Are you the kind of customer that stumbles into a restaurant ten minutes before it closes, expecting the same level of service you would get if it were 6.p.m.? In some eateries, you may get that kind of professionalism, but clearly, many restaurant staffers disdain these types of customers -- especially if they endlessly linger, cause waitresses to miss the last bus home and prolong the day of kitchen staff who aren't paid overtime.

Dozens of websites are littered with complaints from fast food and casual restaurant staffers who say that customers show little regard for them when it comes to closing time. Should a restaurant that stays open until 10 p.m. take all comers until they lock the front door? If customers come in at 9:55, should the staff be compelled to stay until those customers devour their last morsel?

Some restaurants try to accommodate their clientele even if it's right at closing time or slightly after. Seating customers after closing time is "possibly the worst policy... that I have seen at a restaurant" according to the Insane Waiter, one of the many blogs that chronicles the travails of the food service industry. The "waiter" told a demanding couple that expected to be seated at 9:55, when the restaurant was closing at 10 p.m, "I'm sorry, but we have people that need to get home to their families, that's why we have posted hours."
Continue reading Closing Time - What Do You Expect Ten Minutes Before?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tomato "Outage" Due to Freeze

Filed under: Fast Food, Food News

Will east-coast consumers need to start hording tomatoes? The situation isn't that dire yet, but the deep freeze that devastated Florida's tomato crop in January is leading to shortages at fast-food chains, supermarkets and restaurants.

The first sign of trouble is coming from Burger King, which has been experiencing "tomato outages." The chain has been running short on tomatoes for about week, leaving some disappointed customers without red ripe tomatoes on their Whoppers.

"There have been some spot outages of tomatoes in the Burger King system as a result of the severe weather conditions that recently affected tomato crops in the Southeastern U.S," Denise Wilson, Burger King's senior analyst of communications, tells ABC News. "We are working with our suppliers and distributors to closely monitor the situation and minimize these outages. Our guests are being notified of temporary outages by signage in the individual restaurants."
Continue reading Tomato "Outage" Due to Freeze

Permalink | Email this | Comments

What Happens When Customer Complaints Are Scams

Nichole McCready a manager at an Outback Steakhouse in Mansfield, Ohio, can handle the many grumblers who complain about bad service and substandard food quality. But what gets her really angry are those patrons who scheme to get free food in ways that may not be illegal, but are certainly manipulative and underhanded.

We feel her pain. Who wouldn't want to kick out the obnoxious customers who try to use expired coupons and then scream and yell when told those coupons are no longer valid?

"I'm happy to do whatever it takes to make the customers happy, but sometimes it just gets so frustrating when we feel like we're getting taking advantage of," the McCready tells Slashfood. "Our company is so worried about losing customers in this economy that no one will put them in their place and tell them no."
Continue reading What Happens When Customer Complaints Are Scams

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bad Fast Food Service? Ever wonder what happens when people find fault with a fast-food joint? Kyla Jones considers herself a reasonable person. As someone who has worked in customer service, she knows what it's like to be on the receiving end of an unwarranted phone tirade. Still, after receiving shoddy treatment from a KFC manager in Columbus, Ohio, she didn't hesitate to call the company's hot line to lodge a complaint.

In 2008, Jones and a companion began eating dinner around 8:30 p.m. at a KFC restaurant that closed at 9. Within ten minutes, they were approached brusquely by a manager and asked to leave without being allowed to finish their meals.

"We're closing in ten minutes, you have to go," Jones recalls him saying. "Do you want a box to put it in?" "He was just really abrupt and acting like us being there was a huge inconvenience," the 48-year-old continues. "Nothing like, 'I hope you're enjoying the food, but our employees need to go.' I sat there like a stunned deer in the headlights."
Continue reading Bad Fast Food Service? Sundance may be the most important independent film festival in the world.

But between the screenings, negotiating deals and celebrity watching, there's not always a lot of time for leisurely meals. There may be plenty of expensive restaurants in Park City and catered parties where guests eat and drink in style, but for busy executives and harried volunteers, food is almost an afterthought.

