Doughnut lovers, rejoice: Dunkin' Donuts is ringing in the month of love with three new chocolate doughnuts. Yes, you're thinking, "I've had chocolate doughnuts at Dunkin' before, what's the big deal?" Here's the twist -- these are chocolate yeast donuts. And that's a big deal in the doughnut world -- the chain is the first in the country to offer them.
Meet your new doughnuts, released today as part of the chain's "Chocolate Lovers Month":
- Cocoa Confetti: a chocolate yeast ring, topped with chocolate icing and rainbow sprinkles.
- Reverse Boston Kreme: a chocolate yeast shell filled with chocolate Bavarian Kreme and topped with vanilla icing.
- Cocoa Kreme Puff: a sugared chocolate yeast shell filled with vanilla butter cream.
We were lucky enough to get ahold of the new treats. After the jump, our review -- along with more photos.
According to Dunkin' Brands' Executive Chef Stan Frankenthaler, the new Cocoa Doughnuts represent one of the brand's greatest doughnut innovations. "After several years of developing and testing, we are delighted to have created a yeast version of our popular chocolate donuts," he says.
But do they taste good?
Cocoa Confetti: If you're a chocolate lover, it doesn't get better than this chocolate doughnut topped with their classic icing. Imagine their regular yeast doughnut topped with their chocolate glaze and topped with sprinkles -- now, double the chocolate. It's incredible how light these doughnuts are, which can be a bad thing, since we were more inclined to go back for seconds (and possibly thirds).
Cocoa Kreme Puff: There was just no competition -- this new doughnut is our favorite among all of the chain's offerings. The super-light chocolate puff is stuffed with a light vanilla buttercream that tastes more like whipped cream than butter cream. This doughnut is a definite winner, and we hope it stays on the shelves past February (when the "Chocolate Lovers" campaign ends).
Reverse Boston Kreme: Out of the three doughnuts, this was our least favorite, but that's not to say it wasn't good. To be fair, we matched up the classic version of a Boston creme doughnut to the new one. We were surprised to find that the center of the "reverse" doughnut was chocolate custard instead vanilla. We get the "reverse" concept, but we wanted a little more vanilla to balance out the chocolate.
At just 89 cents each, you can pick up all three and tell us what you think.
More new offerings at Dunkin' Donuts: In honor of "Chocolate Lovers Month," Dunkin' Donuts is also releasing the Chocolate Chip Bagel Twist, the Triple Chocolate Muffin, Mocha Coffee and Mocha Swirl Lattes and an adorable heart-shaped doughnut (available in vanilla and cocoa).

Dunkin' Doughnuts launches their new heart-shaped doughnuts for Valentine's Day. The vanilla heart is filled with a vanilla custard and the chocolate heart is filled with a strawberry jam filling (get it ... chocolate covered strawberry's).

I have always loved this type of donut, use to get something similar @ 'shipley's donuts..only difference was that they were glazed with the classic glaze on regular glazed donuts. umm, umm good!!!! my favorite of all time. I hope they keep. The cream in the center is the best. Don't change the cream!!

Yeast are the light and puffy kind, and lots of folks like how light and airy they are, but they're only available in one flavor. Now DD's has made chocolate flavored yeast donuts, which is a big deal to a lot of folks.

I would rather pay a little more and keep the quality, than to go to flavorless products like klondike bars, even Haagen Das has taken out some of the cream and flavorings and now lacks the magic it used to have. The Big Mac is smaller, so is the fish sandwich.
Once these companies get mega large, they can no longer afford to put out quality products. They have CEO's to pay, and the stock holders, too. So , who gets the 'el shaft-o' ? The consumer! We are all hooked on fast food, but one way I fight back is to make my homemade food so delicious , that I don't miss that fast food mess! I like to make my own crispy tacos ( I can enjoy tacos for 2 or 3 meals, when I make a batch). The secret is the sour cream! Last week I made my own egg rolls with well seasoned ground turkey, mushrooms, bean sprouts, cabbage, shredded carrots, water chestnuts, and thin rice noodles in them. You can't get that anywhere! Oh yes, and crab rangoons with dippin' sauce. I made 2 different meals with a total of 30 eggrolls and 30 crab rangoons for about 17 dollars. That's about .40 cents per egg roll and .17 cents per crab rangoon ! If you have a friend, or partner to help you make it, then it's easy. Home cooking is really a way to blow away your friends and family. Let's try to eat more home cookin' , and help lower the cost of fast food!

Chocolate raised donuts are not new for DD, they just haven't been made in over 40 years. They used to be glazed or choc. frosted with sprinkles and they even made them twisted. In '65 he opened his own Donut Shop in Leesburg Fl. and beat the socks of anything you ever tried at Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme couldn't hold a candle. In nearly 37 years, he always hand rolled and hand cut his dounuts--one at a time. He closed in late 2001 but if you ever had an Oscar's Donut, you really had something special.

I sure wish we had more of these incredible foods that were available when I was a kid! Krispy creme comes close, but the donut is too sweet, and it collapses when you bite into them, resembling a gooey blob. I sure wish your dad would sell his secrets to an aspiring donut maker, ( like me!)
2-01-2011 @8:09PM Danielle said... I just bought the Cocoa Kreme Puff, and man was I disappointed! Granted, I got it after work, so it was a bit dry, I'll forgive D&D for that. But I found the cream to have the mouth feel of really bad whipped topping, with that greasy feeling on your tongue, and a fake chemically vanilla taste. Not cool. And, I agree with Arthur, it was way smaller than I expected. An attempt at curtailing America's overeating and overblown portion control? If only.
