We've been taste-testing chocolates for quite some time (a tough job, but someone has to do it), and several years ago, we put Valentine's Day boxed chocolates to a test for the best. But since then, so much has changed -- there are new chocolatiers, and recent chocolate trends have led to new chocolate combinations. We knew it was time to update our gallery.
After tasting more than 45 different boxes, we've created six categories: Best box for kids, best drug-store box, best box for men, best box for caramel lovers, most beautiful creations and overall best box.
After the jump, click through our gallery of best boxed chocolates and see which chocolates won our hearts (and will win yours).
Best Valentines Day Chocolate
Chuao's Sweetheart Box
The moment we had our first bite, there was just no competition. Chuao chocolate is rich and creamy, without being too bittersweet. However, it was the unique combination of chocolate with savory and sweet fillings that had us at hello: strawberry caramel with balsamic vinegar, caramel fudge with popping candy and salt butter caramel infused with rosemary.
This is will the most unique, most delicious box of chocolate you're Valentine will ever receive.
Chuao Sweetheart Box; $49
Payard's Kentucky Bourbon Truffles
The men in the office quickly asked for seconds after tasting these bourbon infused truffles. Yes, the truffles are melt in your mouth, however, it's the bourbon that makes you go, "Wow."
Payard teamed up with Heaven Hill Distilleries and TCHO chocolate to create these hand-crafted truffles. Tell your guy that they're savoring chocolate with an 18 year old single barrel limited edition bourbon -- they'll appreciate that!
Payard Bourbon Truffles; $55
Woodhouse Chocolates Pink Heart Box
All 18 pieces in this box were eaten instantly. Don't be put off by the small, polka-dot design. Liquid caramels and chewy caramels topped with fleur de sel in both milk and dark chocolate pack a big punch.
Out of all the caramels we tried in every box and in every category, there was no competition. These caramels are buttery, smooth and just plain old irresistible.
Woodhouse Chocolates Pink Heart Box; $34
Mariebelle Ganache Boxed Chocolate
If anything, this box of chocolate will stop and make you go, "How did they do that?" The artistic designs that top each chocolate are whimsical and colorful ... you'll find yourself taking the time to examine each piece before devouring them.
Flavors inside each square vary: Champagne, whiskey, peanut butter, espresso, dulce de leche and even cilantro.
Mariebelle Ganache Chocolate Box (16 pc); $46
Reese's Mini Peanut Butter Cups and Lindt Lindor Truffles
It's important to get the little someone in your life a sweet for Valentine's Day. Since kids tend to be a little pickier than adults, we've come up with two solutions: the best peanut butter box (a classic) and the best milk chocolate box.
We're also in love with the individual packaging -- it controls the amount of chocolate your child intakes, as well as keep the chocolates fresh, longer.
Available at your local drugstores and supermarkets.
Hershey's Pot of Gold
Not only were we blown away by the quality of chocolate and filling combinations, it was one of the few boxes that included a map to each concoction. There's nothing worse than biting into a piece of chocolate with a cherry in the middle when you hate fruit filling.
Chocolate lovers can choose between a variety of milk and dark chocolate fillings like almond creme, chocolate truffle and caramel with almonds. Towards the bottom of the box we were surprised to find two larger pecan caramel clusters that just put a smile on our faces.
Available at your local drugstores and supermarkets.
Ferrero Rocher Variety Heart
OK, this certainly is the ugliest box we came across, however, it had some of the best drugstore chocolate inside. While we were familiar with the classic Rocher, we were introduced to two new flavors: Rondnoir (dark chocolate with chocolate cream in the classic crispy wafer) and Ferrero Garden (coconut cream surrounding an almond in a crispy wafer). We were hooked immediately, especially to the Garden variety, which resembled Grandma's coconut cream pie.
Editors note: the box it comes in is just terrible. We recommend you buy the chocolates, take them out of the box and wrap them in cellophane and tie it with a pretty bow.
Available at your local drugstores and supermarkets.

And sorry people, I'm an US expat living in Belgium-there is definitely nothing better than Belgian chocolates!
2-10-2011 @2:53PM cybele said... Zoe - Oh I agree! So many other better chocolates, even here in the US. (I was just in Amsterdam and they had stupendous candy and chocolate on ever street corner - though little of it made by the hyper-global companies they've listed here.)

It appears that they tested 45 different boxes, but only posted about the "best" in each of their strange categories. I wanted to see the list of all 45 with the pros & cons of each.

Truly the best boxed candies I've had the pleasure of tasting, made right here in the US since 1921.

If I order them online I have to pay so much money for postage it's hardly worth it. So...whenever I go back to California I pack some Sees.

If she likes dark chocolate, a box full of white chocolate truffles and milk chocolate nougats isn't the best gift, even if it's the most expensive. If your special someone hates peanut butter, a box of yummy Reese's PB Cup truffles is not going to sweep her off her feet. If my sweetie bought me a box of chocolates I loved, I would feel special, even if it was a gift bag full of Hershey's Chocolate Bars! Yum! If he brought me a huge, honkin' box of handmade peanut brittle from the Country Store gift shop and I'm allergic to peanuts, then....
