Nintendo is going to try to convince you to throw out your cookbooks. The game company just cooked up "America's Test Kitchen: Let's Get Cooking," which offers electronic step-by-step instructions for hundreds of recipes from the how-to TV show America's Test Kitchen.

Compatible with the Nintendo DS, DSi and just-released DSi XL, the software has cooks-in-training use its touch-screen technology to choose dishes to prepare, then divvies up tasks among family members or friends. Cartoon chefs talk you through each step of every recipe, and the program includes instructional videos on kitchen basics like chopping an onion and mincing garlic.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

McDonald's Sweet on the $1 Soda

McDonald's fans may be lovin' it even more this summer if the fast-food chain's plan to sell sodas for $1 goes through.

Executives from both McDonald's and the Coca-Cola Co. have been trying to get franchises sweet on the deal at recent regional meetings, according to the Wall Street Journal. Hoping to become the place where people flock to buy beverages, McDonald's wants to offer sodas of any size for only $1.

The low prices will slash soft-drink profits at Golden Arches restaurants, which rely on soda sales as among their biggest moneymakers.

Though McDonald's has tried summer dollar-drink promotions in the past, it's pushing harder for the idea to stick this time around, two franchises told the Journal.
Continue reading McDonald's Sweet on the $1 Soda

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Deen Brothers Magazine Gets People Cooking at Home

The sons of celebrity chef Paula Deen hope their new magazine will inspire a lot of good old-fashioned home cooking.

The quarterly created by Jamie and Bobby Deen and published by Hoffman Media just launched its first issue -- which features almost 100 recipes. And while Deen Bros. Good Cooking aims to get men into the kitchen, it also wants to bring families together around the dinner table.

"The recession can have some positive effects," Jamie Deen, 42, told Slashfood. "It's going to force people to not go out and eat fast food. We think eating at home is one of the first changes. Get everybody's feet back under the same table."

In that vein, the magazine he co-founded with his brother Bobby, 39, offers a series of simple recipes made with affordable, easy-to-find ingredients - like cheese and beer dip, Creole shrimp, pesto sirloin steak, shrimp and mushroom pasta, tilapia piccata and a grilled banana dessert.

"We're just showing people easy ways to cook good food that's good for you," Deen said. "We keep it real simple."
Continue reading Deen Brothers Magazine Gets People Cooking at Home

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paula Deen's Sons Create A Food Magazine for Guys

Hey, y'all, listen up! There's a new food magazine just for you fellas, created by none other than Paula Deen's boys.

The frosted blond TV chef's two sons, Jamie and Bobby, have launched their own quarterly magazine called Deen Bros. Good Cooking. Target audience? Men.

Hoffman Media, which already puts out the bimonthly Cooking with Paula Deen, will be the publisher for the 63-year-old Food Network host's boys, too. President and CEO Phyllis Hoffman tells Slashfood that Deen Bros. will aim to attract a "dual audience" of male and female readers, but will offer "light, easy recipes" that will likely "have strong appeal with men."

Bobby and Jamie Deen, who are 39 and 42, have made appearances on their mother's various Food Network shows over the years and hosted one themselves in 2006 called Road Tasted. When they're not in the public eye, the Deen brothers are in Savannah, Ga., running their mom's now-famous restaurant, The Lady and Sons.
Continue reading Paula Deen's Sons Create A Food Magazine for Guys

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bobby Flay Settles Up For $800K

Celebrity chef Bobby Flay will throw down $800,000 to restaurant workers who claim they were swindled out of wages and tips.

The TV star denies any wrongdoing in the case but said in court documents that he would rather pay a settlement than go to trial.

The money will be served up to waitstaff, bartenders, bussers and runners who worked at three of Flay's New York City restaurants -- Mesa Grill, Bar Americain and the now-closed Bolo -- between January 2003 and September 2009.
Continue reading Bobby Flay Settles Up For $800K

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Gospel According to Tom: Colicchio's New Cookbook

Celebrity chef Tom Colicchio is whipping up a new cookbook his publisher promises will cover "everything he believes is important about food."

