Which Food is Most Likely to Make You Sick?

Anyone who has ever tangled with food poisoning knows it's nothing to fool around with. But it's often difficult to nail down what, exactly, made you sick.

A new report from the University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute points the finger in one clear direction: poultry. Birds contaminated with Campylobacter bacteria is the food-pathogen combination that causes the highest number of illnesses in the U.S. Just how many people fall victim? More than 600,000 people a year.

The top five illness-causing pathogens -- Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, Toxoplasma gondii and norovirus -- cause $12.7 billion in economic losses each year, with the top 10 pathogen-food combinations accounting for more than $8 billion a year, according to the report. (Lost productivity, medical care and serious complications or chronic disabilities associated with the illness are all factored together to come up with these figures.)

So enjoy your grilled chicken this summer -- just invest in a meat thermometer and make sure you see 165 degrees on it before you begin your feast.

I caught campylobacter once a few years ago from a bucket of fried chicken that was undercooked; I didn't realize that it was undercooked until it was too late--I had already been eating it when I saw that the juices were a tinge of pink. Hoping that I would get lucky and not get sick, I stopped eating it and re-cooked the rest of it in the oven.

Unfortunately, within 24 hours I got deathly ill, and let me tell you, this is one nasty bacterial infection! Let's just say that the best way to understand how it feels is to imagine the worst stomach "flu" (I know there is no such thing, that it's usually a norovirus that causes that type of illness) that you've EVER had your entire life, then multiply that horrible feeling times 20. I wouldn't wish this illness on my own worst enemy!

Food consisting of dead bodies is not the way to good health and peace. Get away from blood foods. Stop eating animal products like milk, and eggs. There are VEGETARIAN alternatives which are cleaner and healthier and taste better than dead animals !!!

For God's sake face the facts and everyone GO CARNIVORIAN . You shall never be healthy on a plant based diet. Food consisting of dead plants is not the way to good health and peace. Get away from organic foods. Stop eating plant products like lettuce, and carrots. There are CARNIVORIAN alternatives which are cleaner and healthier and taste better than dead plants !!!

Just like religion and politics it is a personal position and not to be discussed on web pages, or at parties or at any gathering of people. Keep your opinions to yourself. Since you can't do that, then this is what I say to you, you are an idiot, vegans are the most unhealthy of people on the face of the earth, they look unhealthy, nasty stuff and most of them smell terrible from all those nasty odiferous vegetables, so unless you can understand the position of other people, keep your comments to yourself. My lifestyle is not yours and never will be, but you have the right to live your lifestyle the way you want, too bad you won't be around much longer.

Vegans are healthier and care enough for other human beings and for voiceless animals to speak up and let them know the truth about harmful diets which contain meat. Your meat industry and dairy industry will never tell you the truth. The strongest animals on earth are vegan. The longest lived animals on earth are vegan. Vegetarianism is not just veggies. Go to Happycow.net and find the nearest vegetarian restrauant and try it. You will be surprised how good and healthy it is for you. We care, and we look forward to a world of true civilization. Not a human race that lives off blood foods of dead or alive animals.

As for the vegetarian/vegan thing... well, I eat what my body tells me to, and my body tells me I need the nutrients in meats the most. Sorry if that offends you, but your meal was just as much a living thing. Trees and plants are *alive*. If they're dead plants, you're not eating them; they're rotten much like an animal decays. Plants may not have intelligence as we understand it, but they still live and die - and comunicate with each other, in some cases. But I don't tell you how to live your life, so you shouldn't tell me how to live mine either.

It's like our hospitals....people end up with nasty infections from going to the hospital. Is it THAT hard to keep things clean? Everything that comes in contact with food, anywhere in the process, should be clean. It's probably just cheaper to let it go. So what if some people get sick, and some people die? At least it's not cutting into anyone's profits. That's the bottom line, right?

Offering children dead animals for their meal is uncivilized and cruel. Go to HappyCow.net and find the nearest vegetarian restaurant and go learn. Happy evolution...There is hope.

Example of progress is the fact that England has had a law tfor allmost 300 years hat Vegetarian meals must be offered in all public schools, hospitals and military. The idea of human beings being vegan for health and moral reasons has been happening for centuries. But the harmful meat industry has pushed upon generations of Americans falsehoods that milk and meat and chicken and fish is necessary for protein and strength. That is a lie and they know it. The billions of suffering animals under horrid farm raising conditions is deplorable and must stop if we are to survive as civilizaed human being and stop the type of cancers which stem from meat diets.

I am doing my part to meet my God's wishes by using those teeth to their intended purpose. I say we go out and kill something. We let the lower forms of life live off the dead decaying plant matter and chow down on a nice thick red blooded steak.

It is now well known that the evolution of man from early primates was closely associated with the fact that certain early apes ate monkey for protein. They even today rip the arms and legs off monkeys to satisfy the nutritional needs of their large brains. The direct result of this led to man's large brain. The record is clear that only the meat eating branches of the ape family evolved into intelligent later primates showing the falacy in the vegan diet argument. Again I say we just need to keep killing and eating good old meat if we want to remain smart. Just look at the driving and school records of all these whimpy vegans . We should remove them from the planet to make room for more cows.

I think your theory is correct. The only lucid comments on this article have been from readers who consume meat. Good call.
I've also noticed that a lack of meat in the diet of readers in here results in a form of militancy to the point that they feel they have a duty to tell others how to live their lives and what to put into their and their children's bodies.

If God told Peter after lowering a sheet that had all manner of animals on it to slay and eat instead of lowering a sheet with all manner of fruits and vegetables, it looks like God wants people to eat meat.

But it will kill the bacteria and keep you from needing to use the toilet all the time. Eating hot peppers and hot sauce on the food may be the reason why people in foreign countries aren't bothered by the water that has a bit of bacteria in it.
