6 Worst Coffee Drinks from 'Eat This, Not That'

Photo: Elizabeth Hait

Our new monthly installment features a portion of the popular guide, Eat This, Not That! in hopes that it will help you make better choices at casual and fast-food establishments.

I recently found myself in line at a local coffee shop behind a very nutrition-minded customer. She was asking the barista about the various food choices -- and she knew what she was talking about: Which fats were good or bad, how much sugar is reasonable, etc. That's why I couldn't believe her drink order: some kind of whipped mocha frappe concoction. All her caloric diligence went right out the window. I didn't want to be rude, so I held my tongue. But the woman made a classic mistake: She was watching what she ate, but not what she drank. The damage: more than 400 additional calories, guzzled from a plastic cup.

The fact is, a shocking number of the calories we consume at coffee joints doesn't come from the food. It comes from the coffee, and that's a shame. A cup of coffee in its raw, natural state contains only 5 calories, and coffee consumption has been linked to diminished risk of Alzheimer's [disease], better brain function, and even better memory. Coffee, in its purest, blackest form, is good for you. But too much of our coffee has been razzle-dazzled into sugary, fatty, pastrylike beverages: Instead of seizing the day with caffeinated focus, we're losing our grip on our diets.

That said, you can get your morning java boost without the accompanying belt expansion, if you know what to look for -- and what to avoid.

After the jump, an overview of the best -- and worst -- coffee drinks in America.

6 Worst Coffee Drinks

Cosi Double Oh! Arctic Mocha (12 oz)

434 calories
22 g fat (13 g saturated)
241 mg sodium
46 g sugars

This drink's deliciousness is no excuse for its queasy dietary overload: as many calories as you'll find in nine Chicken McNuggets, as much sugar as in three-and-a-half bowls of Froot Loops, and as much saturated fat as in 13 strips of bacon. Get the same great taste with a quarter of the fat and 245 fewer calories by opting for an arctic latte instead. No need for all that superfluous chocolate -- the latte is just as delicious without the extra baggage.

Drink This Instead: Arctic Latte (12 oz)

6 Worst Coffee Drinks

Dunkin' Donuts Mocha Spice Latte (large)

450 calories
12g fat (8g saturated)
64g sugars

Lattes are made with espresso and steamed milk and, in the case of the flavored latte, a lot of sugar. Just one of the saccharine drinks contains the caloric equivalent of six glazed chocolate-cake Munchkins. You can get the same great taste for less than half the calories by choosing Dunkin' Donuts' medium gingerbread coffee, which bypasses the milk and much of the sweet stuff.

Drink This Instead: Mocha Coffee (medium)

6 Worst Coffee Drinks

Starbucks Double Chocolaty Chip Frappuccino with Whole Milk and Whipped Cream (venti)

520 calories
23 g fat (14 g saturated, 0.5 g trans)
350 mg sodium
68 g sugars

Within this chocolate calamity lurks three-quarters of your recommended daily intake of saturated fat, and as much sugar as you'll find in 10 Rainbow Popsicles! Slash your calorie intake by switching to skim milk and cutting out the whipped cream. Knock the size down to a grande, and switch from the frappe to an iced mocha, and you're looking at a drink with 350 fewer calories than when you started.

Drink This Instead: Grande Iced Caffe Mocha with Skim Milk (No Whipped Cream)

6 Worst Coffee Drinks

Starbucks White Hot Chocolate with Whole Milk and Whipped Cream (venti)

640 calories
28 g fat (18 g saturated, 0.5 g trans)
330 mg sodium
76 g sugars

No one orders a hot chocolate and expects it to be anything but a dessert-like beverage. And certainly you should enjoy the occasional indulgence. But other times try this: Go with 2% milk and shave 50 calories. Cut the whipped topping and trim another 70. Downsize to a grande and shed 120 more. Or swap to a cinnamon dulce latte, and cut out hundreds of calories while still indulging in a deliciously sweet treat!