The Top Chef judge and founder of Craft restaurants finalized the deal with Artisan Books last week.

The as-yet-unnamed project, due out in the fall of 2011, is still in "the very early, early stages," Artisan's executive director of publicity, Amy Corley, tells Slashfood.

"It's going to be very different from anything he's ever done," says Corley. "There will be full color throughout. Chef Colicchio is working with his family on this book and they're going to be involved in every way."

Colicchio's cookbook will follow tradition in its offering of new recipes, techniques and tips, but it will also put forth Colicchio's set of philosophies and beliefs about cooking and food -- a sort of gospel according to Tom.
Continue reading The Gospel According to Tom: Colicchio's New Cookbook

Permalink | Email this | Comments

McDonald's New Smoothies Compete for Attention at the Olympics

Filed under: Fast Food, New Products

The Golden Arches are going for the gold with McDonald's new fruit smoothies, which the company will serve in its Olympic restaurants in Canada at the Winter Games.

The fast-food giant unveiled its Strawberry Banana and Wild Berry Real Fruit Smoothies on Thursday at the Olympic media center in Vancouver, Nations Restaurant News reported.
McDonald's executives showed off the new line of beverages with gold medalists Cassie Campbell, a Canadian hockey player; Shawn Johnson, an American gymnast; Picabo Street, a skier for the U.S.; and German ice skater Katarina Witt.

The two flavors of smoothies will be offered in McDonald's three Olympic restaurants in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, during the Winter Games' run for the next two weeks.
Continue reading McDonald's New Smoothies Compete for Attention at the Olympics

Permalink | Email this | Comments

iPhone-Inspired Touch-Screen Vending Machines

Want a Snickers? There's an app for that.

The newest vending machines are interactive, utilizing iPhone technology touch screens and replicating iPhone apps. Instead of seeing physical packages of candy and other snacks, you get virtual images, the Washington Post reported.

When customers press one of the digital images, the animated snack gets larger and slowly rotates to reveal its ingredients and nutritional stats.

Kraft Foods' Diji-Touch was among the cutting-edge vending machines on display on Capitol Hill, where the National Automated Merchandising Association has been lobbying for jobs this week. Unemployment is a concern for the trade group because the country's widespread layoffs mean there are fewer office workers to buy snacks.
Continue reading iPhone-Inspired Touch-Screen Vending Machines

Permalink | Email this | Comments

U.S. Debates Whether to Lift Ban on Scottish Haggis

The U.S. government is reconsidering its ban on Scotland's national dish haggis.

The Department of Agriculture has shot down rumors that the sausage - made by rolling the cooked innards of a sheep (its heart, liver and lungs) in oats and pepper, then stuffing it in cow's intestine and boiling it - will be allowed in the United States any time soon.

The Scottish delicacy has been barred from this country since the late '80s mad cow outbreak in the U.K.

At the request of Scottish officials, the USDA is reviewing the risks of the dish and the ban on it, according to The Associated Press.

USDA spokeswoman Lindsay Cole issued a statement saying reports that the ban will be lifted are incorrect and though the latest science is being examined, no timetable has been set for a decision.
Continue reading U.S. Debates Whether to Lift Ban on Scottish Haggis

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Restaurants Battle Over Who Was "Unhealthy" First

An Arizona restaurateur is suing the owners of an eatery in Florida, accusing them of stealing his idea for a heart-attack-inducing menu.

In the federal lawsuit, Heart Attack Grill owner Jon Basso contends that the pair behind Heart Stoppers Sports Grill in Delray Beach took his concept for a restaurant with unhealthy, cholesterol-raising fare, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

"Heart Attack Grill is the originator of the medically themed hamburger grill and restaurant," the paper quoted Basso's lawyer, Robert Kain, as saying. "It sells high-calorie food products and we have had very extensive media coverage, including numerous shows on the Travel Channel and the Food Network."
Continue reading Restaurants Battle Over Who Was "Unhealthy" First

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Russian Soft Drinks with Stalin's Portrait Anger Veterans

Veterans are incensed over the release in Russia of soda bearing pictures of dictator Josef Stalin and other World War II leaders.