There are also several fast-food options for attendees on the go that allows them to digest both their food and the festival's latest documentaries. Domino's delivers in Park City and Pizza Hut is close by for those who favor ubiquitous chains.
Continue reading Sundance Fast Food Options

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Subway Customers Can Now Order By Text Message

Can ordering fast food get even faster? In a busy and increasingly impatient world, standing in line or waiting at the drive-thru may eventually be replaced by text-messaging food orders.

Starting today, 31 Subway franchises in Southern California are rolling out a three-to-four-month pilot program where with just a few finger taps, customers will be able to order menu items like the turkey breast and black forest ham sub.

Here's how it works: Participating Subway restaurants in Los Angeles, San Diego, Bakersfield and Santa Barbara will get text message orders and in less time than it takes Jared to do 20 ab crunches, an automatic confirmation message will be sent back to customers, letting them know how long it will take for their meal request to be ready. If all goes right, a customer can then pick up their order without waiting in line.
Continue reading Subway Customers Can Now Order By Text Message

Permalink | Email this | Comments

McNugget Vandal

Hell hath no fury like a McDonald's customer denied their Chicken McNuggets. Just ask Melodi Dushane, who wanted to celebrate the New Year with some fast food at a McDonald's in Toledo, OH.

The East Toledo resident pulled up to the drive-thru the morning of Jan. 1 and was told that there were no McNuggets available, reported the Associated Press. Yet that was enough to enrage the 24-year-old, who reportedly punched her fist through the drive-thru window. Toledo police say that the restaurant's night manager was unable to restrain the out-of-control Dushane, who was treated for injuries at a local hospital and promptly arrested. She pleaded not guilty to a charge of felony vandalism and was released.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Taco Bell Robbery Fugitive

Apparently, a fast food manager's salary wasn't enough. James Ellis Roush, a 30-year-old former shift manager at a Taco Bell in Florence, Ala., is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the restaurant's safe and then fleeing the building. Local police told the Times Daily that it was all captured on security videotape.

But a week later, police are still searching for Roush, whose abandoned car was found on Monday in the parking lot of a nearby Holiday Inn. An arrest warrant has been issued for first-degree theft of property. Police tell AOL that the alleged burglar may be hiding out in Kentucky.

Police say that Roush entered the Taco Bell at 7 a.m. on Dec. 31, opened the safe and took the deposit money left from the night before. Police questioned Roush's girlfriend, who claimed to have last seen him at 3 a.m. the same morning.
Continue reading Taco Bell Robbery Fugitive

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ronald McDonald, Teacher? To many, Ronald McDonald is seen as international symbol of fun and good cheer. But lately he's not so popular among a group of Swedish parents who don't want him or the McDonald's corporation in their children's classrooms.

Reports in Swedish newspapers this week are saying that several schools have been using McDonald's (for possibly as long as four years) branded worksheets to teach fifth grade students English. Apparently, the worksheets contain passages that read like thinly veiled "advertising copy" according to one parent. The passage includes a brief history of the first McDonald's established in London.
Watch out Jared: Taco Bell has a new spokeswoman who's claiming that the chain's lower-calorie Mexican food helped her shed 54 pounds. It's one of the few fast-food promotional campaigns since Subway's Jared commercials to strongly imply that the menu is not only healthier, but can also help customers lose weight.

Taco Bell's new ads feature Christine Dougherty, who says that the restaurant's Fresco menu contributed to her weight loss. Instead of noshing on turkey subs like Jared Fogle, Dougherty has been munching on tacos and burritos. The Fresco menu has a choice of seven items, including a Fresco bean burrito (340 calories) and Fresco crunchy taco (150 calories).

On its Web site, Taco Ball issues a disclaimer that its "drive-thru diet menu" is really not a diet at all.

"As you know, the Drive-Thru Diet menu is not a weight-loss program," Dougherty is quoted as saying. "I didn't want to cut out my fast food, so I started choosing Fresco items from the Drive-Thru Diet(R) menu and making other sensible choices. I reduced my daily calorie and fat intake by 500 calories to 1250 calories a day and after two years, I ended up losing 54 pounds. These results aren't typical, but for me they were fantastic."
Continue reading Taco Bell Christine Commercials

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Burger King UK Showercam Videos

She can't sing or dance and acting skills aren't required. She does look great in a bikini and Burger King is betting that's enough to turn viewers onto both their "showercam" videos and their UK breakfast menus.

