A Slider Made with Tastykakes: Would You Eat It?

When Adsum chef/owner and self-proclaimed "Philly fat kid" Matt Levin heard local Philadelphia baker Tasty Baking Company -- better known as Tastykake -- was facing bankruptcy, he immediately began "screwing around" with his longtime favorite treat, the Peanut Butter Kandy Kake.

Realizing that the chocolate-enrobed, peanut butter-layered treat closely resembled a burger bun, he decided to create a dish that would raise awareness of Tasty's dire situation. "The early versions were jacked up," Levin admits, "but they progressively got better. The sour component and the spice needed to balance the sweet."

Levin's sweet and savory invention is now being served at his restaurant Adsum: two house-ground brisket patties topped with sour cherry-sriracha jam and American cheese, each sandwiched between two of the Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes. Levin is even squirreling away a portion of the sliders' $11 price tag in a Tasty fund. "I'm a small Philadelphia business," he says, "and they were once a small Philadelphia business. This is our way of helping a brother out."

After moving to Indiana 2 years ago, I discovered Tastykakes are not available here!!! One day I decided to try and make them myself. Yellow cake mix, peanut butter, melted chocolate chips!! SUCCESS!! A taste of HOME!!!

I loved the creme filled Chocolate Cup Cakes.

Thank you for trying to help save the business.

I absolutely love and grew up on the jelly and butterscotch krimpets, coconut and chocolate juniors and their chocolate cupcakes. I pray they can pull themselves back up from this. Every time I go home to Baltimore/Virginia, I always come back home with at least four boxes of Tastykakes as well as bags of UTZ potato chips. They always take me back to my childhood! It's an east-coast thing!

The treat is worth every effort you put forward. I order them to be shipped here as often as I can. Maybe we can jointly keep them afloat cause ..."Nobody Makes a Cake as tasty as a tastykake."

All of you people lamenting Tastykakes, just leave the trailer and go to the corner gas station-gourmet food shop combo and eat a few Hostess or Mickey's cakes...no difference, actually. They all make you fat and clog your arteries.

Have you ever had one? I can tell your not from the Philadelphia area. And what is a Mickey's cake? Never heard of them. Googled it and not able to find anything. I don't eat Tastykake's every day but If I'm going to eat something unhealthy, it at least should be good. And by the way I don't live in a trailer and I buy Tastykake's in the supermarket.

Perhaps you were not spelling it correctly. I couldn't help but notice your misspelling of you're, in the sentence about me not being from Philly. Keep eatin' those Fakekakes! Peace.

2-17-2011 @11:55PM Delco Jim said... Pardon me for using the wrong form of you're. You were incorrect too. It was Mickey Snack Cakes not Mickey's. I used you're spelling of Mickey's in my search. Maybe that is why it did not come up. You said Dolly Madison bought Mickey. (Dolly Madison was later bought by Hostess.) But they don't make Mickey cakes anymore, do they?. Why would you say people go buy a product that is no longer made? I will keep eating those TASTYKAKES! They are far from fake, they are TASTY! Much better than Hostess cakes. Drakes cakes, ( which are also now owned by Hostess) are good too. They are better than the Hostess brand cakes. Little Debbie cakes are the worst.

Years later they turned up in Southern California, and I was in heaven. They only lasted for 1 or 2 years and then were gone. That's cool that we can order them on line, and I intend to do so.
