This Omelet Recipe Is Written On the Egg Itself

Yes, it's a gimmick. But it's a pretty cool one. Who wouldn't like an omelet recipe printed right on their egg? (Never mind that almost everyone knows how to make an omelet.) What's cool here is that artist Dnewman came up with a clever use for the Egg-Bot, a 3D printer that can "draw on spherical or egg-shaped objects from the size of a ping pong ball to that of a small grapefruit." But as one commenter over at Boing Boing points out: "Why print the recipe for two servings on one egg?"

If this idea of printing recipes, advertisements, etc. (a brilliant marketing tool!) ever takes off, I am sure they will do their printing on unfertilized eggs only. Jeeez! Gime me a break already, it's Sunday!!!! -gregg in Sarasota, FL

The egg shell is permiable so that a living embyro "can" breathe and yes the market eggs are unfertilized. Even though a raw egg can last quite awhile, I don't recommend using them more than a week old. The recipe for a pro omlet is: Crack three eggs into a bowl. Add one teaspoon of cream. Beat with wisk to add air. Add a butter pat to a hot non-stick fry pan, pour in the eggs. Flip omlet to cook other side..Serve...Al-

And as far as thre problem with "recipe for 2 servings on one egg"... LOL... ever seen a ONE egg omelete and I guess MOST of us can at least divide by two... AND if all the eggs in the container have the same recipe printed on them this idea is a winner....
People worry way too much about moronoc stuff that doesn't matter... it's a cool idea and when safely and responsibly it's an added consumer benefit....

It's not about REALLY printing recipes on eggs, it's not about selling advertisements to egg companies, or even how many eggs it takes to make a stupid omelet.

The guy invented a 3D printer that prints on round objects and came up with a really CLEVER way to demonstrate it. That's pretty cool, and apparently a lot more intelligent then sitting around on a Sunday morning anonymously criticizing others. I surely hope there are more people in the world like him than there are like all of you.

5-01-2011 @3:09PM Lara said... Jennifer, you need to think a little deeper on this, not just take what you read at face value. Most inventors will present their invention in some practicial way, demonstrating a profitable use for their product. That plants ideas and creates some type of buzz to make their invention more marketable. The printing on the egg was no accident, it was part of a plan. I can already see eggs coming with decorations on them - Hello Kitty eggs anyone?

Even the fact that AOL points to this 'article' is very telling. Have you ever heard of stereolithography? It blows this spherical printing concept right out of the water, and has been around for decades.

The bottom line is that this spherical printing will come around to us as ads where we don't need to see ads, if it's practical in its application. Time will tell.
