First it was the best Applebee's appetizers, now we head Down Under to the popular steak chain, Outback Steakhouse. With so many entrees on offer, we decided to start with the restaurant's tried-and-true classics: Outback Favorites.
Menu Overview: There are seven main courses in the "Favorites" section, including Baby Back Ribs, which had a great crust, but the meat was a little fatty. "Would have loved them with more sauce," one taster said. Next, we sampled the Grilled Chicken on the Barbie (the chicken was dry and lacked seasoning), the pleasantly spicy No Rules Parmesan Pasta (but where was the Parmesan?) and the Sweet Glazed Pork Tenderloin, a dish that prompted one taster to suggest it "could have been cardboard" underneath the heaping pile of overly-sweet sauce.

It was a tough choice deciding between our winner and runner-up. Depending on your mood - beef or poultry, either of the below dishes are a safe bet.

The Winner: Filet with Wild Mushroom Sauce
While we were a little scared at the sight of this dish (sloppy plating), our nerves were quickly put to rest with the first bite of the extremely tender filet. While we prefer our filets whole (this is sliced thinly), one tester said the beef "melted in my mouth." The mushroom sauce had us at hello, but this dish is definitely meant for a mushroom enthusiast, as there's no escaping the earthy flavor. The side of vegetables were cooked well, but lacked salt and pepper. This was an improvement over our soggy side of vegetables, which came with the Grilled Chicken on the Barbie. As for the mashed potatoes, may we have seconds?

The Runner-up: Alice Springs Chicken
Bacon, mushrooms, melted Monterery Jack and Cheddar cheeses top this chicken dish, and one tasted said it was "cooked to perfection: juicy and tender." Anything with melted cheese and served with a side of fries is hard to mess up. However, Outback has nailed the ratio of cheese to chicken so you can still taste all the components of the dish. We can't lie, the side of honey mustard intended for the chicken turned into our new favorite french-fry dip -- it was out of this world.

The Loser: New Zealand Rack of Lamb
We all looked at each other incredulously. Does Outback seriously consider this an "Outback Favorite?" The only thing that saved this dish were the "creamy mashed potatoes and crisp green beans" ... really, $20?

My favorite thing at Outback is the small lobster tails, an order of 2 with the sides and either the salad or a few bites of an appetizer, is a real full meal for me. I always order the baked sweet potato and usually end up taking that home for lunch the next day.
Then again, my family loves Outback. Among other things, it is because unless you want to pay $$$$ it's the only place in our city where one can find a really decent steak at a price that is affordable. Which is a pity. Because I live in Kansas City.

If people are really looking to save, there sure are better sites out there than scams like that. We like using Save Creatively ourselves, because unlike so many of the other scam sites that make you share email address and have a membership, etc, Save Creatively never asks for any personal info. They have everything from high-value coupons to daily free stuff!

You get a RACK not a few ribs.. and the Cabernet sauce is out of this world... Try buying a rack of lamb and cook it with the sides and the FAB. Cabernet sauce...it will cost you a lot more!!!

Everything I tried there left a lot to be desired.... and certainly was not worth any amount of money paid. If it's steak I'm after, I prefer Texas Roadhouse, and believe it or not, even Applebee's little 2 for $20 sirloin is excellent

1-31-2011 @8:46AM Arlene said... I must agree with you 100%. I have eaten at Outback several times and have yet to enjoy a single meal. Their Prime Rib was the worst I have ever had, I perfer Texas Roadhouse for Prime Rib...just wonderful. Only problem with Tx Roadhouse is it is tooooo noisey.
1-31-2011 @9:17AM John Howell said... I'm squarely on the other side on this one. Outback offers a consistently good product for a fair price. The Alice Springs Chicken really is outstanding, as is their sirloin. I'm also a fan of their dense, dark bread loaf.
1-31-2011 @9:26AM NotMe said... To be honest, I think it depends very much on the local manager of the Outback Steakhouse. When our local one first opened up, they had a bad habit of undercooking almost anything except for the Bloomin' Onion appitizer and a couple other appitizers. But as of a couple years ago, I heard that they had a new manager and I tried the local one and it was fine overall. Likewise there's one about 20 miles from me near a friend's house that has been consistantly awful, but another one on the other side of the town he's in is very good, better then my local one even under new management. So for being a chain restaurant they do seem more so then other casual family places to be based on whom is managing the staff and business.
1-31-2011 @11:28AM Mort said... I agree. I stopped going there 2 years ago, but recently I gave them another try. Ordered rib steak and what I got was a thin slice of prime rib. After I complained they insisted it was rib steak. Never again.
