 47.5 calories, but that adds up when you dip it in any of the six sauces: Zesty, Honey Mustard, Ranch, Buffalo, Barbecue, or Sweet & Sour.

The Price:$1.00 for four; $1.99 for eight; $4.99 for 20. (Prices may vary at participating locations.)
Continue reading New Burger King Chicken Tenders Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. It's ironic that perhaps a decade ago, "street meat" sidewalk food was frowned upon by uppity gourmands, because these days, it's all the rage. Food trucks and sidewalk cart vendors are now the go-to spot to get good, inexpensive meals, and the fervor over these portable eateries has spawned the Vendy Awards and food truck rivalries in different American cities. Restaurants, including fast food chains, have embraced the trend: Last year Taco Bell introduced street-inspired "Cantina Tacos," and now Qdoba Mexican Grill has jumped on the urban bandwagon with their Mini Street Tacos. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: An order of Mini Street Tacos is a "light meal, heavy on authentic flavors" consisting of "three snack-sized soft corn tortilla tacos with your choice of pulled pork or shredded beef, finished with diced red onion and fresh cilantro." Completing the combo is lime wedge for a squeeze of citrus, plus a small side of ancho chile baked beans.

The Price: $4.99 for the combo (480-510 calories). As the "Fish Fridays" of Lent continue, the folks at Taco Bell want remind all the observant omnivores out there that fish isn't the only game in town -- shrimp is fair game, too. And as we all know from "Forrest Gump," shrimp can be prepared in many ways -- you can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, or sauté it. Taco Bell has jumped on the proverbial shrimp boat, and now offers the Pacific Shrimp Taco and Burrito. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: Both the Pacific Shrimp Taco and Pacific Shrimp Burrito are made with soft flour tortillas, and start with "six succulent shrimp, marinated in spices, crisp shredded lettuce, creamy avocado ranch, [and] fiesta salsa." The tortilla of the burrito is larger, allowing for two additional ingredients: a shredded three-cheese blend and crispy red tortilla strips.

The Price: $3.29 for the taco (170 calories); $4.29 for the burrito (460 calories). (Prices may vary at participating locations.)

It's that time of year again, the 40-day Christian season of Lent, a time when fast food restaurants ramp up their seafood menu selections to capitalize on religious dogma -- hell, even KFC plays up their Fish Snacker. The rules of the season mandate that no meat is to be eaten on Fridays -- vegetarians need not change their eating habits -- but to the observant carnivorous fast foodie, this usually means replacing those burgers and fries with fish and chips. Wendy's heeds this call, and has jumped back on the bandwagon this year, offering a Premium Fish Fillet sandwich to fill this religious niche. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: Wendy's Premium Fish Fillet is 100% North Pacific cod breaded with panko crumbs, served in a bun with a leaf of lettuce and tartar sauce (500 calories). A slice of American cheese is optional (for an additional 40 calories).

The Price: $3.99 for the sandwich, plus an extra 30 cents if you want cheese. Add their natural-cut fries to make it a "fish 'n chips" combo with a drink for $5.99. Nathan's and Wienerschnitzel have dominated the fast food chain hot dog arena for years, but now Sonic, America's Drive-In, has stepped up their game with the introduction of four new premium hot dogs -- and you don't even have to leave your car for them. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: The frankfurters in Sonic's new lineup all start with a grilled, all-beef hot dog inside a "soft, warm bakery bun," and are each differentiated by their fixings: the All-American Dog has ketchup, mustard, relish, and chopped raw onions (386 calories); the Chili Cheese Coney is topped with chili and shredded cheddar cheese (420 calories); the New York Dog has spicy mustard, grilled onions, and sauerkraut (352 calories); and the Chicago Dog is topped with a pickle spear, relish, tomatoes, hot peppers, chopped raw onions, celery salt, and mustard, with poppy seeds on the bun (435 calories).

The Price: Each hot dog sells for the introductory price of $1.99, at participating locations.
Now that folks at Domino's Pizza are finished revamping their pizza recipe, they've turned their attention to their chicken offerings, introducing new Boneless Chicken (basically nuggets), and a reboot of their Chicken Wings. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: Domino's new Boneless Chicken is "lightly breaded with savory herbs, made with 100% white breast meat." The revamped wings are "now tastier than ever. Sauced with your choice of Hot, New Sweet Mango Habanero or BBQ Sauce." The Boneless Chicken can be "customized" with those same three sauces for dipping, in addition to the standards, Ranch or Blue Cheese dressing.

