Despite its coffee-centric menu, Starbucks is now the third largest restaurant chain in terms of domestic sales, according to Technomic's listing of America's top 500 restaurant chains in total 2010 U.S. sales. Completing the trifecta is McDonald's in the number one spot, followed by Subway at number two. USA Today explains that Starbucks' rise to the top signifies a shift in the American palate. For decades, McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's dominated the top three, and all served a similar hamburger-focused menu. Now, within the new top three, only McDonald's serves burgers. Overall, the top 500 chains reported a 1.8% sales growth in 2010, with total estimated sales of $234 billion.
Here's the Top 5 list:
1. McDonald's
2. Subway
3. Starbucks
4. Burger King
5. Wendy's

As is the case with those who give their patronage to specialty shops they have no common sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that you are paying upward of 1000% over cost at any specialty shop.
I live in the tourist trap of tourist traps of the state of Wisconsin. What cost the venders $1 costs you $10 or more depending on the markup, so forth and so on. Damn seasonal residents are the ones responsible for the high cost of living in counties, states, etc, whose economies are tourism based .

I eat healthy 90 percent of the time, but every once and awhile I like to tear into a thick and juicy burger and fries. People who eat their all the time and gain weight from it are idiots. You have to make the decision to go to the store, you have t o order from the menu, you pay at the window, you take it home and you shove it in your face. You are at fault, all they are doing is giving you what you asked for.

They buy more than they need. Needing and wanting something are to different things. Needs: house, money, food. Wants: a McDonald's Big Mac with a McD's Sweet Ice Tea and an order of Dollar Menu Fries, ice cream, to be a billionaire. We eat whenever we feel like it. We eat when we're stressed or when we're depressed, when we need to cry or when someone dies, when a boyfriend or girlfriends dumps you or when someone slumps you. Seriously, we all eat when we have different emotions. The chain restaurants, like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's or Sonic, ARE NOT TO BLAME for us being obese. We were born to love food. And it's never going to end. Okay? Thanks :)

I'm pretty sure it was Slashfood that informed me that Subway is actually #1. It is at least worth noting. I suppose considering people can get a quick meal for $2-3 at Wendy's or McDo's or BK, it takes more guests to generate equivalent revenue, as in 1 coffee at Starbucks = 2 or 3 meals at BK or Wendy's. I'd be interested in seeing the numbers for the average guest ticket amount for all chains.
