It's hard to beat the Windy City when it comes to hot dogs, and Chicago proved its sausage supremacy again yesterday when Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine and SeriousEats.com named local favorite Gene & Jude's "Depression-style" dog the best in America. After narrowing the search down to 64 finalists, judges from both publications used a "March Madness"-style bracket to determine that Gene & Jude's dog -- topped with mustard, onion, relish, sport peppers and (here's the kicker) french fries -- deserved the crown.

Might be that the meat itself is very good, but no mention of what brand it is. As for it being best due to it's toppings (french fries were the kicker? Really?), that's entirely a matter of taste. Me, I don't like hot peppers, so I wouldn't eat this nasty-looking thing if you paid me. I like mine best with cheese and onion, but that's just me.

Cock Robin Ice Cream used to share the parking lot & there was nothing like a dog and a "One in a Million" malt! I've taken a lot of people there over the years, not ONE didn't enjoy the experience once they ate there. It is a minor obsession, one we're lucky to be able to indulge in legally! I used to dream of these dogs when I was stationed out of the country, it is still the first stop when I pick my brother up at O'Hare airport. I'm glad we live in a place that encourages diversity in taste and availability so everyone can enjoy their favorites!
2-04-2011 @2:55PM Holly said... The french fries slobbered with mustard are so gross. There is nothing special about this hot dog and the last thing I want on my french fries is mustard. My favorite dog has mustard, chili and sweet creamy cole slaw on it.
2-09-2011 @9:17PM Joshua said... I live down the street from Gene & Jude's. I can understand where some of you are coming from based on appearance and whatnot. BUT... You have obviously never had one. These things are absolutely AMAZING!!!! And it's only 2 bucks for a dog 'n fries there... Still! They have been there much, much longer than 10 years too. They first started back in 1947. That's 64 YEARS!!!! And they do use Vienna Beef hot dogs. They are in the Vienna Beef Hall of Fame.

Now I live in Menifee, CA and I still can't find anything that compares, although they did put a Portillo's in Moreno Valley (guess I just have to settle).
2-04-2011 @6:52AM handsome said... Puh-leeeeze. Are they 10 years old. Fries on a hot dog? The concept's already been done at the Original in Pittsburgh, and it wasn't good then. Everybody is always trying to reinvent without food without succeeding. What an insult to the good dogs out there. I bet they rated Pinks in LA as good. I'll pass.

Got to agree that the fries on the dog aren't anything special, but again, Rachael Ray magazine was involved. There is a place called Pinks that sells dogs?...Never heard of it, doesn't sound promising but I guess whatever floats your boat.
2-04-2011 @11:48AM john w olds said... regardless of whether you consume said hotdog w/ the fries on top, packaging the wiener like that is by and far the best way to get it. the extra grease from the fries permeates into the bun and the whole dining experience can only be described as a "holistic" event.
booyah.

2-04-2011 @7:34AM Bob said... @Terry. Right On! Nathans and Hebrew National, blow away the competition. That is why they have been around so long with the same great quality. Chicago is, was, and will always be the Second City. In hot dogs too!!
2-04-2011 @7:42AM laura said... Any decent Chicago dog would be a Vienna Beef brand served on a poppy seed bun NO ketchup. Most places have the Vienna Beef sign up...I about gagged when we moved to Arkansas and went to get a "hot dog". It was a pale gross looking thing and the "kicker"? When the counter girl asked "Do you want mayo or mustard on that?"...I about gagged...MAYO? on a dog? ...disgusting
2-04-2011 @9:07AM Ron said... For me it's Boars Head. They cost more but are well worth it.
2-04-2011 @7:10PM Wayne said... Hot dogs are some of the best food around. Wife likes Hebrew National (I trend toward Ball Park all beef). Ron, tried some Boars Head hot dogs last week and they were like chewing rubber. Deli clerk said they put no fillers in them and that is what makes them tough to chew. Maybe a special way to cook them?
2-04-2011 @7:42AM Marlene said... Chicago hot dogs are the best. Tho they forgot the tomato & celery saly sprinkled on top! The hot dogs are vienna!

Anyhow, we used to go there 3-5 nights a week. AWESOME, never been duplicated, the dogs/buns/tomatoes/onions/etc...I'm droolin'.........