The Price: Boneless Chicken comes in 8-, 14-, or 40-piece combos, at $6.99 (410 calories), $10.99 (710 calories), or $29.99 (2030 calories), respectively. The new wings also come in eight, fourteen, or forty, for the same prices. (580-680 calories, 1010-1200 calories, 2890-3420 calories, respectively.)
Continue reading Domino's Pizza: New Chicken Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. Arby's is known for their roast beef sandwiches, and now, like other chains before them, they are jumping on the Angus beef bandwagon -- that breed of cattle whose name has become associated with leaner, tastier, and higher-quality meat. This is good news for the carnivores out there, especially since the Angus beef is sliced and piled into a sandwich with bacon and three types of cheese. Here's how Arby's new Angus Three Cheese & Bacon sandwich rates:

The Claims: The Angus Three Cheese & Bacon sandwich contains USDA Choice Black Angus beef, slow-roasted with a rub of garlic and onions, sliced fresh in the store, and piled onto an Italian roll. The roast beef is draped with slices of Swiss cheese, and topped with shredded cheddar, a Parmesan peppercorn ranch sauce, and thick-cut, pepper-spiced bacon. (660 calories sans condiments)

The Price: $4.99.
Continue reading Arby's Menu: Angus Three Cheese & Bacon Sandwich Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R.
The battle for late-night supremacy now moves to the ice-cream aisle. On the heels of Stephen Colbert's "AmeriCone Dream" comes a new late-night funnyman-inspired ice cream flavor from Ben & Jerry's. That's right; in conjunction with the two-year anniversary of SNL alum Jimmy Fallon taking over Conan O'Brien's NBC post at Late Night, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield have created "Late Night Snack," a premium ice cream complete with Fallon's mug on the lid. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: Ben & Jerry's Late Night Snack is vanilla bean ice cream with a salty caramel swirl and fudge-covered potato chip clusters.
Continue reading Ben & Jerry's 'Late Night Snack' Ice Cream Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R.
Wendy's has quite a reputation to maintain when it announces a new menu item. They have to not only live up to their current marketing slogan, "You know when it's real," by using the freshest ingredients that a national mega-chain can be supplied, but they must also strive to sustain their "recipe of quality" -- a formula which has earned them top honors in Zagat's Fast Food Survey for the past two years. Enter the new Asiago Ranch Chicken Club, the self-proclaimed "bold new take on chicken that's anything but boring." Here's how it rates:

The Claims: The Asiago Ranch Chicken Club sandwich comes in three variations of chicken -- Grilled, Homestyle, or Spicy - each topped with strips of applewood-smoked bacon, a slice of Asiago cheese, ranch dressing, lettuce, and sliced tomatoes. (470-660 calories, depending on the style of chicken)

The Price: $5.19 each.
A few weeks ago, the nation found out about a California class-action lawsuit against Taco Bell, in which it was alleged that the Mexican-inspired fast food empire was serving a "meat mixture" containing less than 35 percent meat. In response, Taco Bell fought back with a very public statement (and full-page ads). Additionally, they rolled out the Quad Steak Burrito (and Quad Steak Quesadilla) to showcase the fact that they do, in fact, serve real USDA Select beef. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: The Quad Steak Burrito is a burrito with four times the amount of steak pieces than the Steak Burrito Supreme, all wrapped in a flour tortilla filled with seasoned rice, "fire-roasted" salsa, reduced-fat sour cream and cheddar cheese. Its quesadilla counterpart has the same ingredients -- with four times the amount of beef than a Steak Quesadilla -- although it's flatter and not as filling as the burrito. (Both contain 610-660 calories, according to a menu poster.)
Continue reading Taco Bell's Quad Steak Burrito and Quesadilla Reviewed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. Years ago, the McDonald's Corporation was a financial backer for the fast-food chain Chipotle, but the two parted ways in part because the Mexican grill's founder, Steve Ells, decided to pursue a philosophy of "Food with Integrity." Nowadays, the Golden Arches has a new association with the word "chipotle," this time as an ingredient in the barbecue sauce for the latest versions of their Angus Third Pounders and Snack Wraps. Here's how they rate:

The Claims: The Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon & Cheese Third Pounder is a 1/3 pound Angus beef patty, topped with American cheese, bacon, pickles, red onions and chipotle BBQ sauce, all served on sesame-seed bun. The Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon & Cheese Snack Wrap is half of an Angus patty (a Sixth Pounder), with all the same toppings, wrapped in a tortilla. (800 and 400 calories, respectively).