In its new online ad, Burger King UK introduces the world to a 20-year old raven-haired, bikini-clad beauty, singing badly off-key as she takes a shower.

With Carl's Jr about to unwrap a new commercial starring Kim Kardashian and Burger King's "first guilt-free showercam," fast-food companies are ramping up the sexual content of their advertising.

"Watch our shower babe shake her bits to the hits" is BK's tagline for the promotion. On one recent morning, "shower babe" (their phrase, not ours) peeled off her bathrobe, turned on the shower and began singing Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time," using the soap bottle as a microphone. (She forgets a line, but Britney did the same thing at the MTV Video Music Awards.)
Continue reading Burger King UK Showercam Videos

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fast-Food Chains Focus on Charitable Giving

Filed under: Business, Fast Food, News

The fast-food industry has long been criticized for possible links to a variety of ills, including childhood obesity and diabetes. But even some of the industry's critics acknowledge its charitable contributions on the local and even global level.

No fast-food company has become more associated with philanthropic and charable work than McDonald's and its Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The group is the umbrella organization for numerous charities that serve children in 52 countries. Founded in 1974, Ronald McDonald House gives free or low-cost lodging to families who have children undergoing medical treatment at hospitals outside their communities.

The lesser known organization , Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, provides pediatric medical and dental care in poor and underserved areas. Last year, Care Mobile helped provide pediatric asthma services to seven Pittsburgh neighborhoods where untreated asthma has been pervasive.
Continue reading Fast-Food Chains Focus on Charitable Giving

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kim Kardashian Stars in Latest Carl's Jr. Commercial

Filed under: Fast Food, Celebrities, Restaurants, News

Carl's Jr. likes its commercials as spicy as its barbecue burgers -- with plenty of sexual suggestion on the side. Paris Hilton, Audrina Patridge (in a bikini on the beach) and Padma Lakshmi have all flaunted themselves in sexy ads for the company's Western Bacon, Spicy Barbecue and Teriyaki Burgers. Who can forget the 2005 ad starring Paris Hilton in leather and high heels, hosing down a Bentley while at the same time devouring a spicy barbecue burger?

Now it's Kim Kardashian's turn. But instead of burgers, she'll be shilling salads. The reality star is promoting Carl's three new entrée salads in a commercial that debuts on Dec. 28. With a "Who Says Salads Can't Be Hot?" campaign tagline, the company is counting on Kardashian's sex appeal to sell what many fast-food fans find decidedly unsexy.

Judging by the behind-the scenes video preview, Kardashian is giving everything she's got to change that image. In the ad, Kardashian is lounging on a bed, eating a Carl's Jr. salad with only her fingers. A far more suggestive shot shows the dark-haired beauty wiping salad dressing from her cleavage with what appears to be an apple slice.
Continue reading Kim Kardashian Stars in Latest Carl's Jr. Commercial

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fast Food Holiday Promotions

Filed under: Holidays, Fast Food, News, Features

It doesn't matter if you've been naughty or nice. Fast-food restaurants (large and small) are celebrating the holidays with a blitz of promotions, deals and new menu items to entice both old and new customers.

Burger King is forgoing the warm and fuzzy holiday spirit for a snarky promotional campaign. Customers can send 20 different holiday greeting cards to close and not-so-close friends, each containing a crisp (or crumpled) dollar bill. Gift recipients are advised to take that dollar and spend it at Burger King for a 1/4-pound double cheeseburger. The cheap gift is being touted by the company with the slogan, "because casual friends don't deserve second-rate gifts."
Continue reading Fast Food Holiday Promotions

Permalink | Email this | Comments

McDonald's Turns from Happy Meal Toys to Video Games

Filed under: Business, Television/Film, Food News, Fast Food

It seems like plastic toys just don't cut it anymore. McDonald's marketing campaign for the new James Cameron film "Avatar" will be decidedly more high tech.

Customers will get what McDonald's calls "cutting-edge digital experiences" that the company hopes will translate into selling more Big Macs this Christmas.

There's been an incredible amount of fan anticipation for the science-fiction movie, in part because of its high-cost special effects and the reputation of Cameron, who hasn't directed a new film in 10 years. (1999's "Titanic" was his last.)

