Anything, that is, except a dish that seems suitable for dinner. Why is it that I can easily find a recipe for chestnut-armagnac souffle (doesn't that sound good?), but not one thing that I feel like eating or cooking on a given night? I usually just end up falling back on old favorites, so I thought I'd share list some here, just in case anyone out there has the same problem as I do. Chances are that many of our default dishes overlap, but maybe if everyone shares some, we'll get some new dishes circulating...

1. Mario Batali's pollo al vino cotto -- The second tastiest chicken dish a person can prepare in a home kitchen (the first is chicken with figs from the Silver Palate Cookbook, but it takes some advance planning)

2. Chicken Caesar salad -- Healthy, plus it's easy to throw in other vegetables that you have laying around

3. Black bean soup -- I use my mom's recipe, but here's a really quick one from Epicurious

4. Roasted chicken -- Carrots, onion, potatoes, rosemary, thyme, lemon, salt, pepper.

5. Roasted vegetable chopped salad with reduced balsamic vinaigrette -- I roast any vegetables I can find at 400 for 30 minutes, then chop them up, toss them with chopped radicchio and chicken if available, and drizzle with a reduced balsamic dressing.

6. Soba noodle salad -- This is always easier than I think it's going to be, and just as refreshing. Here's a beautiful one from Simple Recipes to get you started

7. Lemon fish -- Any piece of any white fish doused in lemon juice, salt and pepper, usually accompanied by a baked potato

8. Sushi take-out -- If worst comes to worst, and I really can't bring myself to cook, this is my plan.

Now, your turn! Please share your default dinner menus!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

S'mores Recipes - Slashfood Ate (8)

Filed under: Snacks, Dessert, Slashfood Ate, Thanksgiving, Fall
My family used to have Thanksgiving dinner with just me, my parents, and my two younger brothers. We'd eat roasted chicken (since 5 is too few for a turkey) and then toast marshmallows in the fireplace for dessert. I always crave s'mores around Thanksgiving as a result, and I've been trolling the web for recipes/articles about this delicious snack. Here are a few of the best:

1. I'll say that again: a four-course CHOCOLATE dinner.

Depending on your tastes, the idea of a chocolate dinner might have you drooling over your keyboard. Or for those lacking a sweet tooth, it might have you fighting back up even less pleasant bodily fluids. I'll admit that my pre-dinner feelings were somewhere in between. When I first signed up to go, I was extremely excited. But as the night approached, I began to have reservations (Ugh, do I really have to get on the subway in the rain? Isn't this meal going to make me sick?). Yet I pulled myself and my umbrella together, and made a trek that turned out to be well worth it.

The menu, composed by Gaby executive chef Vincent Menager and L'Atelier du Chocolat chocolatier Eric Girerd featured both savory and sweet chocolate-filled dishes. Not only was I treated to some amazing food (I'll give full deets after the jump), but also some sweet tips for incorporating chocolate into my own cooking.
Continue reading Chocolate for Dinner (and Appetizer and Dessert)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Make Weekend Breakfasts Easier - Tip of the Day

Filed under: Parties, Breakfast, Baking, Tip of the Day
By the time you lug yourself out of bed at 11 a.m. on a Sunday, do you really want to spend another 30 minutes prepping brunch before you start cooking? I headed to CT with friends, and we had pancakes BOTH mornings. Sunday morning, I tasted the most delicious blueberry pancakes that you can imagine -- the taste and fluffiness were beyond what I thought a pancake could achieve. So I was already on a pancake high when I returned to the internet Sunday night to find TWO WHOLE blog posts on fruit pancakes. It made me even more excited to start experimenting with these types of recipes at home. Here are some from around the web that look particularly tasty:

1. Apple Pancakes from Smitten Kitchen

2. How to add fruit to pancakes post from Baking Bites

3. Whole-wheat pumpkin pancakes from Pinch My Salt (not a fruit, but so mouth-watering!)

4. Pineapple orange pancakes from All Recipes

5. Oven pear pancake from Real Simple

6. Vegan blueberry pancakes from Epicurious

7. Oatmeal raspberry pancakes with berry coulis from My Recipes

8. Spiced banana pancakes from Post Punk Kitchen

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tip of the Day: Use a feed reader to organize your recipes

Filed under: On the Blogs, Tip of the Day
Blogs are a great resource for finding recipes, but unless you print out every post you like, it's difficult to keep track of dishes that you want to try! I tend to presume that cottage cheese just grows on supermarket shelves, for example, or that making vanilla requires complex machinery. So while it may be more convenient to throw these items into your cart than to cultivate them in your own kitchen, try making any of these eight treats at home the next time you're feeling bold.

But it takes a true fall-lover to embrace the all of the candies of fall as well. You have to take the candy corn with the caramel apples, the liquorice with the maple sugar candy. Liquorice it seems, is a pretty divisive candy. If you hate it, you hate it. I love it, and here are some yummy variations that I've spotted across the web.

Liquorice Root Tea from Teaviews

Liquorice Altoids, reviewed by Candy Addict

Liquorice Caramels from the Vermont Country Store

Liquorice Pudding from Epicurious

Very Salty Liquorices from Dutch Sweets

Liqource Cupcakes from Apple & Spice

Liquorice Ice Cream from Chow

Chocolate Licorice from Chocolate Heaven

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tip of the Day: Menus as Art

Filed under: Restaurants, Tip of the Day
Ever wish you could take home more than a doggy-bag from your favorite restaurant? I've always loved the stuff, and I remember begging my mom to bring some home from the supermarket every fall when I was younger. Now that I can get it on my own and drink as much as I want (that's right, mom: sometimes I drink juice not milk), I love it even more. It's just so thick and delicious -- perfect in a cold, tall glass on an autumn afternoon, but also for cooking, mulling, and even baking! Here are some innovative ways to incorporate this fall treat into your daily diet...

Apple cider chicken -- One of my favorite fall recipes from Eating Well

Martha Stewart's spiced apple cider from Martha Stewart

Apple butter from 101 Cookbooks

Mulled apple cider sorbet from Epicurious

Warm autumn punch from All Recipes

Garden salad with apple cider vinaigrette from the Food Network

Apple walnut cake with apple cider glaze from Big Oven

Cider-glazed root vegetables from the Washington Post

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Slashfood 8 (Ate): Bacon on the brain

Filed under: Pork, Trends, Slashfood Ate
Maybe you've noticed it too -- the absurd fascination with everything (and anything!) bacon. Over the past few months, I've seen the most ridiculous items (food and non-food) constructed with bacon, and honestly, I don't really know what to make of it. I obviously forward all of the links to my boyfriend, who is known for responding to all questions posed to him with a simple: bacon. (How was your day, honey? Bacon.) But on the other hand, I feel kind of nauseated by the idea of bacon underwear. Here's a round-up of some of the most outrageous, judge for yourself.

Bacon Tiara from Serious Eats

Bacon Cinnamon Rolls, also from Serious Eats

Meat Gadgets from Gizmodo (questionable whether there's bacon in there, but strange all the same...)

French Toast and Bacon Sandwich from Baking Bites (actually, yum)

Bacon Obama logo from us!