The Price: $4.09 for the burger, $1.99 for the wrap (Manhattan, NY; prices may vary depending on location).
Continue reading McDonald's Angus Chipotle BBQ Bacon & Cheese Burger and Snack Wrap Review

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R. You might have noticed that most "new" items at fast-food chains are just rearrangements of the ingredients found in their usual fare, and Pizza Hut is no stranger to this concept. Their latest offering is the Big Dipper -- made from their staple ingredients of crust, tomato sauce, cheese, and toppings. It's the presentation that's new: This pie is sliced to share three or four ways on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Claim: The Big Dipper is a rectangular pizza (about 24"x9"), served with one or more toppings. It is cut into 24 pieces, each about 2" x 4.5", and served with four 3-oz cups of marinara sauce, presumably so that four individuals can have his/her own.
For Burger King's New Year's resolution, The King has proposed to place toppings not on top of their signature flame-broiled burgers but inside them. BK might just be making 2011 the year of the stuffed burger -- kicking things off in January with the kick of jalapeño, complemented by cheddar cheese. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: The Jalapeño & Cheese BK Stuffed Steakhouse Burger is a thick "steakhouse" beef patty infused with bits of chopped jalapeño peppers and morsels of cheddar cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato, and a creamy poblano sauce, all served on a bakery bun.

The Price: $3.99, at participating locations.
Chick-fil-A's "spokes-cows" keep urging us to "Eat mor chikin," (ok, so they can't spell), and now there's yet another daily opportunity to do so: in the morning. The new Spicy Chicken Breakfast Biscuit is now available, so you can get your fried-chicken fix with your morning coffee, and with a spicy kick in the taste buds to get your day started. Here's how it rates:

The Claims: The Spicy Chicken Breakfast Biscuit is spicy chicken breast, breaded with spices and deep-fried, placed inside a buttermilk biscuit. (450 calories, 720 in the meal with tater tots)

The Price: $2.25 for the sandwich (in New Jersey); $4.19 for the meal combo.

It's that time of the year again, when that jolly old fat guy sweeps down chimneys around the world, bearing gifts to those who are not naughty but nice. And for some, it's a Christmas tradition to leave an offering for Santa Claus -- typically a sweet treat of cookies and milk -- in an attempt to bribe him for the really good toys, like Mattel's Sing-A-Ma-Jigs and XBox Kinects, which elves apparently know how to make. This season, unless you're in an area were the local government has banned Happy Meals, like stuffy grinches stealing Christmas, you can follow this Fancy Fast Food mock recipe derived from McDonald's popular kids' meal, for a Christmas treat for Saint Nick made entirely out of fast food items. (Why not? He's obese anyway.)

Although the name Santa Claus comes from the Dutch "Sinter Klass" (an abbreviation of Sint Nikolaas, or Saint Nicholas), it's the German Kris Kringle who's inspired this regional treat: apple strudel. Sure we could just easily buy him McDonald's strudel-like apple pie (or their baked cookies for that matter), but where's the artistic integrity or fun in that?

Ah, another Thanksgiving is here, and this year we have plenty to be thankful for -- most notably the return of the McRib! Yes, America's favorite processed pork rib sandwich is back! No need to wander the different corners of the country looking for it, like in that Simpsons episode where Homer and a band of "Ribheads" go on tour following their favorite pork sandwich's limited regional availability; the McRib is now available nationwide after a hiatus of a long 16 years! Let's celebrate the mechanically-separated Thanksgiving harvest!

Last Thanksgiving, we at the Fancy Fast Food kitchen teamed up with Wired to reshape a corn dog and sides into a traditional "Franksgiving Dinner." This year, we're going to celebrate our beloved national holiday in these United States by being inspired by the last, but certainly not least, state to enter the union, Hawaii.
Continue reading Hawaiian Thanksgiving (Fancy McRib and Filet-O-Fish)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Erik R.
