In the end, we chose an overall winner for each category and one loser (which was clearly the worst chip of the bunch). After the jump, find out which big supermarket brand flunked our taste test.
Sour Cream and Onion Taste Test
Category: Plain
Winner: Ruffles Sour Cream & Onion
Our panel says: "Best combination of salty, creamy, onion and sour cream flavors with a crunchy texture." "Had just the right amount of powdered coating -- I want the flavor to explode and these certainly did the trick." "On top of the perfect combination of flavors, the thickness of the chip will come in handy for dips, etcetera., not that this chip needs anything else."
Sour Cream and Onion Taste Test
Category: Kettle
Winner: Dirty Sour Cream & Onion
Our panel says: "A good sturdy chip with great flavor." "I can't actually taste the onion. Usually the flavor is mostly sour cream, but this had both." "While a kettle chip is supposed to be crunchier, some of the competing brands were too hard, this one was just right."
Sour Cream and Onion Taste Test
Category: Alternative
Winner: Popchips Sour Cream & Onion
Our panel says: "Could tell off the bat that this wasn't a regular chip, but somehow they still managed to pack a lot of flavor and crunch into it." "Compared with the others, this chip is golden -- better for you and still satisfies the sour cream craving." "Chips that are baked not fried tend to have less sour cream and onion coating -- not these chips!"
Sour Cream and Onion Taste Test
Overall Loser: 365 Sour Cream and Onion
Our panel says: "Weird texture and a terrible, artificial flavor." "This chip has no crunch to it, too thin." "These chips had an odd, meaty-bouillon flavor to them."

If you ever get to Pennsylvania, try Troyer Farms chips.
You'll start buying them mail order, they're so good.

Also, UTZ exports its trail mix and cheese puffs overseas to COSTCOs, they should start including their chips in that deal.

Don't get me wrong, I love the chips from the bag. However, there's more air & less chips (big pieces or a lot of broken pieces). I don't see the can in the pictures. Even if they say crisps on the can, I would still love them as potato chips.

The closest to it is Lays sour cream and onion, the regular chips not the ruffles kind. When it comes to BBQ ones you are on your own, some are so bad they are inedible even among the top name brands. So far Sneiders of Hanover makes the best BBQ. Though some lay brands and others have a few good ones like sweet and sassy or honey BBQ. But I have yet to find them in big bags only 99 cent bags which gets expensive.

This salt free - fat free stuff is bland compared to what they used to be. Only way to counter this blandness is to create a dip for them.

For me, UTZ wins the sour cream and onion battle, and not just because my grandfather used to supply them with potatoes a long, long time ago. I do have to admit that Ruffles are very good, and I like all flavors of Dirty chips.

Everytime I see a new brand, I try it. In my opinion, the best regular type is Herr's. However, the best-best (?!) is Tom's Vinegar & Salt!!! Yes, Vinegar & Salt...not Salt & Vinegar!! Haven't found them here is the NY area, but, luckily, I travel south quite often!!