The soft drinks will hit store shelves in early February, Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported this week. They were produced at a beverage plant in Volgograd, Russia, to commemorate the 67th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad -- Volgograd's name before the fall of the Soviet regime.

The sodas will be re-released in time for end-of-war Victory Day festivities on May 9.

The three drinks have portraits on them of Stalin, Marshal Gregory Zhukov and Marshal Konstantin Rokossovksy, framed by the words "Our cause is right - We have triumphed."

About 30 million people perished during Stalin's oppressive reign.
Continue reading Russian Soft Drinks with Stalin's Portrait Anger Veterans

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The 10 Hottest Men in the Food Industry

McDonald's is building its Roman Empire.

In Rome, the fast food giant introduced a new "McItaly" line of burgers made entirely with Italian ingredients, ABC News reported Tuesday.

Italy's Agriculture Minister, Luca Zaia, donned a McDonald's apron to help prepare the new fast-food fare, which includes two sandwiches and a salad.

One of the burgers has artichoke spread, Asiago cheese and lettuce -- all produced in Italy along with the ground beef and bread.
Continue reading Buon Appetito: McDonald's New 'McItaly' Burgers

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bob Evans' New 'Fit from the Farm' Menu Offers Healthier Options

When you think of Bob Evans restaurants, you probably think of sausages and grits, not yogurt and oatmeal.

But now the chain is the latest to offer healthier food with a new menu called Fit from the Farm.

None of the items have more than 650 calories and 750 milligrams of sodium, Nation's Restaurant News reported.

Each choice has 35 percent or fewer total calories from fat and fewer than 10 percent of total calories from saturated fat, and none of the food contains trans fat. Calorie information is posted next to each menu item.
Continue reading Bob Evans' New 'Fit from the Farm' Menu Offers Healthier Options

Permalink | Email this | Comments

America's Fattest City Makes the 'Naked Chef' Weep

"Naked Chef" Jamie Oliver broke down and cried when many residents of the fattest city in America shunned his efforts to transform them into healthy eaters.

The TV star got the cold shoulder from people in Huntington, West Virginia, who didn't hide the fact that they wanted nothing to do with the crusade he's on in his new show Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, the U.K.'s Daily Mail reports.

More than half the residents in Huntington are obese, but that doesn't mean they were receptive to help or advice from the British celebrity chef about how to eat better. Many refused to listen or participate during filming of the series.
Continue reading America's Fattest City Makes the 'Naked Chef' Weep

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Carhops "Skate" Through Training at New Sonic Drive-In

Filed under: Fast Food, Restaurants, News

They weren't skating on thin ice, but the carhops at a new Southern California Sonic Drive-In were definitely skating.

Employees of the soon-to-open restaurant in Duarte, Calif., have been training for the job on roller skates, as they'll be tasked with zipping up to customers' car windows on wheels carrying trays of food and drinks.

Sonic has set itself apart from other fast-food chains with its 1950s theme. Key to its business are its skating carhops.

"It's a fun job," Sonic franchising partner Steve Jones told Slashfood. The latest fast food "ick factor" isn't in the burgers or fries -- it's in the soda.

A group of microbiologists at Virginia's Hollins University found alarming levels of bacteria, possibly from feces, in fast-food soda fountains.

A scary 48 percent of machine beverages tested contained coliform bacteria - which can originate in fecal matter, the International Journal of Food Microbiology study showed. Even more worrying: Most of the bacteria identified were resistant to antibiotics.

"Coliform bacteria was detected in 48 percent of the beverages," the team's abstract states. "More than 11 percent of the beverages analyzed contained Escherichia coli [E. coli]."
