Dunkin' Donuts Sausage Pancake Bites Reviewed

Sarah De Heer, AOL

Last week we announced that Dunkin' Donuts would be expanding its breakfast menu with Sausage Pancake Bites. First, the Double Down made the bun obsolete by using meat instead of bread, and now Dunkin' has taken pancakes and sausage to the next level by eliminating utensils. Each serving consists of just three "bites," and we were still hungry after this meal -- however, since one serving comes in at 300 calories, we understand why they limit us. The pancake portion of the "bite" was pleasant -- it resembles sweet cornbread more than a traditional pancake. The sausage was our favorite part -- unlike the usual breakfast sausage found at fast food establishments, this sausage has herbs and spices you can actually taste; and the sausage doesn't overwhelm the pancake with grease.

All in all, we've had much worse fast-food breakfasts. If Dunkin' Donuts brings these back for a second run, we'd suggest ditching the maple-flavored pancake and offering maple syrup to dunk in instead. Yes, that takes the "grab-and-go" theme away, but we'd much rather eat a better product than have both hands free.

The only thing scary about these small nibbles: the lengthy ingredients list. Read the rest of our review after the jump.

Our testers said: "Still has that fake maple flavor, but I can deal with it." "They're not too greasy and I even enjoyed them cold." "If I had to choose between other fast-food breakfast sandwiches and these bites, I would chose these."

If you look at the list, just about everything in that list is something you can buy in the grocery store or specialty store, even those "chemical" names are just the chemical names for things like baking powder or baking soda or other common natural ingredients. Next time do some research and make an informed statement that is scientifically sound.

These little nuggets aren't the healthiest thing out there, but if you're scared of stuff in the ingredients list, you need to do a bit of research.

Indeed; most of the ingredients come from the fact that they use several complex ingredients like the batter (!), which also contains complex ingredients like flour (!!). Once everything in brackets is removed, it comes down to this: Sausage, Water, Batter Mix, Corn Batter Mix, Maple Flavored Bits, Maple Flavoring. Fried in Vegetable Oil.

Absolutely! :-)

That picture of them looks disusting, whoever made that order of bites..should be fired. lol and as for maple syrup on the side..my particular job carries them just ask. =) that's all.

Anyways, I just tried the bites, they weren't bad, but not great either. I liked the sausage, but not the pancake portion.
