Please say this isn't the beginning of the end for cake pops.
Starbucks, America's largest coffee retailer, has begun serving cake pops -- and it's got the baking community up in arms. The pops are made by crumbling fresh cake and mixing the crumbs with frosting, then forming them into a ball and placing them on a stick. To make them pretty (and keep them fresh), they're dipped into a colorful candy coating.
The little pops have caught on like wildfire. (Cake that's portable, adorable, and has fewer calories than a whole slice? Sweet!) They're quickly overtaking cupcakes as the "must-have" item for baby showers, weddings, and birthday celebrations. And that's what has the folks over at Honest Cooking are worried. They know that anything that shows up at Starbucks is likely to experience backlash (and the pops they're serving up are no great shakes), and they don't want their favorite treat to meet that fate.
In an attempt to keep the pops in good favor, they've posted a killer recipe for Lemon Cream Cheese Cake Pops.

Well, it does but it's such a small difference it doesn't matter. But here are some secrets
that do actually work. First off, use a thin metal pot..the shorter the distance between the heat source & the water, the faster it will heat. Thick pots slow this down. Use a pot that matches the size of the burner...a small pot on a large burner will expose part of your heat source and increase your utility bill for nothing. Too small of a burner, and it will take longer to boil.
Water is a refrigerant & it cools itself as it evaporates, so cover the pot with a tight lid. When you see steam coming out around the edge, it's boiling. Use only enough water for your recipe.
The more water you have in the pot, the longer it will take to boil... A measuring cup is handy ...most recipes call-out how much water to use......Hey, save some money & time & eat well!!!...Alfie-

The title of the article says Starbucks might "kill" the cakepop, but the article only alludes to possible backlash, but not the who, what, when, where or why, the "W's" of journalism.....

The cake pop might start a new trend....or the cupcake may suffer a backlash. Is that what the writer is trying to imply? Silly headline trying to grab readers. These headlines often lead to disappointing "news" stories.

Essentially, the bakers at Honest Cooking believe there will be a backlash against their own product because Starbucks have now come up with something that is more generally known and easier to obtain, so their product (Honest Cooking) may not be seen as a specialty item. At least that is what I got from reading the last portion of the article. And apparently, the cake pops at Honest Cooking are not that great. I hope that helps.

The overexposure and obsession with a new food trend can quickly turn it from hip and current to passé and cheesy. With their new home at a coffee chain that many people already love to hate, will 2011 be the year of the death of the cake pop trend? Only time will tell I guess."
That's from clicking the link to the recipe for the Lemon Cream Cheese Cake Pops, although I already knew what kind of "backlash" they were talking about because I don't need writers to spell everything out for me, though apparently I'm one of the few.

So, If people who never tasted a cake pop in their life, tasted Starbucks cake pops and thought them bland and tasteless then they might think this is what all cake pops tasted like and not buy any anywhere. Which is why the Honest Cooking folks gave a "good" recipe so everyone wouldn't think they all taste like Starbucks cake pops. http://newsy1.wordpress.com
