Perhaps to prove that what's goes around really does come around, a Williamsburg, Brooklyn delivery man has taken to the blogosphere to broadcast all the bad tippers he comes in contact with. His blog, 15%, chronicles the tight purse strings tendencies of certain customers, in an effort to publicly shame their stinginess. Customer addresses have now been removed, due to Tumblr's request, reports Gawker.com.
The mastermind behind the blog is Larry Fox, a 20-year-old designer and developer. He told Gothamist that the reason for starting his blog was that he "just got tired of all these big companies, these TV shows and movie sets giving us two or three dollar tips on a $90 order." Fox is not only broadcasting bad tippers, but also answering readers' questions. Some highlights (also submitted by other delivery men):
- "Went out into a Level Two Snow Emergency (We are not even supposed to be delivering, but dedication wins out over common sense) And got a whopping 0.50 tip from the guy."
- "Lorimer St. tipped me one dollar to bring him a sandwich during a hail/rain/thunder storm....I hate you."
- "Manhattan Ave. greenpoint took you 8 minutes exactly to come downstairs after two phonecalls (14 stairs in a standard american stairwell) because you don't have a functional buzzer like everyone else in brooklyn."
- "corner of meserole ave. end of delivery zone - about 23 blocks from my restaurant for 4 slices of pie during prime dinnertime. two bucks for well over a mile. thanks for the two bucks to bust my ass because you didn't specify your cross-street as meserole ave from street bro. not on deck. i dropped your food a few times. whoops."

And how exactly did he know that this person was going to be a bad tipper before he had completed the delivery?
I'm all for providing fair tips (or better yet, making restaurants pay a reasonable wage to begin with) - but this guy sounds like a real a-hole.

Anyone who orders in a snowstorm is a punk. Drive out to the restaurant and pick it up yourself, or don't bother at all! Why make someone risk their life to bring you your food?
People who don't tip are dirt bags. Now, I will excuse people who aren't familiar with tipping customs or anything like that. My mother always took me for haircuts and never tipped the stylists. I continued doing this when I got haircuts. None of these idiots who cut my hair ever told me it was customary to tip! Not one! They would always make nasty comments, but had they said something like, or implied that tipping was appreciated or the norm, I would have done so. It took me years to figure this out. I don't know for sure if my mom was just cheap or if it wasn't normal back home to tip hair cutters, but I just didn't know any better. I mean, it just tells you how ignorant the people are in some of these service industries.
For every cheapskate, there is the person who generously over tips. I mean, it works out. I never assumed I was going to earn more than minimum wage in that job. There are a lot of servers who expect it though, and that is wrong. You definitely can make a lot of money off of tips. I'm more bothered by people who steal your tip money, namely sometimes secretaries and the employee's children. Sometimes, I will go to a place that regularly tips well and loves my service, but then find that I get tipped zero when I get paid by some teenage girl. Don't do that! Make sure you call to ensure the driver got tipped! You will always have cheapskates who don't tip, and often times, they are the biggest cheaters and complainers.
I absolutely think making a delivery driver go out to deliver one sandwich or a drink is inefficient and a total offense. If you can't drive out to pick up your lunch or dinner, you are a loser.
A lot of companies are also stealing from their drivers when it comes to gas money. Some will add a delivery charge and then keep that money! That is criminal! Pay their gas or don't bother having delivery! Seriously! Oh wait, then they will find out how stupid it is, economically, to have delivery!

Not everyone is going to tip, and people like me resent having people who are paid to do a job stick out their hand for more when they're done. Add it to your price or shut up. That said, the jobs that I know are paying less and counting on tips to make minimum wage, I am happy to tip. I tip more with good service, and if the service is really atrocious I will live a nickel and speak to the manager. But I try to stay around the 20% range. Hair dressers, nail techs, etc. especially those who own their own shop? SHUT UP. Seriously. You are charging too much to begin with. Your services and the cheap supplies are NOT worth $60/hour to begin with, much less expecting me to tip you on top of it.
Guarantee one thing: anybody he called out is going to definitely stop tipping everyone at that store just because they don't know who it was. This guy is a douchebag.

Tipping is supposed to show the satisfaction that someone experiences from your performance. It is not a required CHARGE. Some people are going to tip, some won't. If you're unhappy with the ups and downs of tipping, find another job.
But I feel that his anger is misplaced. The root of the problem is that employers do not pay a decent wage to people in the service industry. They pay a substandard wage and then require the service person to make up the difference in tips. So, in addition to a food charge (which is high to begin with), the patrons are also expected to pay the additional wages. I believe that employers should pay livable and just wages to their workers for the work they do. That includes gas money and car usage payments for delivery people using their own cars. Wear and tear on the car is a big deal as is the risk of tickets, accidents, etc. And the one that should be responsible for making sure the employee is well-compensated is the EMPLOYER not the PATRON.
I tip, generally at least 15%, but it is according to the service I receive, not the total of my bill.

I wonder, however, if this system would go over well in America, since I imagine those receiving tips in cash probably do not claim them for tax purposes. I happen to tip 20% for food service and $1 per drink if at a bar. If I don't think I can afford a decent tip, I won't eat out. My guess is many who do not tip are people who eat out ALL THE TIME, several times a month, and feel they can't afford it. Or they are people who are just really cheap, stingy, and selfish. Its become a part of our culture. Look at what's going on in government. It's now considered OKAY to be selfish in every regard!

Wrong. Europe is a very large geographical area consisting of dozens of countries and the customs vary a lot between, say, Spain, Germany and Finland.
Here in Finland tipping is generally not expected at all. Not in restaurants, not in a taxi (driving a taxi is easily a middle or even good income job here by the way), not in a pub, not at a hair dresser and so on. You can tip in a restaurant if you want, but you won't get grumpy looks if you don't.