Drink This Instead: Cinnamon Dolce Latte with Nonfat Milk (grande)

6 Worst Coffee Drinks

McDonald's Frappe Caramel (large)

680 calories
29 g fat (18 g saturated, 1.5 g trans)
88 g sugars

A caramel coffee frappe should be considered actual coffee -- the first five ingredients are water, cream, sugar, milk and high fructose corn syrup. Only after getting the two milks and two sugars out of the way do you get to coffee extract -- and that sugar is the equivalent of 31 Werther's Original caramel candies. You can get the same great caramel taste for almost 500 fewer calories by opting for a medium nonfat caramel cappuccino.

Drink This Instead : Nonfat Caramel Cappuccino (medium)

6 Worst Coffee Drinks

Cold Stone Creamery Lotta Caramel Latte (Gotta Have It Size)

1,790 calories
90 g fat (57 g saturated, 2.5 g trans)
175 g sugars

It may be coffee-flavored, but this latte shake is virtually unrecognizable next to your typical morning cup of Joe. It's simply a giant dessert drink disaster. This large shake has nearly a full day's worth of calories, as much saturated fat as you'll find in 57 strips of bacon, and you'll exceed your daily limit of trans fats in the few minutes it takes you to drink it. Oh, did I mention the ridiculous sugar load? (44 spoonfuls!)

Drink This Instead: Lite Milk Caramel Latte, Love it Size

That's what's wrong with this world, everyone telling everyone else what to do, eat, drink, etc. It's a free country, so shut up about other people's business, especially mine!!!

The author is not telling you you have to drink this or not drink that. The article reports to you the content of certain drinks. Some readers might not realize the calorie and fat content of some of these drinks. Some just might decide they should reconsider what they put in their body especially if they are trying to be healthy. So, take it easy folks, no one is attacking your right to pollute your carcass, it IS a free country and that goes for informing the readers of the facts.

Or if its chemically processed making it completely undrinkable? You're an idiot, try to not be one maybe.

I do like the sweeter flavored coffee so what I do is buy the powder form like international coffees and mix that in with my coffee. Walmart sells Nestle flavored coffees like vanilla and mocha for under $4 and I always add a tablespoon in to give a nice flavored coffee for a fraction of the cost. For a true caffeine rush I like Vietnamese coffee. Lucky that wasn't listed or another fave is out the window.

I am really sick of hearing how almost EVERYTHING nowadays is "bad" for you. Once in a while, something you really enjoy is OK. Eat "healthy" most of the time, but treat yourself occasionally.

No one's sayng not to treat yourself once in a while, but if you're diabetic (as I am) or have certain other health conditions, you need to be as aware of what's in what you drink as in what you eat. Personally, I go for a sugar-free Cinnamon Dolce Latte with soy milk, foam, and no whip. I have tried the McDonald's drinks, but their coffee always tastes burnt.

old enough to remember

1-25-2011 @10:53PM old enough to remember said... Actually Tistyen, the author of Eat This, Not That (and that Center for something or other) are telling people what they should and should not eat. That said, I agree with you about treating yourself once in a while. I am also diabetic and try to watch what I eat and drink. My doctor said I could, on rare occasion, "splurge". By the way, not related to what either you or Cissy said, I thought that Starbucks only makes their beverages with 2% milk, not whole. I don't care for their coffee or coffee drinks, so I am not 100% positive.

Erin

1-25-2011 @10:31AM Erin said... This is why my latte IS my breakfast, unless I add a piece of fruit. That's also why you don't get the large, you don't get the one with whole milk, and you skip the whip cream. I may get flavored lattes, but getting soy or skim milk and no whip keeps it from being too bad. If you really love your morning latte, you just cut the calories out of your diet elsewhere.

1-25-2011 @10:48PM Hope said... My parents, born in 1918 and 1923, drank coffee all day, everyday, as grownups. I know that neither of them ever set foot in a "coffee house". Watch a western from back in the day...the coffee, perking over the fire, was a mainstay of life. Coffee is NOT a new thing.
