The Cake to End All Cakes: The Pumpple

Photo: Elizabeth Hait, AOL

Last week, our sister site Lemondrop.com wrote about the Pumpple Cake: half cake, half pie and all calories. The Pumpple, created by the Flying Monkey Patisserie, in Philadelphia, consists of apple and pumpkin pies baked inside vanilla and chocolate cakes covered, no, obliterated, with vanilla buttercream. It just so happens I was in the area this weekend, and picked up a Pumpple to bring back to AOL Headquarters.

Having made the trip back to New York in one piece, the cake was ready for the food team to dig in. By 10:00 a.m. we were slicing into this masterpiece. For a moment we all just stood there in awe, thinking, How did anyone even come up with this idea?

Eating a cake this large and indulgent doesn't come without repercussions. Here come the heartbreaking numbers: The Pumpple weighs 15 pounds and measures more than a foot tall. And make sure you have a crowd to share this cake with, because each slice packs 1,800 calories. No, that is not a typo.

Here's what we enjoyed about the cake:
1. Its utter beauty and creativity.
2. The chocolate cake was moist and had a rich chocolate flavor.
3. The pumpkin pie's spices were out-of-this-world.
4. The experience, and everyone's eyes as we cut the first slice.
5. The name.

Here are our qualms about the cake:
1. Way too much frosting. I understand that there needs to be some sort of stabilizing agent between the two cakes, but there's no need for that much (see photo gallery below).
2. The vanilla cake was dry and crumbly.
3. More apple pie, please.
4. Start offering the chocolate-and-pumpkin section by itself.
5. Please start delivering!

If you're not a fan of these holiday pies, don't fret. As I stood in line waiting for my Pumpple, I asked the young woman behind-the-counter, "Do you plan on selling these throughout the year?" She responded, "Yes, we're even going to change it up through the seasons, peach pie for the summer, etcetera." So there's still a chance for you pumpkin-pie haters to dig into a foot-long cake sometime down the line.

With the extreme fast-food movement in full swing, I'm concerned that bakeries and other food establishments are going to join the insanity. However, if nothing else, this cake is a beauty and it's certain to be a conversation piece at your next holiday event.

Hey Folks..........For all of you naysayers.........please keep in mind that this is nothing more than a gimmick and ruse engineered to get those of you with very negative attitudes to spout off about how reprehensible, disgusting and down right ridiculous such a creation is! And.......from what I can see.......it's actually worked nicely.....lol.
It's only a joke, albeit one that some people actually take the time and effort to complete, but nonetheless, something any serious cook or baker would never waste their time, energy and resources completing.