Beginning Dec. 18 (the day of the movie's United States premiere) and ending Jan. 7, every customer that buys a Big Mac will get a "Big Mac Thrill Card" (there are eight different ones) that gives the customer access to three "Avatar"-related online games, according to Molly McKenna, a manager with McDonald's U.S. communications.

But this being a Hollywood blockbuster -- there's more.
Continue reading McDonald's Turns from Happy Meal Toys to Video Games

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sonic Manager Arrested on Charges of Cooking Meth at Restaurant

Apparently an employee was cooking up more than just extra long chili cheese hot dogs at a Sonic restaurant in Missouri -- police say he was cooking up meth.

Police arrived at the Cape Girardeau, Mo., Sonic drive-in, about 115 miles south of Saint Louis, shortly before 2 a.m. on Thursday to discover 27-year-old Dennie L. Bratcher allegedly attempting to whip up a batch of meth in the restaurant, the Associated Press reports.

The shift manager, who lives in Cape Girardeau, has been charged with second-degree burglary and an attempt to manufacture a controlled substance.

"The health department is making them [Sonic employees] throw away everything from sugar packets and straws to food and making them thoroughly clean the facility," Cape Girardeau police Sgt. Jason Selzer told Slashfood on Friday.
Continue reading Sonic Manager Arrested on Charges of Cooking Meth at Restaurant

Permalink | Email this | Comments

A Taco Bell Manager's Guide to Drive-Thru Etiquette

Fast-food customers frequently complain about bad service and long waits at the drive-thru. The easiest people to blame are the restaurant employees who are often characterized as being slow, rude or just plain incompetent.

A 53-year old Taco Bell manager in Maryland (who asked not to be identified so he could speak freely without fear of reprisal from his bosses or offending customers) has an answer for all the complainers: Look in the rear-view mirror.

He says that it's often the customer who delays service with a lack of consideration for both hardworking staff and other patrons idling in the lane behind them.

"I've often wished we had a steam catapult -- like the ones they launch planes off of an aircraft carrier -- to get some of these people moving," he says. But he believes that many problems with slow service could be easily remedied if customers followed a few simple rules.

The last people you would imagine finding at a fast-food restaurant are health-conscious bicyclists. Yet many bike riders are angry that chains like McDonald's and Burger King don't allow them to order food at drive-thru windows.

Most fast-food eateries, large and small, will only serve customers driving a car or motorcycle. They argue it's nothing personal, but allowing cars to co-mingle with pedestrians, motorized wheel chairs and bicycles, is dangerous for everyone.

Bicyclists say they're getting a raw deal. They insist that they have as much right to be served on two wheels as their counterparts do on four. More bikers and less idling cars would also have an environmental benefit, they say.

"It makes no sense," says Wiley Norvell, the communications director for Transportation Alternatives, a New York-based bicycle, pedestrian and mass transit advocacy group. "If it's not dangerous in a bike lane with cars going 35 miles an hour, how can it be dangerous in a parking lot with people traveling less than 10 miles an hour? There are fewer safety issues than on an average street."
Continue reading Bicyclists Fight for Right to Drive-Thru

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Hollywood Power Lunch Downsizes

Filed under: Business, Food News, Fast Food

The idea for the next big reality television hit may have been hatched over lunch at a Popeye's on Hollywood Boulevard.

Howard Stier, a writer and producer used to taking lunch meetings at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, pitched his latest crime-style documentary series over a Popeye's 99-cent lunch -- two pieces of chicken, legs and thighs only.

The economic downturn has hit Tinseltown, with producers like Stier looking to cut corners whenever they can, including downsizing the power lunch to fast-food restaurants.
Continue reading The Hollywood Power Lunch Downsizes

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Drive-Thru Wait Times Getting Longer

Filed under: Business, Food News, Fast Food

One of the primary advantages of eating at a fast-food restaurant is getting fast service.

But you can't get fast service if you're stuck behind 20 other cars at a drive-thru window. Reports of long waits at drive-thrus and parking-lot entrances have slowed down the service at some fast-food eateries.

It's gotten so bad that police have been brought in to direct traffic. In July, at a new Sonic restaurant in Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., an officer was struck and seriously injured by a driver leaving the popular eatery.
Continue reading Drive-Thru Wait Times Getting Longer

Permalink | Email this | Comments
